In order to create humanitarian living environment with sustainable ecological environment, urban regeneration project has been implemented recently seeking diverse methods for residents'participation stressing the process of communication with the residents changing from the existing one way planning by limited number of experts. Particularly, it is essential to develop systematic tools to promote the voluntary and positive participation of the residents because residents have to perform as the master of urban streetscape design project that requires sophisticated knowledge and experience and also because the residents have to function as sustainable maintainers and managers of their streetscape. This study intends to identify the organizational structure and major contents of design guideline as a tool to support the voluntary and positive participation of the residents in streetscape maintenance. For this purpose based on the structural system and characteristics of Chicago streetscape design guideline that was developed as tool for residents' participation, efforts were made to set up framework of design guideline for sustainable streetscape project with the users' participation with their overall understanding and trust. In detail, the author studied the resident participatory process for sustainable maintenance and management in a long term landscape project and the principle and theories of design planning for streetscape that supports the utilizing behaviors of the users, and how this information should be linked and organized to form the structure and contents of design guideline. As a tool supporting residents' participation and helping the residents perform the responsible function as sustainable maintainers and managers of their streetscape through social maturity with ontological sense of masters of their local community as they experience the gradual processes of their streetscape maintenance project, streetscape design guideline has its meaning in the efforts that tried to achieve deep participation of the residents through researches converging the two academic sectors of urban architecture and social psychology.

As software technology has made progress, object-oriented CASE tools have become more important. This paper presents the process and similarity in design and implementation of OODesigner, an object-oriented CASE tool, on three platfonns and outlines a kind of generic architecture for the design and the implementation of CASE tools. OODesigner is a tool that was initially developed to support OMT. An initial Unix version has been developed since 1994. In 1997, after the completion of the Unix version, we began developing a Java version and a Windows version supporting UML. The development of a CASE tool is a typical application of the Model-View-ControllerO'vIVC) paradigm. Thus, we obtained a common design pattern among the versions in the MVC point of views. This design similarity can be used to develop several kinds of CASE tools with the corresponding design notations.

In spoken language research, transcription process needs to be carried out to translate voice data into text. Transcription tool, support program of transcription, offers various information such as content and time of utterance and speaker information. For this reason, inexperienced computer users are having trouble familiarizing with the program. Moreover, since there are little transcription tools developed domestically in Korea, they are usually not suitable for Korean environment. In this paper, we propose a transcription tool which supports not only Korean transcription but easy-to-use interface environment for novice. The transcription supporting function is also provided to minimize mistake that might happen in the process of transcription. And a system structure will be provided for data reliability. Usability of the proposed tool is evaluated in accordance with transcription experience. The evaluation result shows that transcription process and transcription support function have become faster and more convenient respectively.

Emerging of wireless sensor networks results in several modeling and design issues on the network simulations. In previous works, most researchers have used three evaluation approaches such as analysis method, computer simulation and real test-bed measurement in order to verify the performance of wireless sensor networks. Among these approaches, analysis method is widely used since the other approaches have significant drawbacks such as limitation of network power, computational problem of distribute processing and complication of debugging process. However, the analysis method also shows poor performance when it deals with complex operations in huge wireless sensor networks. Thus, in this paper, we design and develop SMAC and AODV protocols by using Ptolemy tool in order to improve the simulation performance. The developed Ptolemy actor can be easily adapted to compare and evaluate the various protocols for wireless sensor networks.

Background: We described a novel multi-step retinal fundus image reading system for providing high-quality large data for machine learning algorithms, and assessed the grader variability in the large-scale dataset generated with this system. Methods: A 5-step retinal fundus image reading tool was developed that rates image quality, presence of abnormality, findings with location information, diagnoses, and clinical significance. Each image was evaluated by 3 different graders. Agreements among graders for each decision were evaluated. Results: The 234,242 readings of 79,458 images were collected from 55 licensed ophthalmologists during 6 months. The 34,364 images were graded as abnormal by at-least one rater. Of these, all three raters agreed in 46.6% in abnormality, while 69.9% of the images were rated as abnormal by two or more raters. Agreement rate of at-least two raters on a certain finding was 26.7%-65.2%, and complete agreement rate of all-three raters was 5.7%-43.3%. As for diagnoses, agreement of at-least two raters was 35.6%-65.6%, and complete agreement rate was 11.0%-40.0%. Agreement of findings and diagnoses were higher when restricted to images with prior complete agreement on abnormality. Retinal/glaucoma specialists showed higher agreements on findings and diagnoses of their corresponding subspecialties. Conclusion: This novel reading tool for retinal fundus images generated a large-scale dataset with high level of information, which can be utilized in future development of machine learning-based algorithms for automated identification of abnormal conditions and clinical decision supporting system. These results emphasize the importance of addressing grader variability in algorithm developments.

