Pulsed DB/AB T-Burner Test for Measurement of Combustion Response Function of Solid Propellants

  • T-burner tests of an Al/HTPB propellant in conjunction with a Pulsed DB/AB Method were conducted to find an acoustic amplification factor. Aluminum-free and aluminum-heavy propellants were examined. Instant surface ignition was successfully made by the use of a supplementary propellant of fractionally higher reaction rate. With the presence of higher aluminum concentration in the propellants, the pressure perturbations were promptly damped down and the pressure fluctuations were no longer dispersive. Addition of aluminum particles into the propellant was advantageous for stabilizing pressure-coupled unstable waves.

Effects of Burner Distance on Flame Characteristics at Low Strain Rate Counterflow Edge Flames (저 신장율 대향류 확산화염에서 화염 특성에 관한 버너 간격 효과)

  • Experimental study is conducted to identify the existence of a shrinking flame disk and to clarify its flame characteristics through the inspection of critical mole fraction at flame extinction and edge flame oscillation at low strain rate flames. Experiments are made as varying global strain rate, velocity ratio, and burner distance. The transition from a shrinking flame disk to a flame hole is verified through gradient measurements of maximum flame temperature. The evidence of edge flame oscillation in flame disk is also provided through numerical simulation in microgravity. It is found at low strain rate flame disks in normal gravity that buoyancy effects are importantly contributing to lateral heat loss to burner rim, and is proven through critical mole fraction at flame extinction, edge flame oscillation, and measurements of flame temperature gradient along flame disk surface.

  • The copper incense burner inlaid with gold and silver and purchased by the National Museum of Korea in 2002 was to be corroded severely throughout the surface. It was difficult to recognize the part with silver inlaying. Using the abrasive method with alumina, however, its splendid inlaying patterns were restored. Prior to applying the abrasive method, the quality was examined, and a material that could help bring out the patterns without causing too much damage to the artifact, selected. The overall condition of the incense burner was also checked through X-ray equipment to know the condition of the gold and silver inlaying, and by x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to confirm the composition of the incense burner and gold and silver inlaying. The result of this process is expected to serve as valuable data in future research on incense burners inlaid with gold and silver.

Combustion Characteristic of Anode Off Gas for Fuel Cell Reformer (개질기용 Anode Off Gas의 연소특성에 관한 연구)

  • The reformer system is a chemical device that drives the conversion of hydrocarbon to hydrogen rich gas under high temperature environment($600-1,000^{\circ}C$). Generally, NG(Natural Gas) or AOG(Anode Off Gas) is used as fuel of fuel cell reformer combustion system. The experimental study to analyze the combustion characteristics of a premixed ceramic burner used for 0.5-1.0 kW fuel cell reformer was performed. Ceramic burner experiments using NG and AOG were carried out to investigate the flame stability characteristics by heating capacity, equivalence ratio and different fuels respectively. The results show that surface flames can be classified into green, red, blue and lift-off flames as the equivalence ratio of methane-air mixture decreases. And the stable flames can be established using NG and AOG as reformer fuel in the perforated ceramic burner. In particular, the blue flame is found to be stable at a lean equivalence ratio under different mixture conditions of NG and AOG for the 0.5 to 1.0 kW fuel cell system power range. NOx emission is under 60 ppm between 0.70 to 0.78 of equivalence ratio and CO emission is under 50 ppm between 0.70 to 0.84 of equivalence ratio.

Basic Experiment on the Propagation Characteristics of Premixed Flames in Narrow Annular Coaxial Quartz Tubes (좁은 다중 동축 석영관 내부에서의 예혼합 화염의 전파 특성에 대한 기초 실험)

  • Flame stabilization characteristics of premixed flames in narrow annular coaxial tubes (NACT) were investigated experimentally. The NACT burner was proposed as a model of a cylindrical refractory burner, and it was made of quartz tubes. Flame stabilization conditions affected by the characteristic length of the burner was investigated with the variation of the equivalence ratio and the flow rates. Flame behaviors in narrow spaces could be directly observed. Conclusively, more wide flame stabilization conditions could be obtained at the case of the decreased channel scale. A flame instability, such as combustion noise was detected concerned with the flame oscillation observed at the surface of multi channel stage. Some flame propagation characteristics had complicated tendencies that may exist in practical porous-media combustors. Therefore, this NACT burner can be a basic configuration for the development of flame stabilization model in porous media combustor, and it will enhance our understanding about the behavior of flames in meso-scale combustion spaces.

