Measurements of the local heat transfer coefficients on a hemispherically concave surface with a round oblique impinging jet were made. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation of the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystal for the surface temperature measurements. The Reynolds number used was 23,000 and the nozzle -to -jet distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 and the jet angle was $\alpha$=0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$and 40$^{\circ}$. In the experiment, the maximum Nusselt number at all region occurred at L/d(equation omitted)6 and Nusselt number decreases as the inclined jet angle increases. For the normal jet the contours of constant Nusselt number are circular and as the jet is inclined closer and closer to the surface the contours become elliptical shape. The decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d> 0(upstream) on a surface curvature are higher than those on a flate plate and the decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d <0(downstream) on a surface curvature are lower than those on a flate plate. And also, the decreasing rate of local Nusselt number distribution at X/d <0(upstream) exhibit lower than with X/d <0(downstream) as jet angle increases. The second maximum Nusselt number occurred at long distance from stagnation point as jet angle increases.

In the experiment, the Nusselt number at the stagnation point decreases as the jet angle increases and has the maximum value for L/d=6. The X-axis Nusselt number distributions exhibit Secondary maxima at $0^{\circ}C\re $\alpha$\re 15^{\circ}C, L/d\le6$ for X/d<0(upstream) and at $0^{\circ}C\re $\alpha$40^{\circ}C,\;L/d\le4\;and\; at\; 30^{\circ}C\re $\alpha$$\leq$40^{\circ}C,\;L/d\le 6 $for X/d>0(downstream). The secondary maxima occurs at long distance from the stagnation point as the jet angle increases or the nozzle-to-surface distance decreases. The Y-axis Nusselt number distributions exhibit secondary maxima at Y/d=$\pm$2 for $0^{\circ}C\le a\le30^{\circ}C\; and\; L/d\le4, and \;for\;$\alpha$=40^{\circ}C$and L/d=2. The displacement of the maximum Nusselt number from the stagnation point increases as the jet angle increases or the nozzle-to-surface distance decreases and the maximum distance is about 0.67 times of the nozzle diameter. The ratio of the maximum Nusselt number to the stagnation Nusselt number increases as the jet angle increases.
We used Brewster's Law to examine the mechanism of liquid crystal (LC) alignment on an organic insulation layer when subjected to ion-beam irradiation. Brewster's Law implies that the maximum rate polarized ray on a slanted insulation layers on the substrate and it illustrates the dependence of polarization and themechanical structure on the ion beam irradiation process. The pretilt angle of nematic LCs on the organic insulation surface was about $1.13^{\circ}$ for an ion beam exposure of $45^{\circ}$ for 1 minute at 1800eV. This shows the dependence of LC alignment on the polarization ratio in a slanted organic insulation layer.
We measured the simultaneous, time-resolved spectra of photon emission, electron emission, and frictional force during the abrasion single crystal MgO with a diamond stylus in vacuum. phE and EE signal can be detected with millisecond resolution during the wear of a single crystal MgO substrate with a diamond stylus. The emissions and wear behavior are strong function of surface condition, load and stylus velocity. Measurement on annealed vs as-received material show that the luminescence is primarily due to deformation, and the electron emission is primarily due to fracture. These emissions provide insight into the processes responsible for catastrophic failure of ceramics in wear applications.

The aim of this paper is to illustrate which factors influence the martensite grain fineness made by subsequently surface carburizing of extruded component. The effects of surface decarburizing by annealing, residual stress, initial microstructure and crystal oriental made by forward extrusion were taken into account. The available evidence suggests that the residual stress inside crystal or the crystal orientation is the main factor that results coarse martensite while cold extruded component was treated by carburizing.
The temperature-programmed reduction of titanium oxide ($TiO_2$) with pure $CH_4$ was used for the preparation of titanium carbide crystallites. The synthesized materials had the different surface areas, indicating that the structural properties of these materials were strong functions of two different heating rates and space velocity employed. The titanium carbide crystallites were active for $NH_3$ decomposition. Since the reactivity varied with changes in the particle size, ammonia decomposition reactivity over the titanium carbides crystallites appeared to be related to the different active species. The reactivities of titanium carbide crystallites were two and three times lower than those of the vanadium and molybdenum carbide crystallites, respectively. These results suggested that the difference in activities might be related to the degree of electron transfer between metals and carbon.

We report on a wide-viewing liquid crystal (LC) display with bi-level microstructures spontaneously formed by selective wetting on a chemically heterogeneous surface. The bi-level microstructures serve as spacers for maintaining uniform cell gap, as well as protrusions for wide-viewing properties. Our LC cell having the bi-level microstructures shows good electro-optic properties.

We fabricated the outer type-dynamic microlens array using a surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal, UV curable polymer and the stacked liquid crystalline polymer. The outer type-microlens array has a lower driving voltage and fast switching property. It is applicable to a variety of optical systems.
The shape evolution of the interface void of copper metallization for intergrated circuits under electromigration stress is modeled. A 2-dimensional finite-difference numerical method is employed for computing time evolution of the void shape driven by surface diffusion, and the electrostatic problem is solved by boundary element method. When the diffusion coefficient is isotropic, the numerical results agree well with the known case of wedge-shape void evolution. The numerical results for the anisotropic diffusion coefficient show that the initially circular void evolves to become a fatal slitlike shape when the electron wind force is large, while the shape becomes non-fatal and circular as the electron wind force decreases. The results indicate that the open circuit failure caused by slit-like void shape is far less probable to be observed for copper metallization under a normal electromigration stress condition.
