  • A coastwise chemical tanker sailing at full speed has capsized in calm water and whole turing. In the precious paper, we investigated reasons of the accident by demonstrating the proper correction for the free surface effect of the liquid cargo and the bow-sinkage effect. In this paper, we also carry out model experiments of a transverse pressure under the seawater and an outward heel moment according to the heel angle and rudder angle, on the basis of radius of turning circle, ship's speed and drift angle of model ship occurring in turning. It is also shown that the flooding of seawater onto the deck occurring in turning generated a significant outward heel moment and the vertical distance between the center of gravity of the ship and the renter of lateral water drag.

  • Ice Rink is energy intensive building type. Concern of energy saving from buildings is one of very important issues nowadays. New and renewable energy sources for buildings are especially important when we concern about energy supply for buildings. Among new and renewable energy sources, use of seawater for heating and cooling is an emerging issue for energy conscious building design. The options of energy use from sea water heat sources are using deep sea water for direct cooling with heat exchange facilities, and using surface layer water with heat pump systems. In this study, energy consumptions for an Ice Rink building are analyzed according to the heat sources of air-conditioning systems; existing system and sea water heat source system, in a coastal city, Kangnung. The location of the city Kangnung is good for using both deep sea water which is constant temperature throughout the year less than $2^{\circ}C$, and surface layer water which should be accompanied with heat pump systems. The result shows that using sea water from 200m and 30m under sea lever can save annual energy consumption about 33% of original system and about 10% of that using seawater from 0m depth. Annual energy consumption is similar between the systems with seawater from 200m and 30m. Although the amount of energy saving in summer of the system with 200m depth is higher than that with 30m depth, the requirement of energy in winter of the system with 200m depth is bigger than that with 30m depth.

  • A wastewater treatment plant located in coastal areas should be built considering the discharge of rainwater and treated water into the sea. The current Hagik Wastewater Treatment Plant in Incheon City was designed in the surface discharge method, which refers to discharging treated water directly into the sea. This method may cause hydrodynamic issues in a wastewater treatment plant because seawater enters an outfall riser when the level of discharged water is lower than the tidal level on a shore with high tidal range. In this study, a method for installing a weir in the discharge manhole was proposed in order to prevent seawater from entering the outfall riser of a wastewater treatment plant. Its feasibility was reviewed by calculating the hydrodynamic that had occurred due to the installation of the weir. As a result, seawater did not enter in the discharge manhole. Thus, even if the coast of Incheon City reaches the highest tidal level, treated water will be able to be properly discharged.

  • In this study, corrosion fatigue test of SAPH45 steel was performed by the use of plane bending fatigue tester in marine environment and investigated fracture surface growth behavior of base metal and heat affected zone corrosion fatigue. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) Fracture surface growth of heat affected zone (HAZ) is delayed more than that of base matel (BM), and they tend to faster in seawater than in air. 2) Corrosion sensitivity to corrosion fatigue life of HAZ is more susceptible than that of BM. 3)In the case of the corner crack by corrosion fatigue, the correlation between the propagation rate of fracture surface area(dA/dN) and stress intensity factor range(ΔK) for SAPH45 are applied to Paris rule as follows: dA/dN=C(ΔK) super(m) where m is the slope of the correlation, and is about 6.60-6.95 in air and about 6.33-6.41 in seawater respectively.

  • The materials used in a ship screw propeller are commonly made with brass. The seawater corrosion and seawater cavitation of the screw propeller reduces the propulsive performance of the ship. In screw manufacturing, the corrosion rust of the screw propeller is removed through a hand grinding method. The grinding process produces dust of the heavy metals from the brass. The dust creates a poor working environment that is harmful to the health of the workers. An automatic corrosionrust removing apparatus, using a blasting method, was developed for the improvement of screw polishing conditions and its working environment. The performance of this apparatus was investigated by surface roughness, weight loss rate, hardness, electrochemical corrosion resistance, and cavitation erosion, after removing of the corrosion rust under various blasting conditions. Two medias of alumina and emery were used in this experiment. The surface roughness and hardness of the screw were improved by this apparatus. The electrochemical corrosion potential (Ecorr) and current density (Icorr) were measured by the dynamic polarization method, using a potentiostat, under the conditions of surface polishing with grinding, blasting, wire brushing, and fine sand papering. The test results prove that the new corrosion rust-removing apparatus improves the surface performance of a screw propeller.

