According to the related reports, about 60 percents of ship collisions have resulted from operating mistake caused by human factor. Specially, the report said that negligence of observation caused 66.8 percents of the accidents due to a human factor. Hence automatic detection and tracking of an object from an IR images are crucial for safety navigation because it can relieve officer's burden and remedies imperfections of human visual system. In this paper, we present a method to detect an object such as ship, rock and buoy from a sea IR image. Most edge directions of the sea image are horizontal and most vertical edges come out from the object areas. The presented method uses them as a characteristic for the object detection. Vertical edges are extracted from the input image and isolated edges are eliminated. Then morphological closing operation is performed on the vertical edges. This caused vertical edges that actually compose an object be connected and become an object candidate region. Next, reference object regions are extracted using horizontal edges, which appear on the boundaries between surface of the sea and the objects. Finally, object regions are acquired by sequentially integrating reference region and object candidate regions.
Meteorological phenomena are observed by the Korea Meteorological Administration in a variety of ways (e.g., surface, upper-air, marine, ocean, and aviation). However, there are limits to the meteorological observation of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) that greatly affects human life. In particular, observations using a sonde or aircraft require significant observational costs in economic terms. Therefore, the goal of this study was to measure and analyze the meteorological factors of the vertical distribution of the see-land breeze among local meteorological phenomena using meteorological drones. To investigate the spatial distribution of the see-land breeze, a same integrated meteorological sensor was mounted on each drone at three different points (seaside, bottom of mountain, and mountainside), including the Boseong tall tower (BTT) at the Boseong Standard Weather Observatory (BSWO) in the Boseong region. Vertical profile observations for air temperature, relative humidity, wind direction, wind speed, and air pressure were conducted up to 400 m every 30 minutes from 1100 LST to 1800 LST on August 4, 2018. The spatial characteristics of meteorological phenomena for temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric pressure were not shown at the four points. Strong winds (~8 m s-1) were observed from the midpoint (~100 m) at strong solar radiation hour, and in the afternoon the wind direction changed from the upper layer at the inland area to the west wind. It is expected that the analysis results of the lower atmospheric layer observed using the meteorological drone may help to improve the weather forecast more accurately.
The horizontal to vertical ratio technique in spectral domain is a common useful technique to estimate empircal site transfer function. The technique, originally proposed by Nakamura, is porposed to analyse the surface waves in the micortremor records. The purpose of this paper is to estimate spectral ratio using observed data at the seismic stations in Korean Peninsula from the Fukuoka earthquake including many aftershocks. The results show that most of the stations have fairly good amplification factors. However, some of the stations show that very high amplification factors at narrow high frequency band. Those stations which have very high amplification factors seem to do some kind of mechanical consideration for quality observation.
In this study, we examined the patterns of local circulation over the Daechung lake area through the numerical experiment designed to investigate the impact of lake on the local circulation. The results of numerical experiment showed that the surface temperature predicted by WRF model was lower than the observation, while the wind speed was stronger than the observation. The local circulation over the lake area was characterized by a lake breeze induced by a horizontal thermal contrast between the lake surface and the Surrounding land. At Daecheong Lake, a lake breeze formed at 09 LST and dissipated at 18 LST, with maximum intensity at 15 LST. The vertical extent of the simulated circulation was about 1,200 m. The specific humidity increased as the humid air above the lake moved landward due to the daytime circulation of the lake breeze. The numerical experiments of sensitivity to existence of the lake showed that the simulated surface temperature decreased in the experiment with the lake. Wind speed was more intense around the lake area when the actual land use was substituted by grassland land use. The results of numerical experiments suggest that the lake-induced lake breeze circulation has an effect on the meteorology of planetary boundary layer around the lake.
This study was executed to examine helical structure and other feature, of Taxus cuspidata S. et Z. and Larix gmelinii var. principis-ruprechtii Pilger through photomicroscopic and scanning electron microscopic observation, and the obtained result, were summarized as follows: 1. Tracheid transition from springwood to summerwood was abrupt, mel slightly gradual in Taxus cuspidata S. et Z. and summerwood width of Larix gmelinii var. principis-ruprechtii Pilger was wider than that of Taxus cuspidata S. et Z. 2. Normal vertical and horizontal resin canals and surrounding thick epithelial cells were present in Larix gmelinii var. principis-ruprechtii Pilger but not present in Taxus cuspidata S. et Z. 3. Instead of helical thickening, helical chicks were observed only in summerwood trachieds of Larix gmelinii var. principis-ruprechtii Pilger. However, helical thickenings forming S, Z., and horizontal helix perpendicular to long axis of tracheid were observed in springood and summerwood tracheids of Taxus cuspidata S. et Z. and these helical thickenings were considered as analogous to the innermost layer of secondary wall. 4. Uniseriate and fusiform rays were appeared on tangential surface of Larix gmelinii var. principis-ruprechtii Pilger but oly uniserate ray was observed on tangential surface ot Taxus cuspidata S. et Z. The fusiform rays of Larix gmelinii var. principis-ruprechtii Pilger usually contained one horizontal resin canal bot occasionally two horizontal resin canals were contained in a fusiform ray. 5. Trabeculae and crassulae were observed in the tracheids of Larix gmelimii var. principis-ruprechtii Pilger but not observed in the tracheids of Taxus cuspidata S. et Z.

