In the present study, the characteristics of upward bubble flow were experimentally investigated in a liquid bath. An electro-conductivity probe was used to measure local volume fraction and bubble frequency. Since the gas was concentrated at the near the nozzle, the flow parameters were high near the nozzle. In general their axial and radial values tended to decrease with increasing distance. For visualization of flow characteristics, a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and a thermo-vision camera were used in the present study. The experimental results showed that heat transfer from bubble surface to water was largely completed within z = 10 mm from the nozzle, and then the temperature of bubble surface reached that of water rapidly. Due to the centrifugal force, the flow was more developed near the wall than at bubble-water plume. Vortex flow in the bottom region was relatively weaker than that in the upper region.
Impingement cooling utilizing synthetic jets is emerging as a popular cooling technique because of its high local cooling efficiency. The interaction between the vortex structure of the synthetic jet and the surface is crucial in understanding the mechanism of this technique. In this study, the impinging vortex structure and its advection are investigated by experiments with jet-to-surface spacing $2{\leq}H/D{\leq}7$, and synthetic jet Reynolds number $5120{\leq}Re{\leq}9050$. Using phase-locked particle image velocimetry, ensemble averaged (phase averaged) flow fields are obtained, and vortex identification and quantification techniques are applied. The shape, trajectory, and intensity change of the vortex are assessed. A sharp decline in the vortex intensity and the occurrence of a counter-rotating vortex at the impingement point are observed.

Using the film-based particle image velocimetry, natural convective flows have been measured quantitatively in a rectangular enclosure with a heater located on the bottom surface. The success rate of the present interrogation method has been obtained as a function of the number of particle pairs and the distance between the particle pairs. The influence of the diffraction halo at the center have been effectively eliminated by rotating-subtracting the original Fourier-transformed image. By utilizing the coded multiple pulsed illumination with two different time intervals, the minimum measurable velocity have been improved. The results of the velocity distributions and the heat transfer correlations have been obtained for different locations of heater in the enclosure.

Although the motion of the three-phase contact line on a solid substrate has been extensively studied thus far, the understanding of the dynamics of the contact line of liquid/liquid/gas phases is far from complete. Here we deposit a drop of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on water and HFE-7100 whose free surfaces are exposed to air to observe the flow field around the contact line. By combining the shadowgraph and high-speed imaging techniques, we find that vortices are spontaneously generated at the contact line, which grow in size with time. The flow is attributed to the Marangoni stress that pulls a liquid of lower-surface tension toward a liquid surface having a higher surface tension. However, it is not still clear why the entrained lower-surface-tension liquid should whirl rapidly beneath the contact line. We also visualize the flow by the particle image velocimetry (PIV) to find out that the rotational velocity reaches the order of 1 mm/s near the free surface.
A series of experiments employing particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was conducted to produce benchmark wave kinematics data for regular waves having four different wave slopes in 2-D wave tank. Water velocities and accelerations near the free surface of regular waves were computed from image pair obtained by PIV systems. With the measured wave velocity field, the wave accelerations were computed using a centered finite difference scheme. Both local and convective components of the total accelerations are obtained from experimental data. With increasing the wave slope, the horizontal velocity and the vertical accelerations near the wave crest obtained by PIV technique became larger than theoretical results, which are well-known phenomena of the wave nonlinearity. It is noted that the relative magnitude of convective acceleration to the local acceleration became larger with increasing wave slope.

