The modern infrared (IR) imaging systems use mainly one or more wavelength bands among short wavelength IR (SWIR), middle wavelength IR (MWIR), and long wavelength IR (LWIR) bands. In the process of IR image synthesis and modeling, IR image wavelength-band conversion which transforms arbitrary band image to other band one is required. The wavelength-band conversion procedure includes a temperature estimation process of an object surface. However, in this procedure, an approximated Planck's radiation equation causes errors in estimated temperature. In this paper, we propose an estimation temperature error attenuation method in IR image band conversion procedure. The estimated temperature is corrected with a slope information of radiance according to it. The corrected temperature is used for generation of the other band IR image. The verification of proposed method is demonstrated through the simulation.
It is desirable to use the square grid analysis with the aid of the stereo vision and image processing techniques in order to automatically measure the surface-strain distribution over a stamped part. But this method has some inherent problems such as the difficulty in enhancement of bad images, the measurement error due to the digital image resolution and the limit of the area that can be measured at a time. Therefore, it is still hard to measure the strain distribution over the entire surface of a medium-or large-sized stamped part even by using an automated strain measurement system. In this study, several methods which enable to solve these problems considerably without losing accuracy and precision In measurement are suggested. The superposition of images that have different high-lightened or damaged part from each other gives much enhanced image. A new algorithm for constructing of the element connectivity from the line-thinned image helps recognize up to 1,000 elements. And the geometry assembling algorithm including the global error minimization makes it possible to measure a large specimen with reliability and efficiency.
This research deals with a problem of reconstructing 3D surface structures from their 2D projections, which is an important research topic in computer vision. In order to provide robust reconstruction algorithm, that is reliable even in the presence of uncertainty in the range images, we first present a detailed model and analysis of several error sources and their effects on measuring three-dimensional surface properties using the space encoded range imaging technique. Our approach has two key elements. The first is the error modeling for the space encoding range sensor and its propagation to the 3D surface reconstruction problem. The second key element in our approach is the algorithm for removing outliers in the range image. Such analyses, to our knowledge, have never attempted before. Experimental results show that our approach is significantly reliable.

Surface Image Velocimetry(SIV) is an instrument to measure water surface velocity by using image processing techniques. Since SIV is a non-contact type measurement method, it is very effective and useful to measure water surface velocity for steep mountainous streams, such as streams in Jeju island. In the present study, a surface imaging velocimetry system was used to calculate the flow rate for flood event due to a typhoon. At the same time, two types of electromagnetic surface velocimetries (electromagnetic surface current meter and Kalesto) were used to observe flow velocities and compare the accuracies of each instrument. The comparison showed that for velocity distributions root mean square error(RMSE) was 0.33 and R-squared was 0.72. For discharge measurements, root mean square error(RMSE) reached 6.04 and R-squared did 0.92. It means that surface image velocimetry could be used as an alternative method for electromagnetic surface velocimetries in measuring flood discharge.
In this study, the applicability of the surface image velocimeter using the far-infrared camera was examined in order to solve the application problem of the measurement in night time, which has been pointed out in previous studies as the limit of the surface image velocimeter. For this purpose, the accuracy evaluation of measurement of the far-infrared camera was conducted for two conditions. Accuracy was evaluated by calculating the relative error of the results of the measurements of surface image velocimeter using the normal video camera during the daytime that was already verified. As a result, the relative error of the surface velocimeter using the far infrared camera was 4.3% at maximum, the average error was about 1%, and the error of the fog condition was maximum 5.2% with an average of 2%. In conclusion, it is possible to measure with high accuracy when using far-infrared camera in a invisible environments where the water flow can not be visualized with a general camera.
Due to the decrease of line width and increase of the integration level of the device, it is expected that 'Bottom-up' method will replace currently used 'Top-down' method. Researches about 'Bottom-up' device production such as Nanowires and Nanobelts are widely held on. To utilize these technologies in devices, properties of matter should be exactly measured. Nano-indenters are used to measure the properties of nano-scale structures. Additionally, Nano-indenters provide AFM(Atomic Force Microscopy) function to get the image of the surface and get physical properties for exact position of nano-structure using this image. However, nano-indenter tips have relatively much bigger size than ordinary AFM probes, there occurs considerable error in surface image by Nano-Indenter. Accordingly, this research used 50nm Berkovich tip and 1um $90^{\circ}$ Conical tip, which are commonly used in Nano-Indenter. To find out the surface characteristics for each kind of tip, we indented the surface of thin layer by each tip and compared surface image and indentation depth. Then, we got image of 100nm-size structure by surface scanning using Nano-Indenter and compared it with surface image gained by current AFM technology. We calculated the errors between two images and compared it with theoretical error.

