During tunnel excavation in urban area a systematic monitoring is important for the purpose of determination of support type and quantity, as well as for the control of stability of both surface structures and the tunnel itself due to the frequently, and in many cases, abruptly changing ground condition. In Austria absolute displacement monitoring methods have replaced relative displacement measurements by geodetic methods to a large extent. Prompt detection of weak ground ahead of the tunnel face as well as better adjustment of excavation and support to the geotechnical conditions is possible with the help of the improved methods of data evaluation on sites. Deformation response of the ground to excavation starts ahead of the tunnel face, therefore, the deformation and state of the tunnel advance core is the key factor of the whole deformation process after excavation. In other words, the rigidity and state of the advance core play a determining role in the stability of both surface structures and the tunnel itself. This paper presents the results from detailed three-dimensional numerical studies, exploring vertical displacements, vector orientations and extrusions on tunnel face during the progressive advancement for the shallow tunnel in various geotechnical conditions.
Augustine volcano is an active stratovolcano located southwest of Anchorage, Alaska. Augustine volcano experienced seven significantly explosive eruptions in 1812, 1883, 1908, 1935, 1963, 1976, and 1986, and a minor eruption in January 2006. To measure ground surface deformation of Augustine volcano, we applied satellite radar interferometry with ERS-1/2 and ENVISAT SAR images acquired from three descending and three ascending satellite tracks. Multiple interferograms are stacked to reduce artifacts due to changes in atmospheric condition and retrieve temporal deformation sequence. For this, we used Least Square (LS) method for reducing atmospheric effects and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method for the retrieval of a temporal deformation sequence. Interferograms before 2006 eruption show about 3 cm/year subsidence by contraction of pyroclastic flow deposits from the 1986 eruption. Interferograms during 2006 eruption do not show significant deformation around volcano crater. Interferograms after 2006 eruption show again a several cm subsidence by compaction and contraction of pyroclastic flow deposits for a few months. This study demonstrates that satellite radar interferometry can monitor deformation of Augustine volcano to help understand the magma plumbing system driving surface deformation.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on the behavior of earth retaining wall system with emphasis on the groundwater lowering. Using the 2D stress-pore pressure coupled analysis, the effects of ground excavation and groundwater interaction were examined using wall horizontal deformation, ground surface movement, plastic strain pattern, effective stress distribution and axial stress of strut. In addition, based on the results from a parametric study on a wide range of soil profile and initial ground water table level, the ranges of wall displacement and ground deformation were suggested quantitatively.
When the shear deformation occurs on the slope reinforced with soil nail, a passive earth pressure is induced on the ground around the soil nail and the increase of shear deformation causes the earth pressure variation of the ground and the deformation and member force change of the soil nail. In this study, the shear behavior of the soil nail was analyzed experimentally by inducing the shear deformation in the vertical direction of the soil nail using a large-scale direct shear test equipment and it was verified through numerical analysis. The shear test was performed on the bonded length (6D, 8D, 10D and 12D) of the soil nail separated from the shear surface. As a result, it was observed that the continuous increase of the shear deformation caused the damage of the grout and the effect according to the bonded length was analyzed. Through the model test and the numerical analysis, it was confirmed that the transfer length of the soil nail was 0.2~0.22m, which is larger than 0.1m suggested in the previous study, and the shear zone was in the range of 0.6m from the shear surface.
The control and prediction of surface settlement, gradient and ground displacement are the main factors in shallow tunnel design and construction in urban area. For deformation analysis of shallow tunnel due to excavation it is important to identify possible deformation mechanism of shear bands developing from tunnel shoulder to the ground surface. This paper investigaties quantitatively the deformation behavior of shallow tunneling by model tunnel test and strain softening analysis Incorporating the reduction of shear stiffness and strength parameters. The comparison of model tunnel test result and numerical simulation using strain softening analysis showed good agreement in crown settlement, normalized subsidence settlement and developing shear bands above tunnel shoulder. In this study, it is blown that the strain softening modeling is applicable to the nonlinear deformation analysis of shallow tunnel.

