Spatial distribution and vertical structures of water masses around the Antarctic continental margin are described using synthesized hydrographic data. Antarctic Surface Water (AASW) over the shelf regime is distinguished from underlying other water masses by the cut-off salinity, varying from approximately 34.35 to 34.45 around Antarctica. Shelf water, characterized by salinity greater than the cut-off salinity and potential temperature less than $-17^{\circ}C$, is observed on the Ross Sea, off George V Land, off Wilkes Land, the Amery Basin, and the Weddell Sea, but in some shelves AASW occupies the entire shelf. Lower Circumpolar Deep Water is present everywhere around the Antarctic oceanic regime and in some places it mixes with Shelf Water, producing Antarctic Slope Front Water (ASFW). ASFW, characterized by potential temperature less than about $0^{\circ}C$ and greater than $-17^{\circ}C$, and salinity greater than the cut-off salinity, is found everywhere around Antarctica except in the Bellingshausen-Amundsen sector. The presence of different water masses over the Antarctic shelves and shelf edges produces mainly three types of water mass stratifications: no significant meridional property gradient in the Bellingshausen and Amundsen Seas, single property gradient where ASFW presents, and a V-shaped front where Shelf Water exists.
In this study, the behavior of water or nanofluid droplets impacting upon a hot surface was investigated by visualization of impacting phenomena with time-delayed photographic technique. Changing the mass ratio of nanofluid and the temperature of the heated surface, the characteristics of the spreading behavior and the diameter of spreading liquid film was compared between water and nanofluid droplets. The impacting droplet spreaded as a liquid film after impact and nanofluid droplets spreaded more widely than water droplets. After reaching the maximum diameter, water droplets shrinked more than nanofluid droplets. Based on this, the heat transfer area from a hot surface to impacting nanofluid droplets would be wider than that of impacting water droplets. Considering individual impacting droplet only, spray cooling using nanofluid would be better than using water.
This work examines the dynamic properties of ice surfaces in vacuum for the temperature range of 140~180 K, which extends over the onset temperatures for ice sublimation and the phase transition from amorphous to crystallization ice. In particular, the study focuses on the transport processes of excess protons and chloride ions in ice and their segregative behavior to the ice surface. These phenomena were studied by conducting experiments with a relatively thick (~100 BL) ice film constructed with a bottom $H_2O$ layer and an upper $D_2O$ layer, with excess hydronium and chloride ions trapped at the $H_2O$/$D_2O$ interface as they were generated by the ionization of hydrogen chloride. The migration of protons, chloride ions, and water molecules to the ice film surface and their H/D exchange reactions were measured as a function of temperature using the methods of low energy sputtering (LES) and Cs+ reactive ion scattering (RIS). Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) experiments monitored the desorption of water and hydrogen chloride from the surface. Our observations indicated that both hydronium and chloride ions migrated from the interfacial layer to segregate to the surface at high temperature. Hydrogen chloride gas desorbs via recombination reaction of hydronium and chloride ions floating on the surface. Surface segregation of these species is driven by thermodynamic potential gradient present near the ice surface, whereas in the bulk, their transport is facilitated by thermal diffusion process. The finding suggests that chlorine activation reactions of hydrogen chloride for polar stratospheric ice particles occur at the surface of ice within a depth of at most a few molecular layers, rather than in the bulk phase.
This study was conducted to evaluated the surface(10 variables) and bottom(10 variables) water quality, and sediment(3 variables) in the cage fish farm off Baegyado in Gamak Bay using a multivariate analysis from January 2013 to November 2014. Generally, the environmental data did not show a certain tendency by months during two years investigated. The pairwise simple correlation matrices among variables were also shown. The first four principal components of the surface water in 2013 explain 93% of the total sample variance; the first principal component($z_1$) showed the freshwater inflow and/or precipitation, $z_2$, $z_3$ and $z_4$ related to freshwater inflow and/or precipitation, organic matters and eutrophy, respectively; the first four principal components of the bottom water in 2013 explain 93% of the total sample variance; the $z_1$, $z_2$ and $z_4$ related to freshwater inflow and/or precipitation, and $z_3$ water temperature. In 2014, at the surface water the first three principal components explain 87%; the $z_1$, $z_2$ and $z_3$ related to water temperature, eutrophy and freshwater inflow and/or precipitation, respectively; at the bottom water the first three principal components explain 93%; $z_1$, $z_2$ and $z_3$ related to water temperature, freshwater inflow and/or precipitation and eutrophy. Half of the principal components related to freshwater inflow and/or precipitation.