This study is daytime and nighttime runoff image data caused by heavy rain on May 27, 2013 at Oedo Water Treatment Plant of Oedo-Stream, Jeju to compute runoff by applying Surface image velocimeter (SIV) and analyzing correlation according to current. At the same time, current was comparatively analyzed using ADCP observation data and fixed electromagnetic surface current meter (Kalesto) observed at the runoff site. As a result of comparison on resolutions of daytime and nighttime runoff images collected, correlation coefficient corresponding to the range of 0.6~0.7 was 6.8% higher for nighttime runoff image compared to daytime runoff image. On the contrary, correlation coefficient corresponding to the range of 0.9~1.0 was 17% lower. This result implies that nighttime runoff image has lower image quality than daytime runoff image. In the process of computing current using SIV, a rational filtering process for correlation coefficient is needed according to images obtained.
Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is an undulatory nematode which exhibits two distinct locomotion types of swimming and crawling. Although in its natural habitat C. elegans lives in a non-Newtonian fluidic environment, our current understanding has been limited to the behavior of C. elegans in a simple Newtonian fluid. Here, we present some experimental results on the penetrating behavior of C. elegans at the interface from liquid to solid environment. Once C. elegans, which otherwise swims freely in a liquid, makes a contact to the solid gel boundary, it begins to penetrate vertically to the surface by changing its stroke motion characterized by a stiffer body shape and a slow stroke frequency. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) analysis reveals the flow streamlines produced by the stroke of worm. For the worm that crawls on a solid surface, we utilize a technique of traction force microscopy (TFM) to find that the crawling nematode forms localized force islands along the body where makes direct contacts to the gel surface.
Surface Image Velocimetry (SIV) is an instrument to measure water surface velocity by using image processing techniques. It gives us one of the easiest ways to measure water velocity. However, since it requires a set of plane survey data to estimate the velocity, it may give us some kind of misconcept that its usage would be difficult or cumbersome in spite of its handiness. If it has a feature that can estimate the plane survey data easily, it may be treated as like one of the conventional propeller velocimetries and its applicability would be improved so high. The present study is to propose a method to estimate the plane geometry of the physical coordinate with a calibrated camera. With the feature we can half-automatize the estimating procedure for the whole water velocity field. Photogrammetric technique to calculate the plane coordinates of the reference points with a calibrated camera was studied, which has originally studied for long time in the field of computer vision. By applying this technique to SIV, it is possible to estimate the location of reference coordinates for projective transform without plane survey. With this procedure the cumbersome plane survey for the reference points is omitted. One example application of the developed method showed fairly good results with insignificant errors.

In surface image velocimetry, a wide area of a river is photographed at an angle to measure its velocity, inevitably causing image distortion. Although a distorted image can be corrected into an orthogonal image by using 2D projective coordinate transformation and considering reference points on the same plane as the water surface, this method is limited by the uncertainty of changes in the water level in the event of a flood. Therefore, in this study, we developed a tilt image correction technique that corrects distortions in oblique images without resetting the reference points while coping with changes in the water level using the geometric relationship between the coordinates of the reference points set at a high position the camera, and the vertical distance between the water surface and the camera. Furthermore, we developed a distortion correction method to verify the corrected image, wherein we conducted a full-scale river experiment to verify the reference point transformation equation and measure the surface velocity. Based on the verification results, the proposed tilt image correction method was found to be over 97% accurate, whereas the experiment result of the surface velocity differed by approximately 4% as compared to the results calculated using the proposed method, thereby indicating high accuracy. Application of the proposed method to an image-based fixed automatic discharge measurement system can improve the accuracy of discharge measurement in the event of a flood when the water level changes rapidly.
Knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavity is essential to understand the physiological and pathological aspects of nasal breathing. Several studies have utilized physical models of the healthy nasal cavity to investigate the relationship between nasal anatomy and airflow. Since the final goal of these works is their contribution to the diagnosisand treatment of nasal diseases, the next step on this topic is naturally studies for disordered nasal cavities. In this paper, as the first application, airflows in the normal and abnormal nasal cavities with adenoid vegetation are investigated experimentally by PIV, and comparisons of both cases are appreciated. Dense CT data and careful treatment of model surface under the ENT doctor's advice provide more sophisticatedcavity model. The CBC PIV algorithm with window offset is used for PIV flow analysis. Average and RMS distributions are obtained for inspirational and expirational nasal airflows. Airflow characteristics that are related with the abnormalities in nasal cavity are presented.
