An analysis of the non-homogeneous term involved in the free surface condition for second order wave diffraction on a pair of cylinders is presented. In the computations of the nonlinear loads on offshore structures, the most challenging task is the computation of the free surface integral. The main contribution to this integrand is due to the non-homogeneous term present in the free surface condition for second order scattered potential. In this paper, the free surface condition for the second order scattered potential is derived. Under the assumption of large spacing between the two cylinders, waves scattered by one cylinder may be replaced in the vicinity of the other cylinder by equivalent plane waves together with non-planner correction terms. Then solving a complex matrix equation, the first order scattered potential is derived and since the free surface term for second order scattered potential can be expressed in terms of the first order potentials, the free surface term can be obtained using the knowledge of first order potentials only.

This paper proposes a method for estimating the road surface condition and tilt angle using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to improve the safety in the use of mobility aids for the elderly. The measurements of the accelerometers of the IMU usually include the accelerations caused by not only the gravitational force but also linear and rotational motions. Thus, the gravitational accelerations are first extracted using several physical constraints and then incorporated into the Kalman filter to estimate the tilt angle. In addition, because the magnitudes of the accelerations produced by the rotational motions (roll and pitch motions) vary with the road surface condition, a criterion based on such accelerations is presented to classify the condition of the road surface. The obtained road surface condition and tilt angle are finally combined to provide the safety information (e.g., safe, warning, and danger) for the user to improve the walking safety. Experiments were carried out and the results showed that the proposed method can provide the condition of the road surface, the tilt of the road surface, and the safety information correctly.

In this paper, the transient brake time was studied on the van type vehicle with accelerometer. Experiments were carried out on the asphalt(new and polished), unpacked road(earth and gravel) and on wet or dry road conditions. The transient brake time is not effected bzy the vehicle speed. The transient brake time is about 0.41$\sim$0.43second on the asphalt road surface and the error range is within 0.1$\sim$0.16second. For the asphalt road condition, the transient brake time is not effected by both new asphalt road surface and the polished asphalt road surface. With compared by dry and wet road surface condition, the transient brake time of wet condition is longer than dry road condition and compared with unpacked road condition and packed road condition, unpacked road condition is shorter than packed road condition. It is considered that the transient brake time is effected by the road surface fraction coefficient. In other words, the transients brake time increases as friction coefficient decreases.

The quick variation of the canister wall temperature causes the modification of the shape of canister wall. This paper is the possibility of adoption and the error analysis about the transient heat flux method. The commercial code(Fluent Ver6.2.16) was employed for the calculation of surface temperature in the case of steady and unsteady heat flux condition. Based the surface temperature variation and surface material property, transient heat flux method can calculate the surface heat flux. In the case of steady heat flux condition, the error is about 2%, and in the case of unsteady heat flux condition, the error is about 3.6%. With the unsteady heat flux condition, the time which reach the maximum surface heat flux is almost same between the numerical analysis and transient heat flux method.

Micro-machining technology has been adopted for shape accuracy of micrometer and sub-micrometer scale, surface roughness of tens nanometer in industries. In micro-machining process the quality of machined surface is derived from machining condition and tooling. This paper investigates AE(acoustic emission) and cutting force signals according to machined surface quality related to machining condition. Machined surface quality was analyzed by the AE and cutting force parameter which reflect surface morphology. The characteristics of signal were extracted for process optimization by monitoring both the tool condition and the machined surface texture in micro end milling process.

This paper is concerned with the numerical investigation of the transfer characteristics of the landing impact force exerted on court sport shoes to the sport surface condition. The reaction force occurred by the impact between court sport shoes and sport surface is absorbed by shoes to some extent, but the remaining impact force is to transfer the human body from the sole of a foot. We consider four surface conditions, asphalt, urethane, clay and wood court surfaces. For the dynamic response analysis, we construct a coupled leg-shoes FEM model and create the multi-layered composite surface model. The numerical simulations are performed by an explicit nonlinear finite element method. Through the numerical experiments, we examine the transfer characteristics of the landing impact force to the surface condition.

The final polishing process is based on slurry, pad, conditioner, equipment. Therefore, the concept of wafer final polishing is also necessary for repeatability of results between polished wafers. In this study, the machining conditions have a pressure, table speed, machining time and slurry ratio. This research investigated the surface characteristics that apply variable machining conditions and response surface methodology was used to obtain more flexible and optimumal condition base on Taguchi method. On the base of estimated response surface curvature from the equation and results of Taguchi method, combined design of experiment was considered to lead to optimumal condition. Finally, polished wafer was obtained mirror like surface.

The quality of cutting surface such as surface roughness, heat affected zone, serf width can be improved by controlling the parameters of cuting process. These parameters includes cutting velocity, laser beam power, material depth and assistant gas. Thermodynamic analysis and systematical experiments are attempted to pedict and determine the optimal cutting condition. There exists the optimal cutting condition to ensure high quality surface. Under this operation, the minimum surface roughness of the mild steel, the stainless steel and the titanium becomes 3.8${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ 13${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively.

PURPOSES : This study attempts to design and establish the road surface condition detection system by using the image processing that is expected to help implement the low-cost and high-efficiency road information detection system by examining technology trends in the field of road surface condition information detection and related case studies. METHODS : Adapted visual information collecting method(setting a stereo camera outside of the vehicle) and visual information algorithm(transform a Wavelet Transform, using the K-means clustering) Experiments and Analysis on Real-road, just as four states(Dry, Wet, Snow, Ice). RESULTS : Test results showed that detection rate of 95% or more was found under the wet road surface, and the detection rate of 85% or more in snowy road surface. However, the low detection rate of 30% was found under the icy road surface. CONCLUSIONS : As a method to improve the detection rate of the mobile road surface condition information detection system developed in this study, more accurate phase analysis in the image processing process was needed. If periodic synchronization through automatic settings of the camera according to weather or ambient light was not made at the time of image acquisition, a significant change in the values of polarization coefficients occurs.
The tribological characteristics of the swash plate surface of a compressor which is for automobile were investigated. For surface treatments, PTFE and $MoS_2$ are used as a solid lubricant, together with copper alloy. Test condition is set considering actual driving condition. Wear testing is conducted using pin on disk type tester, and the coefficient of friction and the temperature on friction surface are measured. Also, to determine the wear patterns, cross-section of friction surface is analyzed by SEM(scanning electrode microscope). The $MoS_2$, both at dry and lubricated conditions, friction surface and the coefficient of friction maintained rather stable results. But, the PTFE, at oil less condition, sample resulted in rather unstable condition. In case of copper alloy, quite higher friction coefficients(higher than 0.1) were obtained at dry condition. At the temperature of $125^{\circ}C$, seizure has occurred.
