The nanosecond laser assisted ablation have been investigated. The biocompatable polymer PMMA was employed as the target material and the two distinctive surface conditions were test. The first surface condition is a dry surface for which the target surface is exposed to air and the second surface condition is the wet surface for which the target surface is covered with dehydrated water. The ablation volume, the laser induced acoustic wave, the laser induced plasma were investigated for both wet and dry condition. The nanosecond laser pulse ablatied more on the wet surface compared to the dry surface. The enhanced ablation of wet surface is attributed to the confined acoustic wave and the laser-induced plasma in the liquid layer.

This research was conducted to evaluate the adhesion in tension of the polymer mortars for cement concrete repair. Various polymer types, binder ratios, and wet/dry conditions of the surface were considered in this study. Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and ethylen vinyl acetate (EVA) used for polymer cement mortars. Epoxy resin (EP), and unsaturated polyester resin (UP) were used for polymer mertars. Adhesion in tension for the dry condition of the substrate surface was higher than that for the wet condition of the substrate surface under the same binder ratio. Therefore, in repairing concrete, the dry surface condition was effective on adhesion.
Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of the different condition of leg support surface on the upper extremity and core muscle activity during the push-up exercise. Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects that were practicable push-ups were recruited in this study. Subjects were instructed the push-up exercise in the different condition of the leg support surface. Each condition of support surface was set to the high and lower, and the unstable and stable condition. Muscle activation was measured by using the surface electromyography (EMG), and recorded from the triceps brachii, serratus anterior, latissimus dorsi, rectus abdominis, abdominal external oblique, and erector spinea muscle. Results: In the results of experiments, there was no significant difference of muscle activation in upper extremity between the high unstable and high stable support surface. By contrast, muscle activation of the rectus abdominis and abdominal external oblique was significantly higher in the low unstable support surface, compared with those of the low stable support surface. It is well known that the core muscle was important to stabilization of trunk stability. Conclusion: This result demonstrates that the low and unstable support surface for the lower extremity was suited for training of core muscle for trunk stabilization during the push-up exercise.

Cathodic protection is being widely used to protect steel structures in sea water environment, In order to protect steel structures completely, the flow condition of sea water surrounding with this structures and the surface condition of the structures must be considered for a desirable design of cathodic protection. In this study, the optimum protection potential and current density were investigated in terms of cathodic current density, surface condition and a flow condition of sea water. The optium protection potential of the cleaned specimen was -770 mV(SCE) and below. However in the case of the rusted specimen, its potential was -700 mV(SCE) and below, which was somewhat positive than the cleaned one irrespective of flow condition. The optimum cathodic protection current density for both the cleaned and rusted specimens was 100 mA/$\textrm{m}^2$, however, on the flow condition, 200 mA/$\textrm{m}^2$ to be supplied for cathodic protection of steel structures completely for both cleaned and rusted specimens.

This paper aims to clarify the effects of grinding conditions on the ground surface and bending strength in surface grinding of various ferrites with diamond wheel. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. The surface roughness becomes better at lower wheel speed in the case of v/V=1$\times$10-3, and the condition of v/V=1$\times$10-4shows the best performance for the finish grinding. When the relative contact temperature becomes lower at a constant value of v/V, the ground surface exhibits lower roughness. The ground surface shows that the fracture process during grinding becomes more brittle at the higher value of v/V. The damage depth which affect the bending strength is below 10$\mu$m in the grinding condition of S=10㎣/mm.s with the diamond tool after dressing & truing, however, the depth increases with increasing removal rate(S). When the strength degradation due to grinding is larger, the removal depth for the recovery of strength requires a larger size.
The objective of the present work is to examine evaporation cooling of droplet due to surface roughness under radiative heat input condition. The surface temperatures varied from $80\~160^{\circ}C$ on aluminum alloy (AL 2024) and surface roughness was $0.18{\mu}m,\;1.36{\mu}m$. The results are as follows; Regardless of surface roughness under radiative heat input condition, as droplet diameter is larger, the in-depth temperature of solid decreases and evaporation time increases. In the case of $0.18{\mu}m\;and\;1.36{\mu}m$ of surface roughness, the larger the surface roughness is, the less the evaporation time is and the larger the temperature within the solid is. In the case of $Ra=0.18{\mu}m$ evaporation time and time averaged heat flux for radiative heat input case is shorter than for the conductive case.