It is reasonable to use the stereo vision and image processing technique to digitize 3D coordinates of grid points and to evaluate surface strains on a sheet metal parts. However this method has its intrinsic problems such as the difficulty in enhancement of bad images inevitable error due to digital image resolution of camera and frame grabber unreliability of strains and thickness evaluated from coarse grid on the corner area with large curvature and the limitation of the area that can be measured at a time. Therefore it is still hard to measure strain distribution over the entire surface of a medium,- or large-sized stamped part at a time even by using an automated strain measurement system. In this study the curvature correction algorithm based on the grid refinement and the geometry assembling algorithm based on the global error minimization (GEM) scheme are suggested. Several applications are presented to show the reliability and efficiency of these algorithms.

The computer vision system was designed and constructed to measure the weight of a dairy cattle. Its development involved the functions of image capture, image preprocessing, image algorithm, and control integrated into one program. The experiments were conducted with the model dairy cattle and the real dairy cattle by two ways. First experiment with the model dairy cattle was conducted by using the indoor vision experimental system, which was built to measure the model dairy cattle in the laboratory. Second experiment with real dairy cattle was conducted by using the outdoor vision experimental system, which was built for measuring 229 heads of cows in the cattle facilities. This vision system proved to a reliable system by conducting their performance test with 15 heads of real cow in the cattle facilities. Indirect weight measuring with four methods were conducted by using the image processing system, which was the same system for measuring of body parameters. Error value of transform equation using chest girth was 30%. This error was seen as the cause of accumulated error by manually measurement. So it was not appropriate to estimate cow weight by using the transform equation, which was calculated from pixel values of the chest girth. Measurement of cow weight by multiple regression equation from top and side view images has relatively less error value, 5%. When cow weight was measured indirectly by image surface area from the pixel of top and side view images, maximum error value was 11.7%. When measured cow weight by image volume, maximum error weight was 57 kg. Generally, weight error was within 30 kg but maximum error 10.7%. Volume transform method, out of 4 measuring weight methods, was minimum error weight 21.8 kg.

A light beam reflected from a machined surface generally containes information concerning about its surface roughness. This study examines and proposes a surface roughness measurement technique for on-machine measurement of machined surfaces. The technique is based on the measurement of a reflected laser beam pattern and the statistical analysis of its light intensity distribution. The surface roughness was found to be closely related to the standard deviation of the light intensity on the primary axis of the reflected pattern. An image acquisition device is made up of a laser diode, a half mirror, a screen, and a CCD camera. The exact image with the primary and secondary axes of a reflected laser beam pattern is calculated through such image processing algorithm as thresholding, edge detection, image rotation, segmentation, etc. A median filter and a surrounding light correction algorithm are improve the image quality and reduce the measuring error. Using the developed measuring device the effect of screen materials and workpiece and workpiece materials was investigated. Experimental results regarding to relatively high-quality surfaces machined by grinding, polishing, lapping processes have shown the measurement error is within 10% in the range of $0.1{mu}m~0.8{\mu}m R_q.$Therefore, the proposed method is thought to be effectively used when quick measurements is needed with workpieces fixed on the machine.
In this study, a fluorescent silica nano particle is used as the surrogate for challenging test of membrane surface integrity. The particles are functionalized by a fluorescent dying agent so that as an ultraviolet light is imposed a bright fluorescent image from the particles can be taken. If a membrane surface is damaged and has a compromised part larger than the size of surrogate the fluorescent particles would pass through and contained in the permeate. An operator can directly notice whether the membrane surface is damaged or not by detecting a fluorescent image taken from the permeate. Additionally, the size of compromised part is estimated through analysing the fluorescent image in which we surmise the mass of particles included in the permeate by calculating an average RGB value of the image. The pilot scale experiments showed that this method could be applied successfully to determine if a membrane surface had a damaged parts regardless of the test condition. In the testing on the actual damaged area of $4.712mm^2$, the lowest error of estimating the damaged area was -1.32% with the surrogate concentration of 80 mg/L, flux of $40L/m^2/hr$ for 25 minutes of detection. A further study is still going on to increase the lowest detection limit and thus decrease the error of estimation.
