Pt Coating on Flame-Generated Carbon Particles (화염법을 이용한 Pt/C 촉매 제조)

  • Carbon black, activated carbon and carbon nanotube have been used as supporting materials for precious metal catalysts used in fuel cell electrodes. One-step flame synthesis method is used to coat 2-5nm Pt dots on flame-generated carbon particles. By adjusting flame temperature, gas flow rates and resident time of particles in flame, we can obtain Pt/C nano catalyst-support composite particles. Additional injection of hydrogen gas facilitates pyrolysis of Pt precursor in flame. The size of as-incepted Pt dots increases along the flame due to longer resident time and sintering in high temperature flame. Surface coverage and dispersion of the Pt dots is varied at different sampling heights and confirmed by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy-dispersive spectra (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Crystalinity and surface bonding groups of carbon are investigated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy.

  • Recent VLSI requires materials with high dielectric constant in order to reduce their storage capacitor areas. Thin TaOx film was formed from Ta(OCH3)5 by photo-CVD method at a low temperature. The result shows that the film obtained by photo-CVD method is this study has good step coverage, high dielectric constant (20-25) and low leakage current. The high strong peaks from Ta(4f), Ta(4d), and O(ls) levels were observed by XPS analysis. From the diffraction pattern and TEM prcture analysis, the TaOx thin film was observed to be amorphous. This kind of the deposition method could be considered to be a very promising method applied to VLSI.

Titania Supported Tungsten Oxide Species Studied by Raman Spectroscopy

  • Laser Raman spectroscopy has been used to study the tungsta catalyst supported on titania. The surface tungsten species which forms on titania after calcination appeared to possess a structure that is independent of the initial impregnation condition. The surface polytungstate seemed to be stable only at the interfacial region since the crystalline WO$_3$ phase was observed as long as the tungsta loading was in excess of monolayer coverage. The close intact and strong interaction between the polytungstate and the titania could be evidenced from the inhibition of the phase transition of TiO$_2$ from anatase to rutile.

XPS Studies of CO Adsorption on Polycrystalline Nickel Surface

  • The chemisorption of CO molecules on polycrystalline nickel surface has been studied by investigating the resulting chemisorbed species with the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at temperatures between 300K through 433K. It is found that the adsorbed CO molecules are dissociated by the simple C-O bond cleavage as well as by the disproportionation reaction at temperatures above 373K. The former type dissociation is more favored at low coverages and at elevated temperatures. The isotherms of CO chemisorption are obtained from the xps intensities of C 1s peaks, and then the activation energy of the dissociative adsorption is estimated as a function of the CO exposure. These activation energies are extrapolated to zero coverage to obtain the activation energy of chemisorption in which thermal C-O bond cleavage takes place. The value obtained is 38.1 kJ/mol.

  • In order to elucidate conformational properties of bilayer semiflexible amphiphile molecules, we derive a expression of free energy separation with respect to bilayer width, and segment density profiles on the basis of cubic lattice model. Our result shows that at the moderate surface coverage region (i.e., ${\sigma}$ < 0.35), bilayer system tends to have thermodynamically favorable bilayer width corresponding to free energy minimum condition resulting from the major contribution of attractive interaction between chain segments. However such a favorable bilayer width do not occur in the region of high surface converage (i.e., ${\sigma}$> 0.4) where repulsive interaction between chain segments is considered to be dominant.

  • The effect of 2-hydroxyacetophenone-aroyl hydrazone derivatives on the inhibition of copper corrosion in 3N nitric acid solution at 303 K was investigated by galvanostatic polarization and thermometric techniques. A significant decrease in the cor rosion rate of copper was observed in the presence of the investigated compounds. The corrosion rate was found to depend on the nature and concentrations of the inhibitors. The degree of surface coverage of the adsorbed inhibitors is determined from polarization measurements, and it was found that the results obey the Frumkin adsorption isotherm. The inhibitors acted as mixed-type inhibitors, but the cathode is more polarized. The relative inhibitive efficiency of these compounds has been explained on the basis of structure dependent electron donor properties of the inhibitors and the nature of the metal-inhibitor interaction at the surface. Also, some thermodynamic data for the adsorption process ( ΔGa* and f ) are calculated and discussed.

