  • The mud flat in Korea is the geographical feature generated from the sediment of rivers of Korea and China and it is the important topography for pollution purification and fishing industry. The mud flat is difficult to access such that it requires the aerial survey for the high-resolution spatial information of the area. In this study we used drones instead of the conventional aerial and remote sensing approaches which have shortcomings of costs and revisit times. We carried out GPS-based control point survey, temporal image acquisition using drones, bundle adjustment, stereo image processing for DSM and ortho photo generation, followed by co-registration between the spatio-temporal information.

  • The homogeneity of the compacted ground was analyzed using drone-based remote terrain and gravity field data. Among the topographic elements calculated by the hydrological algorithm, the topographic curvature effectively showed the shape of the surface that occurred during the compaction process, and the non-uniformly compacted area could be identified. The appropriate resolution of the digital topography requires a precision of about 10 cm. Gravity field Interpretation was performed to analyze the spatial density change of the compacted ground. In the distribution of residual bouguer gravity anomaly, the non-homogeneously compacted area showed a different magnitude of gravity than the surrounding area, and the difference in compaction was identified through gravity-density modeling. From the results, it is expected that the topographic element and gravitational field analysis method can be used to evaluate the homogeneity of the compacted ground.

  • In Korea, drones, which are at the core of the 4th industrial revolution, are used to promote Korean New Deal policies to digitalize the SOC. Overseas, the use of convergence sensors, such as thermal imaging cameras, on drones is increasing in various industrial fields. In this research, to improve pavement quality in highway bridge pavement construction, a thermal imaging camera was mounted on a drone to measure and verify the temperature of the pavement work section. Using a laser thermometer allows the partial measurement of pavement temperature. It was confirmed that the proposed method allows not only real-time temperature monitoring of the whole pavement work section but also uniformity verification by checking temperature distribution. The proposed method has the potential to control highway pavement quality and enable quick decision-making on traffic opening times by reducing the possibility of misjudging road opening times(pavement surface temperature ≦ 40℃).

DSVM(Dron and Surface Veloctity Meter using doppler radar)

  • Marine debris not only affects the survival of marine life, water pollution, and scenery but also has secondary effects on economic loss and human health. While research on underwater and surface debris is actively ongoing, solutions to marine debris in hard-to-reach blind spots are being developed slowly. To address this problem, we utilize drones to detect and track marine debris in blind spots such as tetrapods. The detected debris is then visualized by calculating its location coordinates using the drone's GPS, altitude, and heading values. The proposed method of using drones for detecting marine debris and matching it with longitude and latitude coordinates provides an effective solution to the problem of marine debris in blind spots.

  • This study addresses the escalating flood damages prompted by recent climate shifts characterized by extreme weather events and proposes rainwater infiltration blocks as a potential solution. Recognizing the limitations inherent in existing inundation simulation methods, we advocate for the integration of novel functionalities, particularly leveraging drone technology. Our research endeavors encompass experimental assessments of inundation and flooding simulation technologies. These evaluations are conducted within areas where rainwater infiltration storage blocks have been implemented, juxtaposed against existing programs utilizing Digital Elevation Models(DEM) and Digital Surface Models(DSM). Through this comparative analysis and a meticulous scrutiny of the adaptability of inundation and flooding simulation to real-world deployment scenarios, we ascertain the efficacy of the simulation program as a decision-making tool for identifying optimal sites for rainwater infiltration storage block installation.

  • Recently, the air quality of South Korea has deteriorated and public interest has been increasing. Various observation means are used for the monitoring of the atmospheric environment, but it relies on the experience and judgment of the observer in the absence of spatial information on the emission facilities. The purpose of this study was to determine the availability of using drones for monitoring air pollutant emission facilities. A texture transformation method was applied to the drone ortho image to detect the small gas emission facility and the slope data calculated by the digital surface model (DSM) was used to reduce the false alarm ratio. As a result, it shows the possibility of using drones in the detection of small gas emission facilities by showing about 80% of positive detection ratio and 40% of false alarm ratio. In the future, various researches are required to the improve positive detection ratio and the reduction of the false alarm ratio. Based on these results, it is necessary to construct a database including 3D spatial information of air pollutant emission facilities.

  • Meteorological phenomena are observed by the Korea Meteorological Administration in a variety of ways (e.g., surface, upper-air, marine, ocean, and aviation). However, there are limits to the meteorological observation of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) that greatly affects human life. In particular, observations using a sonde or aircraft require significant observational costs in economic terms. Therefore, the goal of this study was to measure and analyze the meteorological factors of the vertical distribution of the see-land breeze among local meteorological phenomena using meteorological drones. To investigate the spatial distribution of the see-land breeze, a same integrated meteorological sensor was mounted on each drone at three different points (seaside, bottom of mountain, and mountainside), including the Boseong tall tower (BTT) at the Boseong Standard Weather Observatory (BSWO) in the Boseong region. Vertical profile observations for air temperature, relative humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and air pressure were conducted up to 400 m every 30 minutes from 1100 LST to 1800 LST on August 4, 2018. The spatial characteristics of meteorological phenomena for temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric pressure were not shown at the four points. Strong winds (~8 m s-1) were observed from the midpoint (~100 m) at strong solar radiation hour, and in the afternoon the wind direction changed from the upper layer at the inland area to the west wind. It is expected that the analysis results of the lower atmospheric layer observed using the meteorological drone may help to improve the weather forecast more accurately.

  • This study aimed to develop a flow measurement method using drone in flood season. Measuring flow in all branches is difficult to conduct annually due to budget and labor limitation, safety and river works. Especially when heavy rain like storm comes, changes in stage-discharge relationship should be reviewed; however, it is usually impeded by the aforementioned issues. To solve the problem, it developed a simple measuring method with a minimum of labor and time. A numeric map and numeric orthophoto coordinate of South Korea are mostly based on Transverse Mercator Projection (TM) in accordance with rectangular coordinate system and use World Geodetic Reference System 1980 (GRS80) oval figure for conversion. Applying a concept of aerial photogrammetry, it located four visible Ground Control Points (GCP) near the river at Uijeongbu-si (Singok Bridge) and Yeongdong-gun (Youngdong 2nd Bridge) station and measured the coordinates using VRS DGPS. Hovering at a same level, drones took orthophoto of water surface at an interval of 3 seconds. It defined the pictures with GRS80 TM coordinate system, a rectangular coordinate system and then conducted an orthometric correction using GCP coordinates. According to X and Y coordinate analysis, it estimated the distance between the floating positions at 3 seconds-intervals and calculated the flow through the flow area according to the flow path. This study attested applicability of the flow measurement method using drone in flood season by applying the rectangular coordinate system based on the concept of aerial photogrammetry.

Recently, drones have been used as a major means of attack drones in major wars around the world, and it seems likely that they will evolve into game changers in the future. In the major wars of the 21century, attack drones are used for precision fire-guided or self-destruct attacks, For the purpose of cognitive warfare, its territory is expanding not only to land and air, but also to sea and water. These attack drones will perform multi-domain operations, and for this purpose, the level of autonomy will be improved and High-Low Mix We will continue to develop by strengthening concept-based scalability. North Korea has also been making considerable efforts to operate attack drones for a long time, and activities such as third-country-level self-explosive drones, artificial intelligence-based clustered self-explosive drones, and self-destructive stealth unmanned semi-submersible are expected. In addition to North Korea's provocations and attacks, it is hoped that there will be a need for active follow-up research on our military's countermeasures and utilization plans.
