Large earthquakes with (MW > ~ 6) result in ground shaking, surface ruptures, and permanent deformation with displacement. The earthquakes would damage important facilities and infrastructure such as large industrial establishments, nuclear power plants, and waste disposal sites. In particular, earthquake ruptures associated with large earthquakes can affect geological and engineered barriers such as deep geological repositories that are used for storing hazardous radioactive wastes. Earthquake-driven faults and surface ruptures exhibit various fault zone structural characteristics such as direction of earthquake propagation and rupture and asymmetric displacement patterns. Therefore, estimating the respect distances and hazardous areas has been challenging. We propose that considering multiple parameters, such as fault types, distribution, scale, activity, linkage patterns, damage zones, and respect distances, enable accurate identification of the sites for deep geological repositories and important facilities. This information would enable earthquake hazard assessment and lower earthquake-resulted hazards in potential earthquake-prone areas.
To stabilize the excavations in urban area, soil anchorage is among the very common methods in geotechnical engineering. A more efficient deformation analysis can potentially lead to cost-effective and safer designs. To this end, a total of 116 three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) models of a deep excavation supported by tie-back wall system were analyzed in this study. An initial validation was conducted through examination of the results against the Texas A&M excavation cases. After the validation step, an extensive parametric study was carried out to cover significant design parameters of tie-back wall system in deep excavations. The numerical results indicated that the maximum horizontal displacement values of the wall (δhm) and maximum surface settlement (δvm) increase by an increase in the value of ground anchors inclination relative to the horizon. Additionally, a change in the wall embedment depth was found to be contributing more to δvm than to δhm. Based on the 3D FE analysis results, two simple equations are proposed to estimate excavation deformations for different scenarios in which the geometric configuration parameters are taken into account. The model proposed in this study can help the engineers to have a better understanding of the behavior of such systems.

Rapid industrialization and urbanization caused by the high economic growth of the country requires optimization of land usage as well as the expansion of underground space. Therefore the construction of large and deep basements is inevitable in built up areas where the braced excavation for earth retaining structures may create many problems such as settlement and damages of nearby buildings and underground utilities. In this work, some of major influential factors concerning the stability of braced excavation are investigated and the results are compared with the field observation results. The ground water table, applied strut forces, horezontal wall displacement, infilling materials in the rock joints were found to be the most critical factors influencing the stability of braced walls constructed in the layered ground. Magnituide and type of the wall deformation was closely related to the pattern of the surface settlement. The stability of braced walls are described in terms of strut forces.
In order to analyze the effect of burial depth on the generation of ground cavities and cave-ins, a series of model experiments with different height of model ground were performed. Digital images of the model ground were captured to evaluate the internal deformation of the model grounds by adopting the PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. Additionally, the vertical displacement at the surface, the size of the cavity, and the weight of the discharged soil were measured in each test. The results indicate that the model ground with low burial depth, which does not satisfy the criterion, was more vulnerable to ground cavities and cave-ins than the model ground with high burial depth.
The soil-structure relative stiffness is a key factor affecting the seismic response of underground structures. It is of great significance to study the soil-structure relative stiffness for the soil-structure interaction and the seismic disaster reduction of subway stations. In this paper, the dynamic shear modulus ratio and damping ratio of an inhomogeneous soft soil site under different buried depths which were obtained by a one-dimensional equivalent linearization site response analysis were used as the input parameters in a 2D finite element model. A visco-elasto-plastic constitutive model based on the Mohr-Coulomb shear failure criterion combined with stiffness degradation was used to describe the plastic behavior of soil. The damage plasticity model was used to simulate the plastic behavior of concrete. The horizontal and vertical relative stiffness ratios of soil and structure were defined to study the influence of relative stiffness on the seismic response of subway stations in inhomogeneous soft soil. It is found that the compression damage to the middle columns of a subway station with a higher relative stiffness ratio is more serious while the tensile damage is slighter under the same earthquake motion. The relative stiffness has a significant influence on ground surface deformation, ground acceleration, and station structure deformation. However, the effect of the relative stiffness on the deformation of the bottom slab of the subway station is small. The research results can provide a reference for seismic fortification of subway stations in the soft soil area.
The bored tunneling method is generally preferred for urban tunnel construction, However the cut & cover tunnel is still necessary for special conditions, such as metro station and access structures. In some case, deep excavation for cut & cover construction is planed of irregular and unusual shape, as a consequence, the convex and concave corner is often encountered during that excavation. In particular, discontinuity or imbalance of the support structure in the convex corner can lead to collapse, which may result in damages and casualties. In this study, the behavior of the convex corner of retaining structure were investigated using 3-dimensional numerical models established to be able to simulate the split-shaped behavior of convex corners. To improve the stability in the vicinity of the convex corner, several stabilizing measures were proposed and estimated numerically. It is found that linking two discretized wales at the convex corner can effectively perform the control of deformation. Furthermore, it was also confirmed that the stabilizing measures can be enhanced when the tie-material linking two discretized wales is installed at the depth of the maximum wall deflection.