Growth and Electronic Properties of Ag Overlayers on Stepped Pt(211) Surface

  • The growth and electronic properties of ultrathin silver films deposited onto Pt(211) surface were studied using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The AES and LEED results indicate that the silver grows by a layer by layer growth followed by three dimensional islands growth. The XPS results show that the Ag 3d core-level binding energy of Ag overlayers on Pt(211) shifts toward lower binding energy relative to the bulk value at lower Ag coverage. This negative binding energy shift of the Ag 3d core level is explained by the reduced coordination number of the overlayer atoms and the resulting initial state band narrowing effect suggested by Wertheim and Citrin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 1978, 41, 1425].

  • Mo/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method in various conditions to identify the states of surface Mo species. TPR (Temperature-Programmed Reduction) and Raman spectroscopy were applied to analyze the surface Mo species. TPR analysis revealed that MoO3 was reduced to Mo through MoO2, the intermediate state and the increase of Mo loading enhanced the reducibility of Mo oxide till the formation of monolayer coverage. High temperature calcination induced oxygen defects in MoO3 giving their unstable states for easier reduction. Raman spectroscopy analysis showed that the increase of Mo loading induced the polymeric Mo oxide.

  • The electrolytes in thermal batteries are nonconductive solids at ambient temperature, which prevent the self-discharge and corrosion. To meet severe environmental requirements and guarantee acceptable handling yields, all the pellets in cells should have adequate strength, especially for the cathodes due to their poor binding properties among FeS2 particles. By modifying the surface microstructure of FeS2 through molten-salt heat treatment, the inter-particle binding strength is greatly increased, resulting in the enhanced pellet strength and yield. The addition of Li2O also promoted the soft salt coating coverage of hard FeS2 particles, which can be explained by the enhanced wettability of the molten salt.

Variation of Biogenic Opal Production on the Conrad Rise in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean since the Last Glacial Period (남극해 인도양 해역에 위치한 콘래드 해령 지역의 마지막 빙하기 이후 생물기원 오팔 생산의 변화)

  • Biological pump processes generated by diatom production in the surface water of the Southern Ocean play an important role in exchanging CO2 gas between the atmosphere and ocean. In this study, the biogenic opal content of the sediments was measured to elucidate the variation in the primary production of diatoms in the surface water of the Southern Ocean since the last glacial period. A piston core (COR-1bPC) was collected from the Conrad Rise, which is located in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean. The sediments were mainly composed of siliceous ooze, and sediment lightness increased and magnetic susceptibility decreased in an upward direction. The biogenic opal content was low (38.9%) during the last glacial period and high (73.4%) during the Holocene, showing a similar variation to that of Antarctic ice core ΔT and CO2 concentration. In addition, the variation of biogenic opal content in core COR-1bPC is consistent with previous results reported in the Antarctic Zone, south of the Antarctic Polar Front, in the Southern Ocean. The glacial-interglacial biogenic opal production was influenced by the extent of sea ice coverage and degree of water column stability. During the last glacial period, the diatom production was reduced due to the penetration of light being limited in the euphotic zone by the extended sea ice coverage caused by the lowered seawater temperature. In addition, the formation of a strong thermocline in more extensive areas of sea ice coverage led to stronger water column stability, resulting in reduced diatom production due to the reduction in the supply of nutrient-rich subsurface water caused by a decrease in upwelling intensity. Under such environmental circumstances, diatom productivity decreased in the Antarctic Zone during the last glacial period, but the biogenic opal content increased rapidly under warming conditions with the onset of deglaciation.