Effects of elevated air temperature and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) concentration on the leaf surface structures were investigated in Liriodendron tulipifera (yellow poplar) and Populus tomentiglandulosa (Suwon poplar). Cuttings of the two tree species were exposed to elevated air temperatures at $27/22^{\circ}C$ (day/night) and $CO_2$ concentrations at 770/790 ppm for three months. The abaxial leaf surface of yellow poplar under an ambient condition ($22/17^{\circ}C$ and 380/400 ppm) had stomata and epicuticular waxes (transversely ridged rodlets). A prominent increase in the density of epicuticular waxes was found on the leaves under the elevated condition. Meanwhile, the abaxial leaf surface of Suwon poplar under an ambient condition was covered with long trichomes. The leaves under the elevated condition possessed a higher amount of long trichomes than those under the ambient condition. These results suggest that the two poplar species may change their leaf surface structures under the elevated air temperature and $CO_2$ concentration condition for acclimation of increased photosynthesis.
In this paper, the influence of the table speed, metal removal rate and grinding fluid on long wheel workpiece contact zone at high effect grinding was investigated by theoretical analyses and measuring the temperature, and discussed by the temperature distribution in grinding surface layer. Main results obtained are as follows, 1) Rega.dless of the table speed, the temperature gap of the workpiece(heat influx) is about 6-8 times as high in dry condition as in wet condition. 2) Good grinding condition can be obtained owing to the effect of grinding fluid without any burning defect under the condition of the metal removal rate(1.0mm$^3$/mm.s) in case of wet grinding. 3) When the depth from the surface layer is about 1.25-1.5mm under the condition of the slow table speed, surface temperature goes up higher as the table speed slows down, because long contact time is laked at the surface layer. 4) In case of the same metal removal rate, the lower the table speed becomes, the higher the surface temperature is, because grinding depth has a far more influence on wheel workpiece contact zone than the table speed.
The KN-12 spent nuclear fuel (SNF) transport cask is designed for transportation of up to 12 assemblies and is in standby status for being licensed in accordance with Korea Atomic Energy Act. To evaluate radiation shielding and criticality safety of the KN-12 cask, each case of study was carried out using MCNP4B Code. MCNP code is verified by performing benchmark calculation for the KSC-4 SNF cask designed in 1989. As a result of radiation safety evaluation for the KN-12 cask, calculated dose rates always satisfied the standards at the cask surface, at 2m from the surface in normal transport condition, and at 1 m from the surface in hypothetical accident condition. Maximum dose rate was always arisen on the side of the cask. For normal transport condition, photons primarily contribute to dose rate between two kinds of released sources, neutrons and photons, from spent nuclear fuel but for hypothetical accident condition, contrary case was resulted. The level of calculated dose rate was 27.8% of the limit at the cask surface, 89.3% at 2 m from the cask surface, and 25.1% at 1 m from the cask surface. For criticality analysis, keff resulting from the criticality analysis considering the condition of optimum partial flooding with fresh water is 0.89708(0.00065. The results confirm the standards recommended by all regulations on radiation safety.

In order to improve the cutting ability of face mill, a model for optimal cutter shape was developed to minimize resultant cutting force by combing cutting force model and optimal technique. Wear test and surface roughness test for optimized and conventional cutter were performed. The new optimized cutter shows longer tool life of 2.29 times than conventional cutter in light cutting condition and 2.52 times in heavy cutting condition. The surface roughness of workpiece by optimized cutter is improved in heavy cutting condition, but deteriorated in light cutting condition in comparison with conventional cutter. The surface profiles of workpiece were analyzed by Fourier transformation. The distribution of cut lay left on workpiece by optimized cutter is more regular than that by the conventional cutter.
