This study evaluated the localized stress condition of the real corroded deck surface of an orthotropic steel bridge because severe corrosion damage on the deck surface and fatigue cracking were reported. Thus, a three-dimensional finite element (FE) analysis model was created based on measurements of the corroded orthotropic steel deck surface to examine the stress level dependence on the corrosion condition. Based on the FE analysis results, it could be confirmed that a high stress concentration and irregular stress distribution can develop on the deck surface. The stress level was also increased by approximately 1.3-1.5 times as a result of the irregular corroded surface. It was concluded that this stress concentration could increase the possibility of fatigue cracking in the deck surface because of the surface roughness of the orthotropic steel bridge deck.
The sub-surface stress field beneath the spur gear's contact surface in lubricated condition has been analysed. The surface pressure was obtained by the elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication analysis using the accurate geometric clearances around the contact region of the teeth. The sub-surface stress field was calculated by using the Love's rectangular patch solution. The analysis results show that the sub-surface stress distribution is quite dependent on the surface pressure distribution. The pattern of sub-surface stress field is similar to that of the external load. The depth where the maximum effective stress occurs is not proportional to the intensity of the external load.
The sub-surface stress field beneath the gear's contact surface caused by the surface pressure in lubricated condition is analyzed. To evaluate the influence of the clearances between a gear tooth and a pinion tooth on the stress field, two kinds of tooth profile models - conventional cylinder contact model and new numerical model - were chosen. Kinematics of the gear is taken into account to obtain the numerical model which is the accurate geometric clearances between a gear tooth and a pinion tooth. Transient elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) analysis is performed to get the surface pressure. The sub-stress field is obtained by using Love's rectangular patch solution. The analysis results show that the sub-surface stress is quite dependent on both the surface pressures and the profile models. The maximum effective stress of the new model is lower than that of the old model. The depth where the maximum effective stress occurs in the new model is not proportional to the intensity of the external load.
The tensile surface residual stress in the multi-pass drawn wire deteriorates the mechanical properties of the wire. Therefore, the evaluation of the residual stress is very important. Especially, the axial residual stress on the wire surface is the highest. Therefore, the objective of this study was to propose an axial surface residual stress prediction model of the multi-pass drawn steel wire. In order to achieve this objective, an elastoplastic finite element (FE) analysis was carried out to investigate the effect of semi-die angle and reduction ratio of the axial surface residual stress. By using the results of the FE analysis, a surface residual stress prediction model was proposed. In order to verify the effectiveness of the prediction model, the predicted residual stress was compared to that of a wire drawing experiment.
The influence of surface elasticity and surface residual stress on the elastic field of an isotropic nanoscale elastic layer of finite thickness bonded to a rigid material base is considered by employing the Gurtin-Murdoch continuum theory of elastic material surfaces. The fundamental solutions corresponding to buried vertical and horizontal line loads are obtained by using Fourier integral transform techniques. Selected numerical results are presented for the cases of a finite elastic layer and a semi-infinite elastic medium to portray the influence of surface elasticity and residual surface stress on the bulk stress field. It is found that the bulk stress field depends significantly on both surface elastic constants and residual surface stress. The consideration of out-of-plane terms of the surface stress yields significantly different solutions compared to previous studies. The solutions presented in this study can be used to examine a variety of practical problems involving nanoscale/soft material systems and to develop boundary integral equations methods for such systems.
The subsurface stress field beneath the gear's contact surface caused by the contact pressure in lubricated condition has been calculated. To evaluate the influence of the clearance shape on the stress field, two kinds of tooth profile models were chosen. One is the conventional cylinder contact model and the other is the new numerical model. Love's rectangular patch solution was used to obtain the subsurface stress field. The analysis results show that the subsurface stress is quite dependent on both the contact pressure and the profile model. The maximum effective stress of the new model is lower than that of the old model. The depth where the maximum effective stress occurs in the new model is not proportional to the intensity of the external load.

A mathematical model for the stress free surface profile in Over-Round and Round-Oval grove rolling, which can be used effectively in the calculation of pass area, is presented. The new model has generality, simplicity and accuracy for practical usage. The stress free surface profile of an outgoing stock can be modeled when the maximum spread of it known a priori. The equation for the stress free surface profile is formulated from the linear interpolation of the radius of curvature of an incoming stock and that of roll groove to the axis direction. In developing the analytical model, the effect of rolling temperature and friction between roll and work piece(stock) were not considered since the geometry of roll groove and the incoming work piece were assumed a dominant factor which decides the stress free surface profile of the outgoing stock. A simulation with the analytical model developed also has been carried out to demonstrate the stress free surface profile of the outgoing stock.
Accurate stress intensity factor analyses and crack growth rate of surface -cracked components in inhomogeneous materials are needed fur reliable prediction of their fatigue life and fracture strengths. This paper describes an automated stress intensity factor analysis of three-dimensional (3D) cracks in inhomogeneous materials. 3D finite element method (FEM) was used to obtain the stress intensity factor fur subsurface cracks and surface cracks existing in inhomogeneous materials. To examine accuracy and efficiency of the present system, the stress intensity factor for a semi-elliptical surface crack in a plate subjected to uniform tension is calculated, and compared with Raju-Newman's solutions. Then the system is applied to analyze cladding effect of subsurface cracks in inhomogeneous materials. The results were compared with those surface cracks in homogeneous materials. It is clearly demonstrated from these analyses that the stress intensity factors for subsurface cracks are less than those of surface cracks. Also, this system is applied to analyze cladding effect of surface cracks in inhomogeneous materials.

Turbulent boundary layer pressure fluctuation exerted on the surface of a structure can give rise to a elastic stress wave on the surface of the structure. The stress wave so called surface wave, will not only propagate along the surface of structure but also penerate into the structure. To reduce the transmission of stress wave into the structure the elastomer layer is usually attactched on the surface of structure. The transfer function, which is defined herein as the ratio of stress waves at the surface and bottom of the elastomer layer, is derved by use of the cylindrical coordinates system. The elastodynamics of the elastomer layer subjected to the turbulent boundary layer pressure fluctuation is represented by the simplified one degree-of-freedom model for easy prediction of the stress wave transmission as well as efficient design of the elastomer layer.