The shield tunneling method can minimize surface settlements by preventing the deformation of tunnel face and tunnel intrados due to tunnel excavation. For this purpose, it is very important to control the operating conditions of shield TBM. The face pressure and backfill pressure for tail void grouting should be the most important and immediate measure not only to restrain surface settlement, but also to influence the effective stress and pore water pressure around the circumstance of tunnel during excavation. The reaction of the ground to the application of face pressure and backfill pressure relies on the stiffness and permeability of ground. Especially, the reaction of saturated clayey ground formations, which shows the time-dependent deformation, is different from the permeable ground. Hence, in this paper it was investigated how the TBM operating conditions, ground stiffness, and permeability impact on the surface settlement of saturated clayey ground. For this purpose, a series of parametric studies were carried out by means of the stress-pore water pressure coupled FE analysis. The results show that the settlement of soft clayey ground is divided into the immediate settlement and consolidation settlement. Especially, the consolidation settlement depends on the ground stiffness and permeability. In addition, the existence of critical face pressure and backfill pressure was identified. The face pressure and backfill pressure above the critical value may cause an unexpected increase in the ground settlement.

Analyzing the tunnel excavation behavior and its effect on the surrounding ground involves large deformation behavior. Therefore, in order to properly simulate the tunnel excavation process and rigorously investigate the actual effect of excavation on surrounding ground and tunnel structure large deformation analysis method is required. In this study, two major numerical approaches capable of considering large deformations behavior were applied to investigate the effect of tunnel boring machine excavation on the surrounding ground: coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) and the automatic remeshing (AR) method. Relative performance of both approaches was evaluated through the ground response due to TBM excavation. The ground response will be quantified by estimating the range of the excavation damaged zone (EDZ). By comparing the results, the range of the EDZ will be suggested on the vertical and horizontal direction along the TBM excavation surface. Based on the computed results, it was found that the size of EDZ around the excavation surface and the tendencies was in good agreement among the two approaches. Numerical results clearly show that the size of the EDZ around the tunnel tends to be larger for rock with higher RMR rating. The size of the EDZ is found to be direct proportional to the tunnel diameter, whereas the depth of the tunnel is inversely proportional due to higher confinement stress around the excavation surface.
Immersion tests of Alloy 600 were conducted in simulated primary water environments of a pressurized water reactor at 325 ℃ for 10, 100, and 1000 h to obtain insight into effects of surface deformation on internal and intergranular (IG) oxidation behavior through precise characterization using various microscopic equipment. Oxidized samples after immersion tests were covered with polyhedral and filamentous oxides. It was found that oxides were abundant in mechanically ground (MG) samples the most. The number density of surface oxides increased with time irrespective of the method of surface finish. IG oxidation occurred in mechanically polished (MP) and chemically polished (CP) samples with thin internal oxidation layers. However, IG oxidation was suppressed with relatively thick internal oxidation layers in MG samples compared to MP and CP samples, suggesting that MG treatment could increase resistance to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) from the standpoint of IG oxidation. As a result, appropriate surface treatment for Alloy 600 could prevent oxygen diffusion into grain boundaries, inhibit IG oxidation, and finally induce its high PWSCC resistance.

In soft ground tunneling, shield method is very good for safety of neighboring structures. Although shield tunnel method has the merits to minimize the deformation of ground around tunnel, ground deformations occurred until the material grouted in tail void hardens are inevitable. In this study, the effects of micropile used as one method to restrain the settlement of neighboring structures by the tail void are studied by laboratory model tests. As a basic test result, the effective direction of micropile and the restraint rate of settlement by micropile reinforcement are known.
In most cases in urban areas, construction of divergence tunnel should take into account proximity to existing tunnel in operation. This inevitably leads to deformation of adjacent structures and surrounding ground. Preceding researches mainly dealt with reinforcing of the diverging section for the stability including the pillar. This has limitations in investigating the interactive effects between existing structures and surrounding ground due to the excavation of the divergence tunnel. In this study, the complex interactive behavior of pile, the operating tunnel, and the surrounding ground according to horizontal offsets between the two adjacent tunnels was quantitatively analyzed based on conditions diverged from operating tunnel in urban areas. The effects on ground structures confirmed by analyzing the ground surface settlements, pile settlements, and the axial forces of the pile. The axial forces of lining in operating tunnel investigated to estimate their impact on existing tunnel. In addition, in order to identify the deformation of the surrounding ground, the close range photogrammetry applied to the laboratory model test for confirming the underground displacements. Two-dimensional finite element numerical analysis was also performed and compared with the results. It identified that the impact of excavating a divergence tunnel decreased as the horizontal offset increased. In particular, when the horizontal offset was larger than 1.0D (D is the diameter of operating tunnel), the impact on existing structures further reduced and the deformation of surrounding ground was concentrated at the top of the divergence tunnel.
