For realizing artificial skin sensing as a final goal, a mono-material pressure-conductive rubber sensor which is also sensitive for temperature is described. Firstly, discimination of the hardness and the thermal property of material using a proposed sensor is presented. Furthermore, a tactile sensor constints of four pressure-conductive rubber sensor to discriminate surface model which imitaties the surface roughness of material is proposed.
The purpose of this study is to investigate a possible contribution of nonspecific esterases, which occur in the oral cavity, to the degradation of ester bonds in polymethacrylates. One of the problems connected with the use of composite resins for restorations is their inadequate resistance to wear. It has been shown that methacrylate hydrolysis can be catalyzed by enzymes and that a carboxylic hydrolase (porcine liver esterase) catalyzed the hydrolysis of several mono - and dimethacrylates. The softening effect on a BISGMA/TEGDMA polymer induced by hydrolase will accelerate the in vivo wear of the polymer. Porcine liver esterase (EC 3.1.1.1) 3.2 mol/L $(NH_4)_2$$SO_4$ was obtained from Sigma Chemical Company. The esterase activity of one unit is defined as the amount of enzyme capable of hydrolyzing $l{\mu}mol$ ethyl butyrate per min at pH 8.0 AT $25^{\circ}C$. Phosphate buffer, 10mmol/L, pH 7.0, was made by adjustment of a solution of $Na_2HPO_4$ with $H_3PO_4$. Composite resins used in this study are Silux Plus, Z-100, Durafil VS, and Prisma APH. Cylindrical specimens, 14mm in diameter and 3mm thick, of Silux Plus, Z-100, Durafil VS, Prisma APH were polymerized under the celluloid strip. 60 specimens were divided into 2 groups. One group was emersed only in buffer solution, the other group was emersed in buffer and enzyme solution. Silux Plus and Z-100 were divided into 2 subgroups, one subgroup was cured only Visilux 2. And the other subgroup was cured Visilux 2 and Triaid II. Thereafter, specimens were polished to its best achievable surface according to manufacture's directions. The Vickers hardness of the specimens was measured after 1, 2, 4, 7, 9, 15, 50 days. The solutions were changed after each measurement. Composite resin surfaces were evaluated for the surface roughness with profilometer (${\alpha}$-step 200, Tencor instruments, USA) after 1 and 50 days. And then surfaces of specimens were pictured with stereosopy after 1 and 50 days. The results were as follows. 1. The surface hardness of Silux plus, durafil VS, and Prisma APH were decreased with time. But, the surface hardness of Z-100 was not decreased. 2. The surface hardness of all composite resins was decreased by esterase. 3. Composite resins, which were light-cured by Visilux 2 and concomitantly baked by oven, showed more hardened surface than light-cured by Visilux 2 only. 4. Significant surface changes were occured in Silux plus after esterase treatment.

The purpose of this study is to compare effects of denture cleansers and disinfectants on the color. surface hardness, and surface roughness of reinforced acrylic resin using polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane molecules(POSS resin) to those of common resins. According to manufacturer's instructions, 45 specimens were made from three denture resins(Luciton 199, Paladent 20, POSS resin), and polished. Five denture cleansers(distilled water, glutaraldehyde, alkaline hypochlorites, chlorhexidine, alkaline peroxides) in combination with three denture resins were evaluated before and after immersion for 7 days. Color data in $L^*a^*b^*$ system were measured with a colorimeter. Surface hardness data were measured with a microhardness tester. Surface roughness data were measured with a 3-dimensional surface analyzer. Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and t-test. The results were as follows : 1. All resins(Luciton 199, Paladent 20, POSS resin) showed significant differences in color after immersion in hypochlorites(p<0.05). 2. POSS resin showed significant differences in color compared with Paladent 20 in all denture cleansers, but no statistically significant differences with Luciton 199(p<0.05). 3. Luciton 199 showed significant differences of surface hardness in chlorhexidine, Paladent 20 showed significant differences in glutaraldehyde and chlorhexidine. POSS resin showed a little change of surface in all denture cleanser, but no statistically significant differences(p<0.05). 4. Luciton 199 and Paladent 20 showed significant differences of surface roughness in hypochlorites and glutaraldehyde, and POSS resin showed no statistically significant differences in all denture cleansers(p<0.05).
A novel jewelry master pattern manufacturing process which reduce manufacturing steps by employing a Duraform rapid prototyping mold and a low melting alloy has been suggested. The novel process follows the steps of 'jewelry 3D CAD design ${\rightarrow}$ Durafrom RP mold ${\rightarrow}$ low melting alloy master pattern' while the previous process follows more complicated steps of 'jewelry idea sketch ${\rightarrow}$ detailed drawing ${\rightarrow}$ wax carving ${\rightarrow}$ flask ${\rightarrow}$ silver master pattern.' An upper and a lower part of molds have been manufactured of Duraform powder, of which melting point is $190^{\circ}C$. A maser pattern was manufactured by pouring a low melting alloy of Pb-Sn-Bi-Cd, so called Woods Metal, of which melting point is $70^{\circ}C$, into the mold. The master pattern is a shape of a disk of 20mm diameter that contains various design factors. The variations of dimensions, surface roughness, surface pore ratio were measured by an optical microscope, a surface roughness profilometer, and a Rockwell hardness tester. The pattern made of were maeasured by an optical microscope, a surface roughness profilometer, and a Rockwell hardness tester. The pattern made of low melting alloy has sufficient surface hardness, and surface pore ratio to be used as the jewelry master pattern.
Recently the steel parts used at automobiles are required to be used under high stress more than ever before in need of the weight down. To achieve this requirement of a high strength steel, it must be necessary to decrease inclusion content and surface defect as like decarburization, surface roughness etc.. In this study, the surface conditions are measured to know the influence on fatigue properties by two cases of two-stage shot peening iud single-stage shot peening for two kinds of spring steel(SUP7, SAE9254). This study shows the outstanding improvement of fatigue properties at the case of two-stage shot peening in the rotary bending fatigue test and this is assumed to be from decreasing the surface roughness unchanging the surface hardness increasing the compressive residual stress. Results also show fatigue failures originated at inclusion near surface, and this inclusion type is turned out to be a alumina of high hardness.
This paper presented an experimental study of slip resistance characteristics of shoes and floor surface contact with special focus on the effect of surface roughness, outsole material and mechanical abrasion. The factors that affected the results of slip resistances were investigated for four kinds of rubbers and five kinds of floor samples using the VIT(English XL) tribometer. The slip resistance was observed to increase gradually with increasing roughness for five kinds of floor roughness. In the higher surface roughness (larger than $11.5{\mu}m$), the slip resistance increased more rapidly and exceeded safety criteria at $22.60{\mu}m$. The slip resistance was observed to decrease with increasing hardness of outsole, except for butylenes rubber, which seemed to show the material property. The slip resistance decreased with number of trials. In the first several times(5 or 6 trial), the slip resistance decreased more rapidly, whereafter it approached gradually constant value. The slip resistance of surfaces has generally been shown to increase with floor surface roughness and to decrease with hardness of outsole and number of trials under the wet condition.

