The effect of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) treatment with O2 gas on the surface properties of poly(ether sulfone) (PES) was investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to analyze the chemical characteristics of the O2 plasma-treated PES films. The surface roughness of the pristine and O2 plasma-treated PES films for different RF powers of the ICP was determined using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The contact angles of the PES films were also measured, using which the surface free energies were calculated. The O1s XPS spectra of the PES films revealed that the number of polar functional groups increased following the O2 plasma treatment. The AFM analysis showed the average surface roughness increased from 1.01 to 4.48 nm as the RF power of the ICP was increased. The contact angle measurements revealed that the PES films became more hydrophilic as the RF power of the ICP was increased. The total surface energy increased with the RF power of the ICP, resulting from the increased polar energy component.
Formation behavior of aluminum anodic oxide (AAO) films on Al6061 alloy was studied in view of thickness, morphology and defects in the anodic films in 20 vol.% sulfuric acid solution at a constant current density of $40mA/cm^2$, using voltage-time curve, observation of anodized specimen colors and surface and cross-sectional morphologies of anodic films with anodization time. With increasing anodizing time, voltage for film formation increased exponentially after about 12 min and its increasing rate decreased after 25 min, followed by a rapid decrease of the voltage after about 28 min. Surface color of anodized specimen became darker with increasing anodizing time up to about 20 min, while it appeared to be brighter with increasing anodizing time after 20 min. The darkened and brightened surfaces with anodizing time are attributed to an increase in thickness of porous anodic oxide film and a chemical damage of the films due to heat generated by increased resistance of the film, respectively. Cross-sectional observation of AAO films revealed the formation of defects of crack shape at the metal/oxide interface after 15 min which prevents the growth of AAO films. Width and length of the crack-like defect increased with anodizing time up to 25 min of anodizing, and finally the outer part of AAO films was partly dissolved or detached after 30 min of anodizing, resulting in non-uniform surface structures of the AAO films.
In this study, 2 wt% Cr-doped Ni thin films were deposited using DC sputtering on a bare Si substrate using a 4 inch target at room temperature. In order to obtain ultrathin films from Cr-doped Ni thin films with high electrical properties and uniform surface, the micro-structure and electrical properties were investigated as a function of deposition time. For all deposition times, the Cr-doped Ni thin films had low average resistivity and small surface roughness. However, the resistivity of the Cr-doped Ni thin films at various ranges showed large differences for deposition times below 90 s. From the results, 120 s is considered as the appropriate deposition time for Cr-doped Ni thin films to obtain the lowest resistivity, a low surface roughness, and a small difference of resistivity. The Cr-doped Ni thin films are prospective materials for microdevices as ultrathin film electrodes.
Teflon-like fluorocarbon thin film was deposited on various substrates by vapor deposition using PFDA (perfluorodecanoic acid). The fluorocarbon films were characterized by static/dynamic contact angle analysis, VASE (Variable-angle Spectroscopic Ellipsometry) and AFM/LFM (Atomic/Lateral Force Microscopy). Based on Lewis Acid/Base theory, the surface energy ($S_{E}$) of the films was calculated by the static contact angle measurement. The work of adhesion (WA) between de-ionized water and substrates was calculated by using the static contact data. The fluorocarbon films showed very similar values of the surface energy and work of adhesion to Teflon. All films showed larger hysteresis than that of Teflon. The roughness and relative friction force of films were measured by AFM and LFM. Even though the small reduction of surface roughness was found on film on $SiO_2$surface, the large reduction of relative friction farce was observed on all films. Especially the relative friction force on TEOS was decreased a quarter after film deposition. LFM images showed the formation of "strand-like"spheres on films that might be the reason far the large contact angle hysteresis.

Films of CrAlN and CrZrN were deposited on a steel substrate by closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering, and their oxidation behaviors were investigated. CrAlN films consisted of dense, polycrystalline CrN and AlN fine columns. The formed oxides consisted primarily of crystalline $Cr_2O_3$ incorporated with $Al_2O_3$. The oxide layers were thin and compact so as to make CrAlN films more protective than CrN films. In case of CrZrN films, Zr atoms were dissolved in the CrN phase. Zr atoms advantageously refined the columnar structure, reduced the surface roughness, and increased the micro-hardness. However, the addition of Zr did not increased oxidation resistance, mainly because Zr was not a protective element. All the deposited films displayed relatively good oxidation resistance, owing to the formation of the highly protective $Cr_2O_3$ on their surface. The $Cr_{40}Zr_9N$ and $Cr_{31}Zr_{16}N$ films oxidized to $Cr_2O_3$ as the major phase and ${\alpha}-ZrO_2$ as the minor one, whereas the CrN film oxidized to $Cr_2O_3$.
