  • In this study, we analyzed seasonal variations in carbon dioxide fluxes, concentrations, and soil temperatures over three years in unvegetated tidal flats in the Beolgyo area. We also investigated the correlations between carbon dioxide fluxes and influencing factors. The average carbon dioxide flux was positive in summer and autumn but negative in winter and spring. A positive correlation was observed between carbon dioxide flux and soil temperature in spring whereas a negative correlation was noted in summer. In summer and autumn, as the soil temperature increased, the carbon dioxide flux decreased. In contrast, in spring and winter, as the soil temperature decreased, the carbon dioxide flux increased. Overall, this study reveals the significant influence of soil temperatures on carbon dioxide fluxes between the surface layer of the tidal flat and atmosphere.

  • To investigate the physical characteristics and variations of oceanic parameters in the tropical central North Pacific, oceanographic surveys were carried out in summer of 2006 and 2007. The survey periods were classified by Oceanic Ni$\tilde{n}$o Index as a weak El Ni$\tilde{n}$o in 2006 and a medium La Ni$\tilde{n}$a in 2007. The survey instruments were used to acquire data on CTD (Conductivity Temperature and Depth), XBT (Expendable Bathythermograph), and TSG (Thermosalinograph). The dominant temporal variation of surface temperature was diurnal. The diurnal variation in 2007, when the La Ni$\tilde{n}$a weather pattern was in place, was stronger than that in 2006. Surface salinity in 2006 was affected by a northwestward branch of North Equatorial Current, which implies that the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o affects surface properties in the North Equatorial Current region. Two salinity minimum layers existed at stations east of Chuuk in both year's observations. The climatological vertical salinity section along $180^{\circ}E$ shows that the two salinity minimum layers exist in $2^{\circ}N{\sim}12^{\circ}N$ region, consistent with our observations. Analysis of isopycnal lines over the salinity section implies that the upper salinity minimum layer is from intrusion of the upper part of North Pacific Intermediate Water into the lower part of South Pacific Subtropical Surface Water and the lower salinity minimum layer is from Antarctic Intermediate Water.

  • The DISCOVER Project (${\underline{D}}istributed$ ${\underline{I}}nformation$ ${\underline{S}}ervices$ for ${\underline{C}}limate$ and ${\underline{O}}cean$ products and ${\underline{V}}isualizations$ for ${\underline{E}}arth$ ${\underline{R}}esearch$) is a NASA funded Earth Science REASoN project that strives to provide highly accurate, carefully calibrated, long-term climate data records and near-real-time ocean products suitable for the most demanding Earth research applications via easy-to-use display and data access tools. A key element of DISCOVER is the merging of data from the multiple sensors on multiple platforms into geophysical data sets consistent in both time and space. The project is a follow-on to the SSM/I Pathfinder and Passive Microwave ESIP projects which pioneered the simultaneous retrieval of sea surface temperature, surface wind speed, columnar water vapor, cloud liquid water content, and rain rate from SSM/I and TMI observations. The ocean products available through DISCOVER are derived from multi-sensor observations combined into daily products and a consistent multi-decadal climate time series. The DISCOVER team has a strong track record in identifying and removing unexpected sources of systematic error in radiometric measurements, including misspecification of SSM/I pointing geometry, the slightly emissive TMI antenna, and problems with the hot calibration source on AMSR-E. This in-depth experience with inter-calibration is absolutely essential for achieving our objective of merging multi-sensor observations into consistent data sets. Extreme care in satellite inter-calibration and commonality of geophysical algorithms is applied to all sensors. This presentation will introduce the DISCOVER products currently available from the web site, http://www.discover-earth.org and provide examples of the scientific application of both the diurnally corrected optimally interpolated global sea surface temperature product and the 4x-daily global microwave water vapor product.

  • Physicochemical properties of a series of PC monolayers with different alkyl chains (C24, C20, C16, and C8), at the air/water interface were investigated. The surface pressure is influenced mainly by the hydrophobicity of the PCs, which is confirmed by the curve shape and the on-set value of π-A isotherms at the air/water interface by increasing the number of alkyl chain. The on-set values of surface pressure were 125 Ų/molecule for DOPC(C8), 87 Ų/molecule for DPPC(C16), 75 Ų/molecule for DAPC(C20), and 55 Ų/molecule for DLPC(C24), respectively. The orientations of alkyl chains at the air/water interface are closely connected with the rigidity of the monolayers, and it was confirmed by the tendency of monolayer thickness in ellipsometry data. The temperature dependence of a series of PCs shows that the surface pressure decreases by increasing temperature, because the longer the alkyl chain length, the larger the hydrophobic interaction in surface pressure. The temperature effects and the conformational changes of unsaturated and saturated PCs were confirmed by the computer simulation study of the cis-trans transition with POPC and DPPC(C16). The cistrans conformational energy difference of POPC is 62.06 kcal/mol and that of DPPC(C16) is 6.75 kcal/mol. Due to the high conformational energy barrier of POPC, phase transition of POPC is limited in comparison with DPPC(C16).