Hydronic heated road pavement (HHP) systems have been well established and documented to provide road safety in winter season over the past two decades. However, most of the systems run on asphalt, only a few are tested with concrete, and there rarely is a comparison between those two common road materials in their performance. The aim of this study is to investigate the thermal performance of the concrete HHP systems, including surface temperature variations of experimental pavements in winter season. For preliminary study a small-scale experimental system was installed to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics of the concrete HHP in the test field. The system consists of 3 concrete slabs made of 1 m in width, 1 m in length, and 0.25 m in height. In these slabs, circulating water piping was embedded with different pipe depths of 0.08 m (Case A), 0.12 m (Case B), and 0.20 m (Case C) and same horizontal space of 0.16 m. Heating performance in winter season was tested with different inlet temperatures of 25℃, 30℃, 35℃ and 40℃ during the entire measurement period. Overall, the surface temperature of the concrete HHPs remained above 3℃ in all experimental conditions applied in this study. The results of the surface temperature measurement with respect to the pipe depth showed that Case B was the highest among the three cases. However, the closer the circulating water pipe was to the pavement surface, the greater the heat exchange rate. This results is considered that the heat is continuously accumulated inside the pavements and then the temperature inside the pavements increases, while the amount of heat dissipation decreases as the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of circulating water decreases. In this preliminary test the applicability of the concrete HHP on road deicing was confirmed. Finally, the results can be used as a basis for studying the effects of various variables on road pavements through numerical analysis and for conducting large-scale empirical experiments.
Water and oxygen are two of the most essential molecules for many species on earth. Their unique properties have been studied in many areas of science. In this study, the interaction of water and oxygen molecules was observed at the nano-scale. Using molecular dynamics, a water droplet with 30,968 water molecules was simulated. Then, 501 oxygen molecules were introduced into the domain. A few oxygen molecules were attracted to the surface of the water droplet due to van der Waals forces, and some oxygen molecules actually entered the water droplet. These interactions were visualized and quantified at four temperatures ranging from 280 to 370 K. It was found that at high temperatures, there was a higher possibility of the oxygen molecules penetrating the water droplet than that at lower temperatures. However, at lower temperatures, oxygen molecules were more likely to be found interacting at the surface of the water droplet than at high temperatures.
The objective of this research was to find a direct and indirect method to estimate land surface temperature (LST) efficiently, using Landsat images and in-situ measurement. Agricultural fields including paddy fields have long been known to have multi-functions beneficial to the environment and ecology of the urban surrounding areas. Among these functions, the ambient temperature cooling (ATC) effect are widely acknowledged. However, quantitative and regional assessment of such effect has not had many investigations. Thermal remote sensing has been used over urban areas to assess ATC effect, to perform land cover classifications and as input for models of urban surface atmosphere exchange. Here, we review the use of thermal remote sensing in the study of paddy fields and urban climates, focusing primarily on the ATC effect. Landsat satellite images were used to determine the surface temperatures of different land cover types of a $441km^2$ study area in Cheongju, Korea. The results show that the ATC are a function of paddy area percentage in Landsat pixels. Pixels with higher paddy area percentage have more significant cooling effect.
The breakup behaviors of impinging droplet on a hot surface are studied experimentally. The droplets are produced by the dripping method and the breakup behaviors of liquid droplet are recorded by photographs. Experimental conditions are, droplet diameter di : 2.5, 3.2 [mm], weber number : $30{\sim}140$, surface temperature : $28^{\circ}C(room\;temperature){\sim}450^{\circ}C$. Water is used to liquid. As weber number of droplet increases, a liquid sheet, which is formed after the impingement on a hot surface, is disintergrated by the dynamical effect. But at low weber number, it has effected by thermodynamical effect. The breakup behaviors of droplet are divided into three patterns with weber number and surface temperature, non-disintegration, transition and disintegration region. Further, these boundary values are affected by the hot surface temperature and weber number. SMD of breakup droplets are calculated in according to surface temperatures and weber number. The minium SMD of breakup droplets are observed at weber number 65.49, temperature $250^{\circ}C$ and weber number 99.08, temperature $350^{\circ}C$.
Water temperature in the eastern part of the Yellow Sea (EYS) during winter (JFM) and summer (JJA) from 1964 to 2009 and Siberian High Pressure Index (SHI) and Arctic Oscillation index (AOI) during winter (JFM) from 1950 to 2011 were used to analyze long-term variation in oceanic and atmospheric conditions and relationship between winter and summer bottom water temperature. Winter water temperature at 0, 30 and 50 m had fluctuated highly till the late of 1980s, but after this it was relatively stable. The long-term trends in winter water temperature at both depths were separated with cold regime and warm regime on the basis of the late 1980s. Winter water temperature at 0m and 50m during warm regime increased about $0.9^{\circ}C$ and $1.1^{\circ}C$ respectively compared to that during cold regime. Fluctuation pattern in winter water temperature matched well with SHI and AOI The SHI had negative correlation with water temperature at 0 m (r=-0.51) and 50 m (r=-0.58). On the other hand, the AO had positive correlation with Winter water temperature at 0 m (r=0.34) and 50 m (r=0.45). Cyclic fluctuation pattern of winter water temperature had a relation with SHI and AO, in particular two to six-year periodicity were dominant from the early of the 1970s to the early of the 1980s. Before the late of 1980s, change pattern in winter water temperature at 0 and 50 m was similar with that in the bottom water temperature during summer, but after this, relationship between two variables was low.