This descriptive study examined the practical nursing guidelines for the prevention of pressure injuries (PI) in operating rooms and their application. Method: Four general hospitals and three specialized hospitals located in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggido province were selected through an online randomization program and nurses at these hospitals who participated in operations and had at least six months work experience were surveyed. Data were collected from January to April 2018 through a survey distributed to 150 nurses, 129 of whom returned the survey (86% recovery rate). The results showed that 43 nurses provided PI prevention care for patients in a lateral position (33.3%), 37 for patients in a supine position (28.7%), and 36 for patients in a prone position (27.9%). Gel was most widely used as the supporting surface material (102 nurses; 79.1%), followed by sponge (62 nurses; 48.1%), and cotton (47 nurses; 36.4%). Skin was often inspected twice, before and after the use of a supporting surface (90nurses; 69.8%), but no designated tool was used to determine the risk of PI developing (76 nurses; 58.9%). Additionally, the patient's position during surgery (83 nurses; 64.3%) and the length of the operation (i.e., more than two hours, in this case) (49 nurses; 38.0%) were determining factors for whether to use a supporting surface. The operating room nurses used the gel, sponge, and cotton as the supporting surfaces for the prevention of PI and confirmed that the cutoff operation time for the use of a supporting surface was more than 2 hours.

A visual analysis approach and the developed supporting technology provide a comprehensive solution for analyzing large and complex integrated genomic and biomedical data. This paper presents a methodology that is implemented as an interactive visual analysis technology for extracting knowledge from complex genetic and clinical data and then visualizing it in a meaningful and interpretable way. By synergizing the domain knowledge into development and analysis processes, we have developed a comprehensive tool that supports a seamless patient-to-patient analysis, from an overview of the patient population in the similarity space to the detailed views of genes. The system consists of multiple components enabling the complete analysis process, including data mining, interactive visualization, analytical views, and gene comparison. We demonstrate our approach with medical scientists on a case study of childhood cancer patients on how they use the tool to confirm existing hypotheses and to discover new scientific insights.

Government R&D Project Management in Korea has had considerable difficulties because of the lack of project monitoring systems and insufficient communication. The National Program for Tera-level Nanodevices (TND Program) is a ten-year R&D program for commercialization in the area of nano technology. Collaboration and communication among the various participants such as business companies, universities, and government R&D institutes are key success factors in this R&D program. TND Program office has developed a Web-based project management system. This system consists of mostly four sub-management functions: (1) Milestones management of all R&D projects; (2) DR (Design Review) management as the mechanism for checking the performance against milestones; (3) Project activity management using the WBS (Work Breakdown Structure); (4) Budget management. Additionally, it also has many R&D supporting functions such as technology information bulletin board, community management, and visual summary of project progress and performance. This system is effective for monitoring research project as well as measuring project performance of the overall research program. This Web-based system has become the useful tool of R&D moving target mechanism and effective communication and collaboration tool. System features and adoption process of the system are also suggested.

Ball and roller bearings are commonly used machine elements for supporting rotating motion about shafts in simple devices including bicycles, in-line skates, and electric motors, as well as in complex machines. Heat is generated by the friction in the bearings, which causes the temperature inside the bearing to increase. If the heat is not appropriately removed from the bearing, elevated temperatures may give rise to premature failure. It is, therefore, important to be able to calculate the temperature in the bearings due to friction. Here, we describe a method to estimate the frictional torque in bearings using an empirical formula developed using a method based on bearing analysis tool and the measured frictional torque in a spindle system. Thermal analysis of the spindle system including the bearings was achieved using the finite element method (FEM), and the bearing temperature was compared with measured data to verify the empirical formula.
