  • The functionally graded material (FGM) is the new concept for a heat resisting material. FGM consists of ceramics on one side and metal on the other. A composition and microstructure of an intermediate layer change continuously from ceramics to metal at the micron level. This study is carried out to analyze the thermal shock characteristics of functionally graded PSZ/ metal composites. Heat-resistant property was evaluated by gas burner heating test using $C_2H_2/O_2$ combustion flame. The ceramic surface was heated with burner flame and the bottom surface cooled with water flow. Also, the composition profile and the thickness of the graded layer were varied to study the thermo mechanical response. Furthermore, this study carried out the thermal stress analysis to investigate the thermal characteristics by the finite element method. Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring was performed to detect the microfracture process in a thermal shock test.

  • The pool-boiling critical heat flux (CHF) of water on small flat plates has been experimentally investigated focusing on the effects of the inclination angle and size of the heated surface under near atmospheric pressure. The second-phase experiment was accomplished to find out the general CHF behavior for over-all inclination angles from -90$^{\circ}$ to 90$^{\circ}$using two plate-type test sections (30$\times$150 mm and 40$\times$150 mm) submerged in a slightly subcooled water pool. Test results generally confirm the first-phase findings and show little effect of inclination angle for inclined upward-facing cases. CHF position moves to lower position with the increase of the heater characteristic size and inclination angle(from -30$^{\circ}$to 60$^{\circ}$).

  • Recently, ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems have been introduced in many modem buildings which use the annually stable characteristic of underground temperature as one of the renewable energy uses. However, all of GSHP systems cannot achieve high level of energy efficiency and energy-saving, because their performance significantly depends on thermal properties of soil, the condition of groundwater, building loads, etc. In this research, the effect of thermal properties of soil on the performance of GSHP systems has been estimated by a numerical simulation which is coupled with ground heat and water transfer model, ground heat exchanger model and surface heat balance model. The thermal conductivity of soil, the type of soil and the velocity of groundwater flow were used as the calculation parameter in the simulation. A numerical model with a ground heat exchanger was used in the calculation and, their effect on the system performance was estimated through the sensitivity analysis with the developed simulation tool. In the result of simulation, it founds that the faster groundwater flow and the higher heat conductivity the ground has, the more heat exchange rate the system in the site can achieve.

  • Dispersion characteristics of surface discharge heat water in shallow region are investigated for coastal power plant with nearly constant depth of 20 meters by observing the seasonal depthwide temperature in several stations, which give or precise horizontal distribution and vertical structure of heat water. Surface discharged heat water in shallow coast in the Yellow Sea relies mainly on ambient tidal flow. so it behaves as free jet when the ambient now is strong and shows plumelike behavior during stagnant tide. According to observation the neat field region is estimated as 200-300 meters and shows distinct vertical profile and exponentially decreasing pattern from discharge point for this region. But there are no remarkable vertical distortion of temperature beyond 800 meters even though it is discharged from surface. Characteristic length scale model, CORMIX3, is applied and compared with the field date Overall tendency of CORMIX3 results resemble well with field data especially in near field and intermediate region.

  • An experimental study is conducted to investigate the characteristics of the ion wind generated by the electric field between a needle electrode and the parallel plate electrodes. The ion wind enhances heat and mass transfer between the surface and the surrounding gas. Moreover such enhancement makes no noise or vibration. This study is conducted to develop the electronic cooling device. The measured gas velocities and heat transfer coefficients are proportional to the applied voltage. The heat transfer coefficient can be increased as compared with a natural convection. The maximum enhancement of heat transfer obtained in this system is $47\%$ for 3 W in heat transfer rate.

  • This paper is to research the heat transfer characteristic in copper-water variable conductance heat pipes(VCHP) with a non-condensable gas and gas reservoir. The heat transfer characteristics in the VCHP have not yet been studied much researches. VCHP are used in many applications. These applications range from thermal control of components and systems on satellites, to precise temperature calibration duties, conventional electronics temperature control and thermal diodes. The practical use of VCHP is a simple way to control the temperature of satellites. As the quantity of NCG was increased, there was an increase in the saturation vapor temperatures. As the input heat has loaded from 90 W to 110 W, the difference of the evaporator surface is lower than $10^{\circ}C$.

  • An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of a coolant circuit arrangement on the heat transfer and air pressure drop of a fin-tube sensible heat exchanger with the corrugated fin surface. The air inlet temperature was set to $23^{\circ}C$,the relative humidity to 50% and the air inlet flow rate to 20, 22, $25m^3/min$, respectively. while the coolant temperature was set to $7^{\circ}C$, and the coolant mass flow rate to 10, 16, 22kg/min, respectively. Experiment showed that the exchanger having a diameter of 12.7mm with parallel circuit does better performance in sensible heat transfer and air pressure drop than those three of diameter of 12.7mm with a series circuit and that with diameter of 15.88mm with a parallel circuit.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential ability of sintered metal tube to promote heat transfer. In the experiment for Freon - 11, the boiling heat transfer on the sintered metal tube of bronze element is investigated and compared with that of the bronze tube (bare tube) atmospheric pressure. The experimental results are obtained as follows : 1) For sintered metal tubes of bronze element with particle diameters which ranges from $79({\mu})\;to\;461({\mu})$ and bare tube, boiling characteristic curves are expressed as : a) Sintered metal tube $$q{\propto}{\Delta}T^{1.05\~1.373}$$ b) Brae tube $$q{\propto}{\Delta}T^{3.096}$$ 2) Compared with that of the bare tube at low temperature difference$({\Delta}T_{sat})$, boiling heat transfer coefficient of the sintered bronze tube are relatively high. 3) There is tendency that curves of boiling heat transfer coefficients of sintered ·bronze tube and bare tube approach each other at rather high temperature difference. It is due to the increasing rate of the former heat transfer coefficient along with temperature difference is smaller than that of the latter. 4) Referring to particle diameter, optimum condition, i. e. , maximum heat transfer coefficient is found to be at approximately 2 mm thickness of sintered layer with $D_p=150({\mu})$.

  • Today's manufacturing industry is facing challenges from advanced difficult-to-machine materials (WC-Co alloys, ceramics, and composites), stringent design requirements (high precision, complex shapes, and high surface quality), and machining costs. Advanced materials play an increasingly important role in modem manufacturing industries, especially, in aircraft, automobile, tool, die and mold making industries. The greatly-improved thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties of the material (such as improved strength, heat resistance, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance), while having yielded enormous economic benefits to manufacturing industries through improved product performance and product design, are making traditional machining processes unable to machine them or unable to machine them economically. In this paper, mechanical characteristic evaluation test of fine powder type WC-Co alloy was accomplished to obtain clear data for miniaturized special die parts machining with high reliability and high quality.

  • The Dish/Stirling system with the Stirling engine is currently used to convert solar energy directly to electrical energy successful operation of dish/Stirling system is supported by hybrid system, which will allow continuous operation driven by solar and combustion heat ins. The hybrid Receiver has to be provided with an additional combustion system. The heat pipe receiver and conbustion system were manufactured and tested for thermal characteristics of receiver. Maximum temperature difference along the heat pipe surface is $200^{\circ}C$. Emission measurements showed low NOx values of 28 to 46 ppm and very high CO values of 18 to 201 ppm.
