  • In this paper, we present noise measurement results of 8 vehicles. The measurement was done by a close proximity method attaching surface microphones on the test vehicle. For the 9 road surface types constructed at Korean highway test road, the vehicles were tested from 50 to 120 km/h at the interval of 10 km/h in normal steady state and inertia cruising conditions. Using the results, we evaluate and discuss the effect of vehicle noise generation depending on the different conditions for vehicle type, speed, road surface and loading condition, especially focused on friction noise between tyre and road surface.

  • In this study, we investigate the effect of SNCM616 alloy steel, which is commonly used in industry, such as rotors and crank-shafts, on the surface roughness of CNC HBM with Ø25 mm, 8-blade reamer to objective is to analyze and present optimal cutting conditions. The higher the feedrate for the spindle speed, the rougher the surface roughness. The surface roughness was found to be better when the feed rate was lower. The resultant value of the most accurate surface roughness is Ra 0.756 ㎛, and the optimal cutting conditions are 25 rpm at spindle speed and 20 mm/min at transfer speed.

  • This paper presents radar remote sensing of soil moisture and surface roughness for vegetated surfaces. A precise volume scattering model for a vegetated surface is derived based on the first-order radiative transfer technique. At first, the scattering mechanisms of the scattering model are analyzed for various conditions of the vegetation canopies. Then, the scattering model is simplified step by step for developing an appropriate inversion algorithm. For verifying the scattering model and the inversion algorithm, the polarimetric backscattering coefficients at 1.85 GHz, as well as the ground truth data, of a tall-grass field are measured for various soil moisture conditions. The genetic algorithm is employed in the inversion algorithm for retrieving soil moisture and surface roughness from the radar measurements. It is found that the scattering model agrees quite well with the measurements. It is also found that the retrieved soil moisture and surface roughness parameters agree well with the field-measured ground truth data.

  • The main problem in porcelain as a high voltage insulator is that the water film is felled on the insulator surface due to rain, flog, and dew. In the presence of contamination. leakage current increases which may lead to flashover that could be followed by an outage of the power system. These days, high voltage polymer outdoer insulators have been studied and widely used, because they have excellent electrical and mechanical properties, superior performance of flashover for contamination. light weight, easy installation or handling. no maintenance during service, competitive price, and so on. First of a1l the excellent performance of the silicone rubber in polluted and wet conditions is attributed to the ability of the material to maintain the hydrophobicity of the surface in the presence of severe contaminants and wet conditions. This is due to a low surface energy of the silicone rubber. But the leakage current and some surface discharge occurs on the surface of insulator when the insulator is used for a long time. So the leakage current and the surface discharge current are important lo estimate the condition of the silicone rubber surface. In this paper, the average leakage current the surface discharge current the surface rubber surface with the salt fog condition for the first stage.

  • Unpaved forest roads are common accessways in mountain areas being used for forestry purposes. The presence of forest roads produces large volumes of surface runoff and sediment yield due to changes in soil properties and hillslope profile. Rainfall simulation experiments were conducted to estimate the impacts of above-ground vegetation and antecedent soil water condition on hydrology and sediment processes. A total of 9 small plots($1m{\times}0.5m$) were installed to represent different road surface conditions: no-vegetation(3 plots), vegetated surface(3 plots), and cleared vegetation surface(3 plots). Experiments were carried out on dry, wet, and very wet soil moisture conditions for each plot. Above ground parts of vegetation on road surface influenced significantly on surface runoff. Runoff from no-vegetation roads(39.24L) was greater than that from vegetated(25.05L), while cleared-vegetation condition is similar to no-vegetation roads(39.72L). Runoff rate responded in a similar way to runoff volume. Soil erosion was also controlled by land cover, but the magnitude is little than that of surface runoff. Even though slight differences among antecedent soil moisture conditions were found on both runoff and soil erosion, runoff rate and soil losses were increased in very wet condition, followed by wet condition. The experiments suggest that vegetation cover on forest road surface seems most effective way to reduce surface runoff and soil erosion during storm periods.

  • Softness is considered one of the most important attributes of hygiene paper such as tissue and towel. Being subjective in nature, however, softness attribute has been generally believed to be impossible to evaluate using objective methods. Hallmark in his pioneering work proposed that tissue subjective softness should be mainly consisted of the bulk softness component and surface softness component. The bulk softness component can be determined by tensile stiffness; the surface softness component by surface tester. The surface friction turns out far more important than the surface roughness in determining the surface softness component. It cannot be too much emphasized that both results of the tensile stiffness and the surface friction should depend on measuring conditions such as an instrument used, sample sizes (e.g., basis weight, length, and width) and operating conditions of the instrument (e.g., gauge length, cross-head speed, size of stylus, and its scanning speed). This indicates that a direct comparison of the test results would be impossible or misleading unless they have been tested under the identical conditions. This may explain why the standard objective test method for tissue softness has not been available at present.

  • Laser surface polishing is a polishing method for improving surface roughness using an integrated laser beam. Using a laser for surface polishing can improve the surface condition without physical contact or chemical action. Laser polishing has mainly been used to polish the surface of diamond or optical articles, such as lenses and glasses. Recently, diverse studies on laser polishing for metals have been conducted. The analytic study of laser surface polishing has been conducted with experimental trials for comparison, so that the proper conditions for laser polishing can be recommended. In this study, laser surface polishing was simulated in order to predict the heat-affected zone on the die steel depending on the power of the pulsed laser. The simulated results were verified by comparing them to those of the experimental trials. Through this study, therefore, the application of FEM to the selection of appropriate laser conditions could be possible.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate experimentally the effect of surface conditions of the plate on the impinging jet noise. The experimental results about the spectrum, the sound pressure level and the directivity are pressented and discussed in relation with the surface conditions. Regardless of the surface conditions, the pure tones of high level are generated at the same frequency band and the overall sound power level of impinging jets is much higher than that of the free jet. However, the velocity dependence of the sound pressure level and the directivity are different between smooth surfaces and rough surfaces. The dependence of sound pressure level on the jet velocity shows that the smooth surface generates quadrupole-type sound like free jets. However, the perforated or the rough surface radiates sound power exactly proportional to the sixth power of the jet velocity, indicating that the source is fixed dipole type. The directivities of 1/3 octave band sound pressure level for both the free and impinging jet show the peak directivity at 115$^\circ$ upstream, probably due to the refraction associated with velocity gradient.

  • The IR signature data of a ship is mainly affected by location, meteorological conditions(atmosphere temperature, wind direction and velocity, humidity etc.), atmospheric transmittance, solar position and ship surface temperature etc. The IR signatures received by a remote sensor at a given temperature and wavelength region is consisted of the self-emitted component directly from the object surface, the reflected component of the solar irradiation at the object surface, and the scattered component by the atmosphere without ever reaching the object surface. Computer simulations for prediction of the IR signatures of ships are very useful to examine the effects of various sensor positions. In this paper, we have acquired the IR signature for different sensor positions by using computer program for prediction of the IR signatures. The numerical results show that the IR signature contrast as compared to the background sea considering the meteorological conditions, solar and sky irradiations.
