Condensation is one of the common issues which we can easily see in everyday life. For example, the surface of glasses with cold water is easily moisturized. This wet surface gives us uncomfortable feeling and is sometimes dangerous because it is slippery. As the safety on working space is one of the most important issue on offshore project, condensation is also important matter to take care of with precaution. Since the bottom of vessel or offshore facility is submersed in the water, the risk of having condensate on the steel surface is getting higher because sea water temperature is normally lower than ambient temperature. And if there is any electric equipment or person working in that space, condensation is normally not allowed. The pontoon of semi-submersible drilling rig is such a space which is submersed, with electric and mechanical equipments and person working periodically. To prevent condensation in pontoon, study was conducted by checking several cases.
Degradation characteristics of filament-winded composites due to accelerated environmental aging have been evaluated under high temperature, water immersion and thermal impact conditions. Two kinds of laminated composites coated by an urethane resin have been used: carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy(T700/Epon-826, CFRP) and glass-fiber reinforced phenolic (E-glass/phenolic, GFRP). For tensile strength of $0^{\circ}$ composites, CFRP did high reduction by 25% under the influence of high temperature and water while CFRP showed little degradation. However for water-immersed $90^{\circ}$ composites both CFRP and GFRP showed high reduction in tensile strength. Bending strength and modulus of $90^{\circ}$ composites were largely reduced in water-immersion as well as high temperature environment. Urethane coating on the composite surface improved the bending properties by 20%, however hardly showed such improvement for water-immersed $90^{\circ}$ composites.
H$_2$ bake and GeH$_4$ clean are used as a in-situ pre-clean method in low temperature Si based epitaxial growth technology using rapid thermal processing chemical vapor deposition (RTPCVD). In this paper, the H$_2$ bake and GeH$_4$ clean processes are optimized for low surface defect density using Taguchi method. In H$_2$ bake process, the epitaxial growth temperature affects dominantly on the surface defect density, and the next affecting factors are H$_2$ bake temperature and rinse time in de-ionised water. In GeH$_4$ clean process, GeH$_4$ clean temperature affects most strongly on the surface defect density, and the minor factor is GeH$_4$flow rate. The optimum process conditions predicted fly Taguchi method agree well with tile experimental data in both in-situ clean processes.
USGA(United State of Golf Association)
Concrete is known as a heterogeneous product which is composed of complex chemical composition and reaction. The development of concrete thermal effect during early age is critical on its future structural health and long term durability. When cement is mixed with water, the exothermic chemical reaction generates hydration heat, which raises the temperature within the concrete. Consequently, cracking may occur if the concrete temperature rises too high or if there is a large temperature difference between the interior and the exterior of concrete structures during early age hydration. This paper describes the contribution of novel Fabry-Perot (FP) fiber optic temperature sensors to investigate the thermal effects of concrete hydration process. Concrete specimens were manufactured under various water-to-cement (w/c) ratios from 0.40 to 0.60. During the first 24 hours of concreting, two FP fiber optic temperature sensors were inserted into concrete specimens with the protection of copper tubing to monitor the surface and core temperature change. The experimental results revealed effects of w/c ratios on surface and core temperature developments during early age hydration, as well as demonstrating that FP fiber optic sensors are capable of capturing temperature variation in the concrete with reliable performance. Temperature profiles are used for calculating the apparent activation energy ($E_a$) and the heat of hydration (H(t)) of concrete, which can help us to better understand cement hydration.
Nanofluids is that metallic or nonmetallic nanometer-sized particles are dispersed in liquid and they can be used in various fields to increase the heat transfer rate. This study conducted experiments to evaluate whether the cooling efficiency of nanofluids is better than that of water in spray cooling. A heated surface was designed and fabricated to make the temperature distribution be linear, which was confirmed by three thermocouple measurements under the heated surface. Spray cooling experiments were conducted using water, 0.2% wt. (weight), and 0.5% wt. $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids at the pressure of 0.2 MPa and 0.3 MPa. Based on the results, it is shown that the cooling efficiency of nanofluids is higher than that of water especially in the region of single phase heat transfer. As a result, we can expect that nanofluids can be used as efficient coolants in the cooling of electronic packages where the temperature of the heated surface is not high enough for boiling incipience.
The behavior of hydroxide ions on water-ice films was studied by using $Cs^+$ reactive ion scattering (RIS), low energy sputtering (LES) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). A $Cs^+$ beam of a low kinetic energy (<100 eV) from $Cs^+$ ion gun was scattered at the film surface, and then $Cs^+$ projectiles pick up the neutral molecules on the surface as $Cs^+$-molecule clusters form (RIS process). In LES process, the preexisting ions on the surface are desorbed by the $Cs^+$ beam impact. The water-ice films made of a thick (>50 BL) $H_2$O layer and a thin $D_2O$ overlayer were controlled in temperatures 90~140K. We prepared hydroxide ions by using Na atoms which proceeded hydrolysis reaction either on the ice film surface or at the interface of the $H_2O$ and $D_2O$ layers.[1] The migration of hydroxide ions from the $H_2O/D_2O$ interface to the top of the film was examined as afunction of time. From this experiment, we show that hydroxide ions tend to reside at the water-ice surface. We also investigated the H/D exchange reactions of $H_2O$ and $D_2O$ molecules mediated by hydroxide ions to reveal the mechanism of migration of hydroxide to the ice surface.
The high capillarity of a plastic fiber network having superhydrophilic Si-DLC coating is studied. Although the superhydrophilic surface maximize wetting ability on the flat surface, there remains a requirement for the more wettable surface for various applications such as air-filters or liquid-filters. In this research, the PET non-woven fabric surface was realized by superhydrophilic coating. PTE non-woven fabric network was chosen due to its micro-pore structure, cheap price, and productivity. Superhydrophobic fiber network was prepared with a coating of oxgyen plasma treated Si-DLC films using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). We first fabricated superhydrophilic fabric structure by using a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) non-woven fabric (NWF) coated with a nanostructured films of the Si-incorporated diamond-like carbon (Si-DLC) followed by the plasma dry etching with oxygen. The Si-DLC with oxygen plasma etching becomes a superhydrophilic and the Si-DLC coating have several advantages of easy coating procedure at room temperature, strong mechanical performance, and long-lasting property in superhydrophilicity. It was found that the superhydrophobic fiber network shows better wicking ability through micro-pores and enables water to have much faster spreading speed than merely superhydrophilic surface. Here, capillarity on superhydrophilic fabric structure is investigated from the spreading pattern of water flowing on the vertical surface in a gravitational field. As water flows on vertical flat solid surface always fall down in gravitational direction (i.e. gravity dominant flow), while water flows on vertical superhydrophilic fabric surface showed the capillary dominant spreading.
It was studied the phenomena of transient freezing of an inclined water-saturated enclosure. One side of the test section was cooled and the other sides were insulated. The effects of the initial temperature, the inclination angle on the temperature field and the shape of the ice-water interface were observed. In the beginning of freezing, with increasing the inclination angle the freezing rate was increased and in the stable density layer centered $4^{\circ}C$, the freezing was fast as the convective fluid flow became small. When the initial temperature was above the $4^{\circ}C$, the frozen thickness in the upper part of inclined surface was thinner than that in the lower part, but with time the frozen thickness of upper part was thicker than that of lower part, below the $4^{\circ}C$, the frozen thickness in the upper part was thicker than that of lower part from the begining, and above the $8^{\circ}C$ in the beginning upper part was thinner with concave, but with time thicker the upper part, vanishing concave.
