  • Flexibly-reconfigurable roll forming (FRRF) is a novel sheet metal forming technology conducive to produce multi-curvature surfaces by controlling strain distribution along longitudinal direction. Reconfigurable rollers could be arranged to implement a kind of punch die set. By utilizing these reconfigurable rollers, desired curved surface can be formed. In FRRF process, three-dimensional surface is formed from two-dimensional curve. Thus, it is difficult to predict the forming result. In this study, a regression analysis was suggested to construct a predictive model for a longitudinal curvature of FRRF process. To facilitate investigation, input parameters affecting the longitudinal curvature of FRRF were determined as maximum compression value, curvature radius in the transverse direction, and initial blank width. Three-factor three-level full factorial experimental design was utilized and 27 experiments using FRRF apparatus were performed to obtain sample data of the regression model. Regression analysis was carried out using experimental results as sample data. The model used for regression analysis was a quadratic nonlinear regression model. Determination factor and root mean square root error were calculated to confirm the conformity of this model. Through goodness of fit test, this regression predictive model was verified.

  • DEM must have a high accuracy against the actual topographic model. A model which can compute heights responding to random plane position by using of the topographic data and interpolation must be constructed. Interpolation affected by the accuraccy of the observations included noise, which affected by the slop and curvature weight. Data smoothing is a method to reduce the noise. Average declination and area ratio are variable which result similarity in according to slope. But in local area, area ratio well shows a local change. This study try to classify the terrain by the declination to analysis the effects of the declination and curvature weights, and then to represent the most probable model. The result are following : In terrain classification by the slop, p16 and p24 were fitted in the plane surface fit p16 and S in the varying surface, and S and p24 in the irregular surface in classification by curvature, p24 and S were fitted in the plane or varying surface, and p16 in the irregular surface In case of hybrid, p16, p24 and S are fitted in the plane, varying and irregular surface respectively. Smoothing is the most effective in case of slope of 50 persentage and of curvature weight of 0.0015.

  • This paper presents a method of estimating 3-D surface geometrical features that are necessary for 3-D object recognition and image interpretation. The features, such as surface needle maps and curvatures, are computed from range or intensity images. In general, the range and intensity images are prone to noises, and hence the features computed by differentiation calculi on such a noisy image are hardly applicable to industrial recognition tasks. In our approach, we try to obtain a more accurate estimate of the features by using a least-squares minimization procedure subject to local curvature consistency constraints. The algorithm is robust with respect to noises and is completely independent of the viewpoint at which the image is taken. The performance of the ajgoritlim is evaluated using both synthetic data and real intensity images.

  • In order to study cortical properties in human, it is necessary to obtain an accurate and explicit representation of the cortical surface in individual subjects. Among many approaches, surface-based method that reconstructs a 3-D model from contour lines on cross-section images is widely used. The conventional method detects match points of contours using the minimum straight distance between any pair of contour points which lie on different contours. Then, it generates a triangle strip. In general, however, it might yield small mismatches between contours in case of brain due to complex anatomical structures. In this paper, therefore, we present an improved method for tilting operation that uses the curvature values calculated from surface information. The usefulness of the proposed method has been verified using brain image.

  • The authors investigated the anodization mechanism of aluminum in an oxalic acid solution, and the electrochemical reaction is very unique for pore formation via the dissolution process, which is very dependent on the surface geometry in nanoporous alumina templates. The cross-sectional nanochannels showed that the geometrical curvature of the initial surface can cause the branching of nanochannels to be adjusted in volume occupancy to be direct to the electric field normal to the surface. The nanoporous alumina with the crystalline $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ phase showed hexagonal ordering at a voltage of 40 V, with a nanohole distance of 102 nm from the charge density oscillation of the oxalic acid solution.