This paper presents the results of laboratory investigation on the deformation behavior of tunnel face reinforced with longitudinal pipes. A series of reduced-scale model tests was carried out to investigate the effect of reinforcement layout on the tunnel face axial displacement as well as the surface settlement. Among other things, the results of the model tests indicate that the axial displacement of tunnel face as well as the ground surface settlement can significantly be reduced by pre-reinforcing the tunnel face with longitudinal pipes, suggesting that the pre-reinforcing technique may effectively be used as a positive ground control method in the urban environments. Also illustrated is that the reinforcing effect is significantly influenced by the reinforcement layout. The implications of the findings from this study are discussed in a great detail.
In this study, laboratory model test was performed to estimate pullout behavior of pipe type anchor with surface roughness, embedment and diameter. The design of buried pipe anchors in areas of vertical ground movement is governed, in part, by magnitude of the forces imposed on the pipe and displacements at which they are developed. In this paper, uplift resistance and displacement characteristics of pipe anchors caused by ground condition and embedment ratio, surface roughness, pipe diameter through the analysis of pipe anchor model test were compared and analyzed. The test results of the buried pipe showed that as the relative density increases, ultimate uplift resistance increase in 20%. When pipe anchor is failed with the relative density of the ground, the change of surface roughness, it was shown that the deformation increases as the ratio of penetration increases from 2 to 8 in five times approximately. And most anchor-based theories overestimate the breakout factor.
Rammed Aggregate Pier (RAP) has extensive applicability as for a foundation of structures. In this study, bearing capacity of the reinforced ground by RAP and the failure behavior of RAP are investigated through experiments. RAPs with diameters of 45, 60, 70 mm were installed in sand, of which relative densities are 60, 70, 90%. Then, two columns of pressure gauges, near the RAPs and one diameter off from the center of piers, are installed 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 cm from the surface of the ground. The test results show that maximum lateral earth pressure is observed near 5∼10 cm (1.0∼2.0D) from the surface, which indicates the occurrence of bulging failure type. In addition, deformation of RAP in radial direction increases with lower relative density of the ground. Furthermore, lateral stress distribution decreases with depth.

The shield TBM method is widely adopted for tunneling works in urban area because it has more beneficial ways to control settlement at ground surface than conventional mined tunneling. In the shield tunneling, backfill grouting at tail void is crucial because it is supposed not only to restraint ground deformation around tail void during excavation but also to compensate precedent ground settlement by pushing up the ground with highly pressurized grout. However, the tail void grouting has been found to be ineffective for settlement compensation particularly in sandy ground, which might be caused by complicate interaction between ground and tail void grouting. In this paper, the effects of tail void grouting on behavior of ground in shield TBM tunneling were investigated based on 3-dimensional finite element analyses. The results of numerical analyses indicated that backfill grouting actually reduces settlement by degrading settlement increasing rate in excavation, which means decrease of volume loss. Meanwhile, the grouting could not contribute to compensate the precedent settlement, because reduction of volume loss by grouting was found to be counterbalanced by volume change of ground.
