Solvolyses of 3,4-dimethoxybenzenesulfonyl chloride (DSC) in water, D2O, CH3OD, and in aqueous binary mixtures of acetone, acetonitrile, 1,4-dioxane, ethanol, methanol, and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) have been investigated at 25.0 oC. Kinetic solvent isotope effects (KSIE) in water and in methanol and product selectivities in alcohol-water mixtures are also reported. The Grunwald-Winstein plot of first-order rate constants for the solvolyic reaction of DSC with YCl shows marked dispersions into separated lines for various aqueous mixtures. With use of the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, the l and m values obtained are 1.12 and 0.58 respectively for the solvolyses of DSC. The relatively large magnitude of l is consistent with substantial nucleophilic solvent assistance. From Grunwald-Winstein plots the rate data are dissected approximately into contributions from two competing reaction channels. This interpretation is supported for alcohol-water mixtures by the trends of product selectivities, which show a maximum for ethanol-water mixtures. From the KSIE of 1.45 in methanol, it is proposed that the reaction channel favored in methanolwater mixtures and in all less polar media is general-base catalysed and/or is possibly (but less likely) an addition-elimination pathway. Also, the KISE value of 1.35 for DSC in water is expected for SN2-SN1 processes, with minimal general base catalysis, and this mechanism is proposed for solvolyses in the most polar media.

Polymer-supported crown ethers (Ps-CE) which can be used for phase-transfer catalyst (PTC) were synthesized for the purpose of allowing reusable function to ordinary crown ethers, and the kinetics of the liquid-solid-liquid triphase-catalyzed nucleophilic displacement reaction of iodide (aqueous phase) on 1-bromooctane (organic phase) using synthesized Ps-CE (solid) were studied. Ps-CE were obtained by grafting of hydroxymethyl crown ethers to 1~2% cross-linked chloromethylated polystyrene. All reactions followed a pseudo-first order dependency on the 1-bromooctane concentration and the observed rate constants $(k_{obsd})$ were linearly related to the molar equivalents of Ps-CE, and were subjected to the influence of cross-linking density of polymer backbone, solvent and the reaction temperature. The catalytic activity of Ps-CE was also compared with that of structurally similar soluble crown ethers, and used Ps-CE were easily recovered after the reaction by simple filtration and could be reused without loss of catalytic activity in the same anionic displacement reaction. Enthalpies and entropies of activation associated with the displacement were 10~20kcal $mol^{-1}, 20~55eu. respectively, and the free energy of activation was ~30kcal mol^{-1}$.
We have investigated the infrared spectra for CO adsorbed on silica supported nickel(Ni-Si$O_2$), silica supported copper(Cu-Si$O_2$), silica supported nickel-copper alloys(Ni/Cu-Si$O_2$) of several compositions with varying CO pressures(0.2 $torr{\sim}$50 torr) at room temperature and on pumping to vacumn at room temperature within the frequency range of 1500 $cm^{-1}{\sim}2500\;cm^{-1}$. Four bands(2059.6 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$2036.5 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$ 1868.7 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$ 1697.1 $cm^{-1}$) were observed for Ni-Si$O_2$, two bands($\sim$2115.5 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$1743.0 $cm^{-1}$) were observed for Cu-Si$O_2$ and five bands(${\sim}2123.2\;cm^{-1}$, 2059.6 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$2036.4 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$1899.5 $cm^{-1},\;{\sim}$1697.1 $cm^{-1}$) were observed for Ni/Cu-Si$O_2$. These absorption bands correspond with those of the previous reports approximately. The bands below 1800 $cm^{-1}$ were only observed with Ni metal or Ni/Cu alloy crystal plane containing step at room temperature and the ${\sim}1697.1\;cm^{-1}$ bands observed with Ni-Si$O_2$ and Ni/Cu-Si$O_2$ may be ascribed to CO molecule adsorbed on the adsorption sites near step. The bands below 2000 $cm^{-1}$ were rarely observed with Cu metal crystal plane at room temperature and the 1743.0 $cm^{-1}$ bands may be ascribed to CO molecule adsorbed on the adsorption sites near step. The band shifts of adsorbed CO with varing Cu contents from 0 to 0.5 mole fraction at the same CO pressure or at the same pumping time to vacumn were below 21 $cm^{-1}$. and comparatively small than those with other ⅠB metal addition. It may means ligand effect of Cu d electron is small.