  • Quenching phenomena is one of major concern in development of millimeter or sub-millimeter scale micro combustor for the size of the combustor is near extinction condition. In this work we focused on the effect of combustor wall condition that was parameterized by Perovskite LSC($La_{0.8}$$Sr_{0.2}$$CoO_3$) redox catalyst. The experiment was done by variable gap-width 2D wall equipment. The flame was produced by premixed methane-air jet issuing from millimeter-scale slot burner and it propagated through the narrow gap of the walls. By comparison of flame behaviour near catalyst-coated wall and simple glass wall, we investigated the effect of possible surface reaction on quenching phenomena. The flame between two plates was observed where the gap of the plates was reduced stepwise from 20mm to a distance of quenching occurrence. The two flames with and without surface modification were almost same by observation. But the gap for the occurrence of quenching was increased between catalyst-coated wall. So we concluded that surface reaction close to combustor wall has a negative effect on micro combustion.

The Applicable Investigation of Response Surface Methodology(RSM) for the Prediction of the Ignition Time, the Heat Release Rate and the Maximum Flame Height of the Interior Materials (내장재의 발화시간, 열방출율 및 최대화염 높이의 예측을 위한 반응표면방법론의 활용성 고찰)

  • The aim of this study is to predict the ignition times and the HRR(heat release rate) for building interior materials. By using the literature data and RSM(response surface methodology), the new equations for predicting the ignition time and the HRR of building interior materials are proposed. The A.A.P.E.(average absolute percent error) and the A.A.D.(average absolute deviation) of the reported and the calculated ignition times by means of the thickness and the density were 4.35 sec and 1.57 sec, and the correlation coefficient was 0.987. The correlation coefficient of the reported and the calculated the net HRR by means of burner width and power was 0.983. Also the correlation coefficient of the reported and the calculated the total HHR by means of burner width and power was 0.999. The correlation coefficient of the reported and the calculated the maximum flame height by means of burner width and power was 0.999. The values calculated by the proposed equations were in good agreement with the literature data.

  • A catalytic burner that utilizes the thermal energy from fossil fuels without the emission of nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) has been developed. For this purpose, the newly developed burner has two features: firstly, it is in the shape of a flat mat so as to maximize its heating surface, and secondly, it adopts premixed combustion so that it can be used in a closed space. In the present study, the burner was used in a radiation-type industrial dryer. This dryer yields thermal energy in the form of thermal radiation in the infrared regime, which has been proved to be effective for drying organic substances under low-moisture conditions. Analysis of the experimental data has proved that the thermal efficiency of the dryer is better correlated to the moisture than to the dry rate

The Study on the Optimization of Premixed Gas Burner and Heat Exchanger (예혼합 가스버너와 열교환기의 최적화 연구)

  • This study was carried out to optimize premixed burner and heat exchanger of the condensing gas boiler which can save energy by utilizing latent heat of combustion gas and reduce pollutant in exhaust gas. The heat exchanger of the gas boiler was composed of three parts, which were an upper, lower, and coil heat exchanger. The upper heat exchanger was placed outside of the premixed burner and a lower heat exchanger was located under the upper heat exchanger. And, coil heat exchanger rounded the outer surface of an upper and lower heat exchanger. The boiler designed by this research reaches turn-down ratio 4:1 in the domain of equivalence ratio 0.75${\~}$0.8 and thermal efficiency of $97\%$. Emission of NOx and CO concentration was under 20ppm and 140ppm at equivalence ratio 0.8. When diameter of the burner is replaced from 60mm to 50mm, emission of CO was reduced about 50ppm remarkably.
