  • Autofrettage process is used for internal forming and sizing of cylinder designed to withstand high internal pressures. Once the tube is autofrettaged, it needs to be machined to its final dimensions both at the bore and its outer surface. This paper presents an analytical analysis and numerical analysis of machined compound cylinder using finite element code, ANSYS10.0. An analytical model for predicting the level of autofrettage following either inner, outer, or combined machining of the compound cylinder is developed for the autofrettage residual stress field is simulated by an autofrettaged pressure. The autofrettaged pressures are obtained by using trying-error method. As autofrettage percentage is 20 % and 40 %, the numerical results are found to be in almost agreement with the analytical ones. However, as autofrettage percentage is 60 %, the numerical results have a little difference with the analytical ones.

  • Hydrodesulfurization of thiophene was studied over $Ni-W/TiO_2-ZrO_2$ catalysts in a fixed bed flow reactor. The ranges of experimental conditions were at the temperatures between 200$^\circ$C and 360$^\circ$C, the pressures between 20 X $10^5$ Pa. The catalysts were reduced with the flow of 10 L/hr of $H_2$ at the temperature of 350$^\circ$C. It was found that $TiO_2-ZrO_2$ supported catalysts had similar activity to $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ supported. The largest surface areas and the highest acidity occured as the binary oxides were mixed with equal molar ratios. The HDS increased with increasing temperatures, pressures and contact times.

  • In the present paper, the effects of inlet pressure on the heat and mass transfer rates of an air cooler are numerically predicted by a local analysis method. The pressures of the moist air vary from 2 to 4 bars. The psychrometric properties such as dew point temperature, relative humidity and humidity ratio are employed to treat the condensing water vapor in the moist air when the surface temperatures are dropped below the dew point. The effects of the inlet pressures on the heat transfer rate, the dew point temperature, the rate of condensed water, the outlet temperature of air and cooling water are calculated. The condensation process of water vapor is discussed in detail. The results of present calculations are compared with the test data and shows good agreements.

  • Steady two-dimensional flows due to an applied pressure distribution in water of finite depth are considered. Gravity is included in the dynamic boundary condition. Gravity is included in the dynamic boundary condition. The problem is solved numerically by using the boundary integral equation technique. It is shown that, for both supercritical and subcritical flows, solutions depend on three parameters: (i) the Froude number, (ii) the magnitude of applied pressure distribution, and (iii) the span length of pressure distribution. For supercritical flows, there exist up to two solutions corresponding to the same value of Froude number for positive pressures and a unique solution for negative pressures. For subcritical flows, there are solutions with waves behind the applied pressure distribution. As the Froude number decreases, these waves when the Froude numbers approach the critical values.

  • The general shapes of prebreakdown pulses in a discharge gap were calculated and the current pulses due to avalanche were detected in SF6 by changing the polarity of the protrusion placed on an electrode at pressures up to about 400 Kpa. The mathematical model of prebreakdown pulse development with a negative protrusion shows agreement with the observed pulses. No evidence of intense bursts of field-emitted electrons was observed. Breakdown probably results from a single avalanche developing to a critical size. However the calculated shape of prebreakdown current pulse does not agree with the observed pulses with a positive protrusion. The breakdown is preceded by multiple avalanche development at pressures less than about 200 Kpa. This observation has been interpreted as due to the formation of negative ions following photoionization in the gas which drift into the critical volume near a positive protrusion.

  • In this paper, behaviour of underground structural systems due to excavation and change of groundwater level is analyzed using finite elements. Equilibrium equations based on the effective pressure theory and transient flow equations considering the groundwater level are derived. Integration equations are derived using Galerkin's approximation and time dependent analysis is employed to compute groundwater level change and pore pressures. This computed pore pressures are employed in equilibrium equations and then finally displacements and stresses are computed. The developed program is applied to analyze the behaviour of ground excavation below the groundwater level. The program is also applied to multi-step excavation at the same model. The results show that the displacements of the ground surface are much influenced by the change of the groundwater level. Therefore, it is concluded that the change of the groundwater level should be considered in order to analyze the behaviour of the underground structural systems accurately

  • The ignition of aluminum particles under high pressure and temperature conditions is studied. The laser ablation method is used to generate aluminum particles exposed to pressures ranging between 0.35 and 2.2 GPa. A continuous wave $CO_2$ laser is then used to heat surface of the aluminum target until ignition is achieved. We confirm ignition by a spectroscopic analysis of AlO vibronic band of 484 nm wavelength. The radiant temperature is measured with respect to various pressures for tracing of required heating energy for ignition. Then the ignition temperature is deduced from the radiant temperature using the thermal diffusion equation. The established ignition criteria for corresponding temperature and pressure can be used in the modeling of detonation behavior of heavily aluminized high explosives or solid propellants.

  • Wind tunnel pressure tests were conducted on a 1:100 scale model of a large industrial building with solar panels mounted parallel to the flat roof. The model form was chosen to have the same aspect ratio as the Texas Tech University test building. Pressures were simultaneously measured on the roof, and on the topside and underside of the solar panel, the latter two combining to produce a nett panel pressure. For the configurations tested, varying both the lateral spacing between the panels and the height of the panels above the roof surface had little influence on the measured pressures, except at the leading edge. The orientation of the panels with respect to the wind flow and the proximity of the panels to the leading edge had a greater effect on the measured pressure distributions. The pressure coefficients are compared against the results for the roof with no panels attached. The model results with no panels attached agreed well with full-scale results from the Texas Tech test building.

  • This paper describes experimental studies of impact pressure generated by breaking regular waves in shallow water on a vertical cylinder. Experimental work was carried out in a shallow water flume using a 1:30 - scale model of a vertical rigid circular hollow cylinder with a diameter 0.2 m. This represents a monopile for shallow water offshore wind turbines, subjected to depth induced breaking regular waves of frequencies of 0.8 Hz. The experimental setup included a 1 in 10 sloping bed followed by horizontal bed with a constant 0.8 m water depth. To determine the breaking characteristics, plunging breaking waves were generated. Free surface elevations were recorded at different locations between the wave paddle to the cylinder. Wave impact pressures on the cylinder at a number of elevations along its height were measured under breaking regular waves. The depth-induced wave breaking characteristics, impact pressures, and wave run-up during impact for various cylinder locations are presented and discussed.