Effects of bipolar pulse driving frequency between 50 kHz and 250 kHz on the discharge shapes were analyzed by measuring plasma characteristics by OES (Optical Emission Spectroscopy) and Langmuir probe. Plasma characteristics were modeled by a simple electric field analysis and fluid plasma modeling. Discharge shapes by a continuous dc and bipolar pulsed dc were different as a dome-type and a vertical column-type at the cathode. From OES, the intensity of 811.5 nm wavelength, the one of the main peaks of Ar, decreased to about 43% from a continuous dc to 100 kHz. For increasing from 100 kHz to 250 kHz, the intensity of 811.5 nm wavelength also decreased by 46%. The electron density decreased by 74% and the electron temperature increased by 36% at the specific position due to the smaller and denser discharge shape for increasing pulse frequency. Through the numerical analysis, the negative glow shape of a continuous dc were similar to the electric potential distribution by FEM (Finite Element Method). For the bipolar pulsed dc, we found that the electron temperature increased to maximum 10 eV due to the voltage spikes by the fast electron acceleration generated in pre-sheath. This may induce the electrons and ions from plasma to increase the energetic substrate bombardment for the dense thin film growth.
Upper ocean response to typhoon Ewiniar (0603) and its impact on the following typhoon Bilis (0604) are investigated using observational data and numerical experiments. Data used in this study are obtained from the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS), ARGO, and satellite. Numerical simulations are conducted using 3-dimensional Princeton Ocean Model. Results show that when Ewiniar passes over the western North Pacific, unique oceanic responses are found at two places, One is in East China Sea near Taiwan and another is in the vicinity of IORS. The latter are characterized by a strong sea surface cooling (SSC), $6^{\circ}C$ and $11^{\circ}C$ in simulation and observation, under the condition of typhoon with a fast translation speed (8m $s^{-1}$) and lowering intensity (970 hPa). The record-breaking strong SSC is caused by the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water, which produces a strong vertical temperature gradient within a shallow depth of Yellow Sea. The former are also characterized by a strong SSC, $7.5^{\circ}C$ in simulation, with a additional cooling of $4.5^{\circ}C$ after a storm's passage mainly due to enhanced and maintained upwelling process by the resonance coupling of storm translation speed and the gravest mode internal wave phase speed. The numerical simulation reveals that the Ewiniar produced a unfavorable upper-ocean thermal condition, which eventually inhibited the intensification of the following typhoon Bilis. Statistics show that 9% of the typhoons in western North Pacific are influenced by cold wakes produced by a proceeding typhoon. These overall results demonstrate that upper ocean response to a typhoon even after the passage is also important factor to be considered for an accurate intensity prediction of a following typhoon with similar track.

When the typhoons are passing over the ocean, the ocean environment has both physical and biological impacts on the East, South sea and Yellow sea of Korea. As a result of typhoon path, vertical mixing and upwelling injured colder subsurface water, and leaded to phytoplankton blooming along the typhoons. The ocean environment before and after a typhoon played an important role in the biological effect of sea surface. Although the magnitude of sea surface temperature (SST) gets cooler because of typhoon path, other physical and biophysical responses are quite different such as chlorophyll, K490 and SST. The purpose of this study is to compare with the typhoon path that influenced the Korean Peninsula and ocean environment parameters which were observed by ocean color remotely-sensed data. The MODIS data were used to assess the parameters of ocean environments such as K490 and chlorophyll data from 2002 to 2005. Mean chlorophyll from MODIS data increased by about 1-4% in the East sea after the typhoon. Mean concentration of MODIS chlorophyll in the post-typhoon period increased along the typhoon passage. However, Jeju coastal area has different patterns from those of the East sea.
Most natural deposits of sandy soil possess some degree of cementation resulting from the deposition and precipitation of cementing agents. The presence of cementation can have a significant influence on the stiffness and volume change behavior, and the strength of soils. An important feature of deposits of cemented sandy soils is their ability to remain stable in surprisingly high and almost vertical man-made cuts as well as natural slopes. Numerous field observations and studies of failures in slopes of cemented soils have reported that application of conventional analysis techniques of slope stability is inadequate. That is not only due to the fact that the failure surface of the slope is not circular, but also the fact that the average shear stress along the failure surface is much smaller than the shear strength measured in laboratory shear experiments. This observation alerts us to the fact that a mechanism different from conventional Mohr-Coulomb shear failure takes place, which may be related to fracture processes, which in turn are governed by fracture mechanics concepts and theory. In this study, steep slopes in cemented sand were assessed using fracture mechanics concepts. The results showed that FEM coupled with fracture mechanics concepts provides an excellent alternative in the design and safety assessment of earth structures in cemented soils.

Computing the sea level slope at the BM(Bench Mark) in the coast areas around the Korean Peninsula is important for establishing height of BM of the Korean geodetic leveling network. In this study, MSL(Mean Sea Level) was recalculated with the long-term tide observation data based on the IHO(International Hydrographic Organization) standard(18.6 years), and the BM height was reanalyzed by precision leveling. The sea surface topography was analyzed by leveling at Mokpo(Mokpo Starting Point), Busan (09-00-00) and Mukho(20-26-00) BMs, and the sea level slope was computed based on the Korean vertical origin point. As a result of this study, the sea level slope of the west and east coasts between Incheon(-2.27cm) and Mukho(17.56cm) located at $37.5^{\circ}N$ was analyzed as 19.83cm. Domestic geodesists and oceanologists have confronted each other with regard to the issue of latitudinal changes in long term MSL. In the west coast, the Mokpo is 1.12cm higher than Incheon, and the Busan is 2.18cm higher than Mukho. Therefore, the west and east coasts have been analyzed as sea level slope rising to the south. It can be used to solve the reestablishment of the Korean geodetic leveling network and the problem of the elevation discrepancy in the BM.