In order to plasma-sulfnitride by combining ion-nitriding of a steel and sputtering of MoS$_2$, chromium-molybdenum steel was plasma-sulfritrided using hollow cathode discharge with parallel electrodes which are a main of the steel and a subsidiary cathode of $MoS_2$. The treatment was carried out at 823K for 10.8ks under 665Pa in a 30% $N_2$-70% $H_2$ gas atmosphere. Plasma-sulfnitriding layers formed of the steel were characterized with EDX, XRD, micrographic structure observation and hardness measurement. A compound layer of 8-15$\mu\textrm{m}$ and nitrogen diffusion layer of about 400$\mu\textrm{m}$ were formed on the surface of plasma-sulfnitrided steel. The compound layer consisted of FeS containing Mo and iron nitrides. The nitrides of $\varepsilon$-$Fe_2_3N$ and $\gamma$'-$Fe_4N$ formed under the FeS. The thickness of compound layer and surface hardness were different with the gaps between main and subsidiary cathodes even in the same sulfnitriding temperature. The surface hardnesses after plasma-sulfnitriding were distributed from 640 to 830Hv. The surface hardness was higher in the plasma-sulfnitriding than the usual sulfnitriding in molten salt. This may be due to Mo in sulfnitriding layer.
The effects of processing parameters on the surface properties of the hardened layers processed by the low temperature plasma nitrocarburizing and the low temperature two-step plama treatment (carburizing+nitriding) were investigated. The nitrogen-enriched expanded austenite structure (${\gamma}_N$) or S phase was formed on all of the treated surface. The surface hardness reached up to 1200 $HV_{0.025}$, which is about 5 times higher than that of untreated sample (250 $HV_{0.1}$). The thickness of hardened layer of the low temperature plasma nitrocarburized layer treated at $400^{\circ}C$ for 40 hour was only $15{\mu}m$, while the layer thicknesss in the two-step plama treatment for the 30 hour treatment increased up to about $30{\mu}m$. The surface thickness and hardness increased with increasing treatment temperature and time. In addition, the corrosion resistance was enhanced than untreated samples due to a high concentration of N on the surface. However, higher treatment temperature and longer treatment time resulted in the formation of $Cr_2N$ precipitates, which causes the degradation of corrosion resistance.

Wire brushing, which is a typical surface preparation method for roll bonding, has recently been highlighted as a potentially effective method for surface nanocrystallization. In the present study, the microstructure evolution and hardness of the wire-brushed surface and roll-bonded interface of a 1050 aluminum sheet were investigated. Wire brushing formed protruded layers with a nanocrystalline structure and extremely high surface hardness. After roll bonding, the protruded layers remained as hard layers at the interface. Due to their hardness and brittleness the interface hard layers, can affect the interface bonding properties and also play an important role determining the mechanical properties of multi-layered clad sheets.
Dental Ni-Ti files must ensure stability and resistance to fatigue fracture. DLC and ta-C were coated to remove defects on the surface and ensure stability, and the surface characteristics were investigated. When coated with DLC, it was black, and in case of ta-C coating, it was blue-black. Scratches, which are defects caused by mechanical processing, were formed on the surface of the un-coated Ni-Ti file from the end of the file along the direction of processing, with the Pro-file appearing in the vertical direction and the K-file appearing in the file direction. Scratches were reduced on the coated surface, and the surface roughness was greatly reduced after coating compared to before coating. The un-coated Ni-Ti file had the lowest hardness, the DLC-coated file had the highest hardness, and ta-C showed relatively high hardness. The elastic modulus of the DLC coating film was high, and the ta-C elastic modulus was low. The adhesion of the DLC coating film tended to be higher than that of ta-C, and the wear loss amount of DLC coating of taC was lower. The corrosion potential of the ta-C coating increased significantly, and the corrosion current density decreased.
