  • It has been cleared in previous author's paper that the fatigue life before the pitting on the rolling contact surface with lubricant are influenced by the wear amount. In this study, the wear type has been clarified when wear amount is extremely large such as the case without lubricant. The test of rolling contact fatigue has been conducted under two different of herzian pressures and three different of slide ratios without lubricant. In addition, residual stress and half-value breadth using X-ray diffraction on worn surface have been measured as well as the wear amount. The results show that the pitting type wear by rolling contact fatigue has not been occurred when the wear amount is considerably large. Thus this type of wear has been deduced by the fatigue wear depending on delamination theory.

  • Railway tracks are repeatedly overstressed and damaged owing to increase in passing tonnage and numerous contact cycles between wheels of train and rails. In order to ensure safe train operation, heat-treated rails are used in addition to regular inspection and maintenance of these rails. Normal rails were treated using ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) to strengthen the surface of rails. A few changes in surface properties were detected with respect to hardness and compressive residual stress after UNSM treatment. Wear and rolling contact fatigue tests were performed using rails whose surfaces were hardened by UNSM and heat-treated rails. The amount of wear and fatigue life cycles were measured to estimate the effect of UNSM on the rail material. The material of the surfacehardened rail showed improved wear and rolling contact fatigue properties.

  • In this paper, the procedure to estimate fatigue crack initiation life has been established by considering fretting wear and multiaxial stress states on the contact surface of press-fitted shafts. And a method to calculate the local friction coefficient during the running-in period of fretting wear process has been proposed. The predicted result of worn surface profile in the press-fitted shaft with non-linear local friction coefficient can avoid excessive wear depth estimation compared with that for the case of constant local friction coefficient. Furthermore, the predicted fatigue crack initiation lives based on Smith-Watson-Topper model considering the fretting wear are in good agreement with the experimental data. Consequently, the present method is valid not only for predicting worn surface profile, but also for assessing fatigue crack initiation lives considering the fretting wear during the running-in period in press fits.

  • Fracture, fatigue and wear characteristics of Al-Si alloy used for compressor are experimentally studied. Plane strain fracture toughness test is carried out using three point bending specimen. Fatigue test is performed under constant loading condition and wear test is carried out as a function of sliding velocity and applied load. To obtain the crack propagation characteristics and wear mechanism of Al-Si alloy, fracture and worn surfaces are investigated using SEM. It is verified that fracture and fatigue strength of Al-Si alloy are improved by the fine microstructure of alloy. The wear behavior and specific wear amount of Al-Si alloy are not dependent on the microstructure but on a function of the silicon content. Anodizing on the surface of Al-Si alloy, surface hardness and wear characteristics are improved.

  • The objective of the present paper is to evaluate the effect of the evolution of contact surface profile by fretting wear on the contact stress distribution and fatigue crack initiation site of press-fitted shaft by means of an analytical method based on experimental data. A finite element analysis was performed to analyze the stress states of press-fitted shaft, considering the worn contact surface profiles of shaft. The evolutions of contact stress as wearing of contact surface were analyzed by finite element analysis and fatigue crack nucleation sites were evaluated by fretting fatigue damage parameter (FFDP) md multiaxial fatigue criteria. It is found that the stress concentration of a contact edge in press-fitted sha손 decreases rapidly at the initial stage of total fatigue life, and its location shifts from the contact edge to the inside due to fretting wear as increasing of fatigue cycles. Thus the transition of crack nucleation position in press-fitted shaft is mainly caused by stress change of a contact edge due to the evolution of contact surface profile by fretting wear. Therefore, it is suggested that the nucleation of multiple cracks on fretted surface of press fits is strongly related to the evolution of surface profile at the initial stage of total fatigue life.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of contact surface damage due to fretting in a press-fitted shaft below the fretting fatigue limit are proposed by experimental methods. A series of fatigue tests and interrupted fatigue tests of small scale press-fitted specimen were carried out by using rotating bending fatigue test machine. Macroscopic and microscopic characteristics were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscope or profilometer. It is found that fretting fatigue cracks were initiated even under the fretting fatigue limit on the press-fitted shafts by fretting damage. The fatigue cracks of press-fitted shafts were initiated from the edge of contact surface and propagated inward in a semi-elliptical shape. Furthermore, the fretting wear rates at the contact edge are increased rapidly at the initial stage of total fatigue life. After steep increasing, the increase of wear rate is nearly constant under the load condition below the fretting fatigue limit. It is thus suggested that the fretting wear must be considered on the fatigue life evaluation because the fatigue crack nucleation and propagation process is strongly related to the evolution of surface profile by fretting wear in the press-fitted structures.

  • Rolling friction test was carried out to investigate the effect of the wear amount on rolling contact fatigue process in lubrication oil. The methods of this process were conducted at two Hertzian contact pressure and three slide ratio in each case by employing normalized and annealed carbon steel. During process of the rolling contact fatigue, the number of rotation until surface damage was occurred, the wear amount of rolling contact surface, and residual stress and half-value breadth using X-ray reflection on rolling contact surface were investigated. The result of this study shows that rolling contact fatigue process was directly influenced by wear trend and was confirmed by change of residual stress and half-value breadth on rolling contact surface.

  • The objective of the present paper is to evaluate the effect of the evolution of contact surface profile caused by fretting wear on fatigue life of press-fitted shaft by means of an analytical method based on experimental data. A finite element analysis was performed to analyze the stress states of press-fitted shaft, considering the worn contact profiles of shaft. The fatigue lives of the press-fitted shaft reflecting the evolution of contact stress induced by fretting wear were evaluated by stress-life approach using fatigue notch factor. It is found that the stress concentration of contact edge in press-fitted shaft decreases rapidly at the initial stage of total fatigue life, and its location shifts from the contact edge to the inside with increasing number of fatigue cycles. Thus the change of crack nucleation position in press-fitted shaft is mainly caused by the stress change of contact edge due to the evolution of contact surface profile by fretting wear. Furthermore, the estimated fatigue lives by stress-life approach at the end of running-in period of the fretting wear process corresponded well to the experimental results. It is thus suggested that the effect of fretting wear on fatigue life in press fits is strongly related to the evolution of surface profile at the initial stage of total fatigue life.

  • Gear transmission system is widely applied in engineering. As the problem of contact fatigue, wear, lubrication failure etc, the condition of gear teeth contacts will be worse. The vibration and sound signals in the gear system will be affected by the some failures like scuffing, abrasive wear and spalling due to the deterioration of gear teeth surface. By studying the estimation of specific film thickness, measurement of reduction in tooth thickness, visual examination of wear mechanisms on the gear teeth and their effects on the statistical parameters of vibration and sound signals, the research obtained the satisfactory results on accessing the surface fatigue wear in a spur gear system. The paper utilizes the relationship between statistical parameters obtained from sound signals and Stribeck curve to confirm the hypothesis of dependency of surface fatigue wear, specific film thickness.