  • Periodic characters of water temperature in the regions of the Mishima and the Okinoshima were derived through the analysis of the five days interval data during 1914 to 1970 mainly. In terms of ten days mean temperatures, annual variation function of the Mishima region, Korea Strait, is F($\theta_d$)=17.45-5.34 cos $\theta_d$-3.77 sin $\theta_d$+0.62 sin $2\theta_d$ -0.52 sin $3\theta_d$, where $\theta_d$=$\frac{\pi}{18}$(d-2), d is the order of ten days period 1 to 36. And in the region of Okinoshima, Tsushima Strait, we find F($\theta_d$)=18.88-5.39 cos $\theta_d$-3.60 sin $\theta_d$+0.52 sin $2\theta_d$. The annual mean temperature is 17.4$^{\circ}C$ in the Mishima region, 18.9$^{\circ}C$ in the Okinoshima region, and the amplitudes of annual variation functions are 7$^{\circ}C$ in both regions with minimum temperature in the middle ten days of February, maximum in the middle ten days of August. The long term variations of surface water temperature with 12 5 years period were observed in the annual mean temperature, monthly mean temperatures and the fixed day temperatures of every year. In addition to these, relatively short term variations were also found significant periods of 3 years, 4 years and 2 years, respectively.

  • Purpose: Photovoltaic system is a technique for producing electrical power by utilizing solar energy, which can be used over 20 years with simple maintenance. However, in the case of photovoltaic systems, the energy conversion efficiency decreases as the surface temperature of module increases, compared with other renewable energy technologies. In this regard, PVT module can increase the energy utilization of a composite module as producing heat and electricity simultaneously by using solar energy. Currently, many researches have been promoting in order to develop a high efficiency PVT module in Korea. However, there are a few studies about the performance of the modules corresponding the shape of types and various heat exchangers of the PVT module. In this study, the electrical performance was measured by the change of the ambient temperature and the circulating water temperature using the fabricated PVT module. Method: Experiments were performed using a solar simulator. And this experiment was assumed that the weather condition was in each season, as winter, spring, autumn and summer. It was identified that the I-V curve associated with the change of the experimental conditions and confirmed the change in the electrical characteristics. Result: As a result, it was figured out that the surface temperature and the electrical performance changes in case conditions. The electrical performance was calculated in different temperature condition and the power production was confirmed by the change of module temperature.

  • The spatial and temporal behaviors and fluctuations of the cold water that appeared in the South East Sea and the East Sea coast from 2016 to 2017 were investigated. The water temperature drop was large in the east coast from April to June and the southeast coast from July to September, and the temperature drop period was longer in the southeast coast. The water temperature fluctuated sensitively to the wind direction, and it gradually decreased in the southwest wind but rose as if jumping in the northeast wind. Wind stress and surface water temperature had an inverse correlation, which was larger in Bukhang-Idukseo, and decreased toward the north of Guryongpo. The cold water appeared mainly in Geojedo-Pohang after 1 to 2 days when the southwest wind was strong, but when the wind became weak, it shrank to the Idukseo (Ulgi-Gampo) and extended into the open sea in a tongue shape. Cold water was distributed only in Samcheok-Toseong in mid-May, Idukseo-Guryongpo and Hupo-Jukbyeon-Samcheok from late May to mid-July, and Bukhang-Idukseo in August-September. The intensity of cold water was greatest in mid-August, and the center of cold water descended from the east coast to the southeast coast from spring to summer. The water temperature fluctuation was dominant at the periods of 1 d and 7-21 d. In wavelet spectrum analysis of water temperature and wind, wind speed increase-water temperature decrease showed phase difference of 12 h in 2 d, 18 h in 3 d, 1.5 d in 4-8 d, and 2-3 d in 8-24 d period. The correlation between the two parameters was large in Geojedo and Namhang, Bukhang-Idukseo, Guryongpo-Jukbyeon, and Samcheok-Toseong. Monitoring stations with high correlation in all periods were generally parallel to the monsoon direction.

  • In this paper, a capacitive water level sensor for boilers was developed. In order to accurately monitor the water level in a high-temperature boiler that generates a lot of precipitates, the occurrence of precipitates on the surface of the water level sensor should be small, and a sensor capable of measuring even if the sensor surface is somewhat contaminated is required. The capacitive water level sensor has a structure in which one of the two electrodes is insulated with Teflon coating, and the stainless steel package of the water level sensor is brought into contact with the water tank so that the entire water tank becomes another electrode of the water level sensor. A C-V converter that converts the capacitance change of the capacitive water level sensor into a voltage change was developed and integrated with the water level sensor to minimize noise. The performance of the developed capacitive water level sensor was evaluated through measurement.

  • In this study, the reduction kinetics and behaviors of oxides in the water-atomized iron powder have been evaluated as a function of temperature ranging $850-1000^{\circ}C$ in hydrogen environment, and compared to the reduction behaviors of individual iron oxides including $Fe_2O_3$, $Fe_3O_4$ and FeO. The water-atomized iron powder contained a significant amount of iron oxides, mainly $Fe_3O_4$ and FeO, which were formed as a partially-continuous surface layer and an inner inclusion. During hydrogen reduction, a significant weight loss in the iron powder occurred in the initial stage of 10 min by the reduction of surface oxides, and then further reduction underwent slowly with increasing time. A higher temperature in the hydrogen reduction promoted a high purity of iron powder, but no significant change in the reduction occurred above $950^{\circ}C$. Sequence reduction process by an alternating environment of hydrogen and inert gases effectively removed the oxide scale in the iron powder, which lowered reduction temperature and/or shortened reduction time.