  • This paper presents a new robot trajectory generation method based on the curvatre theory of ruled surfacees. robot trajectory is represented as a ruled surface generated by the TCP (Tool center point ) and any one unit vector among the tool frame (usually denoted O, A,N). The curvature theory of ruled surfaces provides the robot control algorithm with the motion property oarameters. The proposed method eliminates the necessity of approximation technic of either joint or cartesian interpolation. This technic may give new methodology of precision robot control. Especially this is very efficient when the robot traces an analytical or form surface if the surface is geometrically modelled.

  • Most of mold manufacturing procedures have been automated by the introduction of NC machine tool and CAD/CAM system. But the three-dimensional surface curvature of the mold must be done by hand work of well-skilled workers. Magnetic abrasive polishing powders were investigated for surface polishing for 3D curvature. This study aims to investigate homogeneously distributed hard phase in Fe matrix and strong bonding between Fe-matrix and hard phase. The NbC powder, $B_4C$ powder and $Al_2O_3$ powder were mixed in Fe-matrix respectively. Mixed Fe-hard phase powders were compacted by press and then these were melted by plasma melting. According to SEM, XRD and OM observation, Fe-NbC magnetic abrsive powder had the most homogeneous distribution and strong bonding. As a result of magnetic polishing, the surface roughness before magnetic polishing, 1 ${\mu}m$ $R_{max}$, was reduced to 0.2 ${\mu}m$ $R_{max}$ over the entire inner surface of the tube.

  • The quadratic error metric (QEM) algorithm has been frequently used for simplification of triangular surface models that utilize the vertex-pair algorithm. Simplified models obtained using such algorithms present the advantage of smaller storage capacity requirement compared to the original models. However, a number of cases exist where significant features are lost geometrically, and these features can generally be preserved by utilizing the advantages of the curvature-weighted algorithm. Based on the vertex-based geometric features, a method capable of preserving the geometric features better than the previous algorithms is proposed in this work. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a simplification experiment is conducted using several models. The results of the experiment indicate that the geometrically important features are preserved well when a local feature is present and that the error is similar to those of the previous algorithms when no local features are present.

  • Surface deflections have a great effect on the external appearance of automobiles. Usually, they are occurred on large flat panels containing sudden shape changes and of very small size about $\pm$30$\sim$300$\mu$m. Since the current numerical method is not sufficient for predicting these defects, the correction of these defects still depends on trial and error, which requires a great deal of time and expense. Consequently, developing the numerical method to predict and prevent these defects is very important far improving cosmetic surface qualities. In this study, an evaluation system that can analyze surface deflections using numerical simulation and a visualization system are reported. To calculate the surface deflections numerically, robust algorithms and simulation methodologies are suggested and to visualize them quantitatively, the curvature variation algorithm is proposed. To verify the developed systems, the experimental die of the handle portion of exterior door is analyzed. The results showed that the experimental and simulational visualization are in good agreement. Compensation methods to correct the surface deflections are also tested. The evaluation system proposed in this paper could be used to predict and minimize the occurrence of surface deflections in die manufacturing.

  • The Objective of this work was to design Composite Antenna Structures (CAS) and investigate impact behavior of CAS which was various curvature. This term, CAS, indicates that structural surface becomes antenna. Constituent materials were selected considering electrical properties, dielectric constants and tangent loss as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, microstrip antenna layers inserted into structural layers were designed for satellite communication at the resonant frequency of 12.5 GHz and final demonstration article was. After making five kinds of curved CAS, which radii of curvature are flat, 200, 150, 100, 50 mm. The antenna performance changed in accordance with variation of curvature. The Reflection coefficient was independent of curvature but the gain decreased with the radius of curvature. The impact test equipment was Dyna-8250 drop weight tester. The impact characteristic in accordance with curvature is maximum absorb energy is same each other. The impact energy was 8.5 J. For various Impact energy test, five energy levels 3 J, 5 J, 7 J, 10 J, 20 J were used. The performance of impact damaged antenna was estimated by measuring the return loss and the radiation pattern. It was revealed that the performance of antenna was not related to the impact damage. Because the impactor did not damage the patch directly. CAS have good impact stability for the antenna performance.