  • Electropolishing technology uses an electrochemical reaction and improves surface roughness, glossiness, and corrosion resistance. In this investigation, electropolishing was performed to improve the corrosion resistance of super austenitic stainless steel. As a result of electropolishing, surface roughness (0.16 ㎛) was improved by about 76.5% compared to mechanical polishing (0.68 ㎛). In addition, the electropolished surface was smooth because the average and variance values of the depth histogram were small. Tafel analysis was performed after a potentiodynamic polarization experiment with seawater temperature, and the microstructure was compared and analyzed. The corrosion current density at 30 ℃, 60 ℃, and 90 ℃ was reduced by 0.083 ㎂/cm2, 0.296 ㎂/cm2, and 0.341 ㎂/cm2, respectively. Pitting occurred in the mechanical polished specimen at 30 ℃, but partial intergranular corrosion was observed in the electropolished specimen, and pitting occurred predominantly at both 60 ℃ and 90 ℃. In addition, the damage depths of the electropolished specimen were shallower than those of mechanical polishing at 30 ℃ and 60 ℃, but the opposite result was seen at 90 ℃.

  • Crevice corrosion of stainless steels in natural seawater was investigated for several post weld treatments; as-annealed, as-welded, pickled, and ground. The results confirmed the effect of the biofilm on the cathodic reaction leading to an ennoblement of the rest potential. The degree of ennoblement of corrosion potential depends on the surface finish. As-annealed and pickled samples show stable corrosion potential approaching to 200 ~ 300 mV (SCE) while as-welded and ground samples show the fluctuating corrosion potential. This points to a situation where there are conflicting effects determining the trend in free corrosion potential. Crevice corrosion initiation will tend to pull the free corrosion potential in the active direction, whereas the presence of biofilm will tend to ennoble corrosion potential. There was no visible attack on UNS S31803, S32550, and 2205W. Therefore, those stainless steel grades appeared to be resistant to crevice corrosion in natural seawater on condition of weld metal.

  • Biofilm is a structured community of microorganism encapsulated within a self-developed polymeric matrix and adherent to a living or a solid surface. In this study, we investigated the effects of various substrates on the formation of biofilm in Vibrio parahaemolyticus. We found that biofilm formation profoundly increased in a substrate, that consisted of calcium chloride, calcium nitrate, and calcium sulfate in 1% peptone water. On the other hand, a dramatic reduction in biofilm formation was observed in a substrate, that consisted of glucose and ferric chloride in LB broth. These results suggest that V. parahaemolyticus prefer to form a biofilm on the surface of a crustacean or a clam, where calcium ion is rich, and also where seawater temperature is relatively lower. In contrast, high levels of glucose in a crustacean or a clam body resulting from increased seawater temperature, can make V. parahaemolyticus detach from it and lead to free floating.

  • In the western Weddell Sea, winter mixed layer is characterized by near-freezing temperature and higher salinity due to brine injection through sea-ice formation. This layer becomes Winter Water being capped by warmer and less saline Antarctic Surface Water during the sea-ice melt-ing season. In this study, Winter Water was preliminarily identified by the oxygen isotopic com-positions. The ${\delta}^{18}$O values of Winter Water show the progressively increasing trend from south to north in the study area. It presumably reflects the enhanced mixing with Antarctic Surface Water due to the extent of influence by low S'"0 value of sea-ice/glacier meltwater. Correlations between salinity and 6'"0 values of seawater can be used to more generally characterize Winter Water with a view to identification. However, the prediction on the degree of mixing from these relationships needs more detailed isotope data, although this study allows the oxygen isotopic composition of seawater as a tracer to identify the water mass.

  • The equipment for marine IoT service have to overcome the effect of seawater. Furthermore, the free floating transmitter in seawater will be less affected by the seawater environment. The results of the design and fabrication of antenna, which is embedded in buoy, are shown in this research. The proposed antenna is used to supervise the states of fishing gears in monitoring system for real-name system of electric fishing gear. The selected frequency band of the proposed antenna is 920 MHz, and PCB pattern type is selected for subminiature and light weight. It is confirmed that RF characteristics is more degraded, however, the radiation is gradually upward as the contact surface of buoy with seawater is more broaden through the simulation results. That is, the RF performance of the proposed antenna is more deteriorated but beam radiation characteristics is more suited the marine IoT, the seawater effect is more increased. It is expected that the proposed antenna will contribute the implementation of IoT network based on low power wide area (LPWA) when the degradation of RF performance will be settled.