In our study we consider Al2O3 ceramic substrates for Plasma Surface Treatments in order to improve deposited diamond surface and increase diamond deposition rate by applying DBD (Dielectric Barrier Dischrge) system. Because Plasma Surface Treatments was used as a modification method of material surface properties like surface free energy, wettability, and adhesion. By applying Plasma Surface Treatments diamond films are deposited on the Al2O3 ceramic substrates. DC Arc Plasmatron with mathane and hydrogen gases is used. Deposited diamond films are investigated by SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) and XRD (X-ray Diffractometer). Then the C-H stretching of synthetic diamond films by FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) is studied. As a result, nanocrystalline diamond films were identified by using SEM and diamond properties in XRD peaks at (111, $43.8{\Box}$, (220, $75.3{\Box}$ and (311, $90.4{\Box}$ were shown. Absorption peaks in FTIR spectrum, caused by CHx sp3 bond stretching of CVD diamond films, were identified as well. Finally, we improved such parameters as depostion rate ($2.3{\mu}m$/h), diamond surface uniformity, and impurities level by applying Plasma Surface Treatments. These experimental results show the importance of Plasma Surface Treatments for diamond deposition by a plasma source.
Highly transparent ZnO films with low resistivity for thin film solar cell applications were fabricated at low temperature by rf magnetron sputtering. Al-doped ZnO films were deposited on glass substrates at a substrate temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. electrical and optical properties of the ZnO:Al films were investigated in terms of the reparation conditions. The transmittance of the ZnO:Al films in the visible range is 90 %. The lowest resistivity of the ZnO:Al films is about $5.7\times10^{-4}$$\Omega$ cm at the Al content of 2.5 wt% with the film thickness of 500 nm. After deposition, the smooth surface of ZnO:Al films were etched in diluted HCl (0.5%) to investigate the variation of electrical and surface morphology properties due to an textured surface.
Silicon oxide films were prepared by using five kinds of organosilicon compound as gas sources without oxygen by rf plasma-enhanced CVD (PECVD). UV light was irradiated on a substrate vertically during deposition to enhance film oxidation and ablation of carbon contamination in a deposited films. Films prepared with UV irradiation contained less carbon than those prepared without UV irradiation. The oxidation of the films was improved by UN irradiation. The effect of UV irradiation was, however, not observed when the films were prepared with tetramethy lsilane (TMS) which contained no oxygen atom. Dissociated oxygen atoms from an organosilicon compound were excited in the plasma with UV irradiation around the substrate surface and affected the enhancement of film oxidation and ablation of carbon in the films.
$SrBi_{2x}TaO_9$ ferroelectric thin films were prepared on platinized silicon substrates using MOD proces, and crystallization behavior of the films was investigated with variation of the annealing temperature and Bi content x. Crystalline phase of bismuth layered perovskite structure was formed even by baking the films at $800^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes in air, and was not changed by annealing at temperatures raning from $700^{\circ}C$ to $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in oxygen ambient. When $SrBi_{2x}TaO_9$ thin films ($0.8\lex\ie1.6$) were annealed at $800^{\circ}C$, Preferred orientation of the films along c-axis was observed with $x\ge1.2$. With increasing Bi content x, surface morphology of the films was changed from equiaxed grains to elongated grains.
This paper reports a methodology for preparing close-packed two dimensional gold nanoprism films and hexagonal nanoplate films at a hexane/water interface. By controlling the concentration of linker molecules in the hexane layer and the temperature of the colloid solution, highly ordered close-packed nanoplate arrays can be fabricated. These films were investigated to compare their corresponding surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) efficiencies. It was demonstrated that the Au nanoprism films resulted in a stronger SERS enhancement than the Au hexagonal nanoplate films. The difference in the SERS enhancement is attributed to the film array difference, demonstrating that Au nanoprism films have a higher line contact density than their Au hexagonal analogues.