This review article highlights different types of nano-sized catalysts for the selective alcohol oxidation to form aldehydes (or ketones) with supported or immobilized metal nanoparticles. Metal nanoparticle catalysts are obtained through dispersing metal nanoparticles over a solid support with a large surface area. The nanocatalysts have wide technological applications to industrial and academic fields such as organic synthesis, fuel cells, biodiesel production, oil cracking, energy conversion and storage, medicine, water treatment, solid rocket propellants, chemicals and dyes. One of main reactions for the nanocatalyst is an aerobic oxidation of alcohols to produce important intermediates for various applications. The oxidation of alcohols by supported nanocatalysts including gold, palladium, ruthenium, and vanadium is very economical, green and environmentally benign reaction leading to decrease byproducts and reduce the cost of reagents as opposed to stoichiometric reactions. In addition, the room temperature alcohol oxidation using nanocatalysts is introduced.
Heterogeneous metallocene catalysts supported on montmorillonite (MMT), [$Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MMT, $Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MAO/MMT, and $Cp_2ZrCl_2$ + MAO/MMT], were prepared with three different methods of immobilization and tested for ethylene polymerization. The heterogeneous catalysts immobilized on organo clay (30B-MMT) showed the higher metal loading and polymerization activity than those immobilized on natural clay $Na^+-MMT$. These results suggest that the hydroxyl groups of organo clay interlayers react with the MAO and catalyst through the chemical bond. The metallocene catalyst supported directly on MMT showed lower activity for ethylene polymerization compared to the homogeneous systems, while MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$, catalysts treated with MAO before impregnation, showed a higher activity. The polymers obtained from MMT-supported catalysts have higher melting point, molecular weight and molecular weight distributions than those of homogeneous catalysts. The polymer particles with increasing significant size. Ethylene polymerization over 30B-MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst was also performed varying the process variables to optimize the process conditions.
The binding properties and sequence selectivities of ${\Delta}{\Delta}$- and ${\Lambda}{\Lambda}-[{\mu}-Ru_2(phen)_4(bip)]^{4+}$ (bip = 4,4'-biphenylene (imidazo [4,4-f][1,10]phenanthroline) complexes with $poly[d(A-T)_2]$ and $poly[d(G-C)_2]$ were investigated using conventional spectroscopic methods. When bound to $poly[d(A-T)_2]$, a large positive circular dichroism (CD) spectrum was induced in absorption region of the bridging moiety for both the ${\Delta}{\Delta}$- and ${\Lambda}{\Lambda}-[{\mu}-Ru_2(phen)_4(bip)]^{4+}$ complexes, which suggested that the bridging moiety sits in the minor groove of the polynucleotide. As luminescence intensity increased, decay times became longer and complexes were well-protected from the negatively charged iodide quencher compared to that in the absence of $poly[d(A-T)_2]$. These luminescence measurements indicated that Ru(II) enantiomers were in a less polar environment compared to that in water and supported by minor groove binding. An angle of $45^{\circ}$ between the molecular plane of the bridging moiety of the ${\Delta}{\Delta}-[{\mu}-Ru_2(phen)_4(bip)]^{4+}$ complex and the local DNA helix axis calculated from reduced linear dichroism ($LD^r$) spectrum further supported the minor groove binding mode. In the case of ${\Lambda}{\Lambda}-[{\mu}-Ru_2(phen)_4(bip)]^{4+}$ complex, this angle was $55^{\circ}$, suggesting a tilt of DNA stem near the binding site and bridging moiety sit in the minor groove of the $poly[d(A-T)_2]$. In contrast, neither ${\Delta}{\Delta}$-nor ${\Lambda}{\Lambda}-[{\mu}-Ru_2(phen)_4(bip)]^{4+}$ complex produced significant CD or $LD^r$ signal in the absorption region of the bridging moiety. Luminescence measurements revealed that both the ${\Delta}{\Delta}$- and ${\Lambda}{\Lambda}-[{\mu}-Ru_2(phen)_4(bip)]^{4+}$ complexes were partially accessible to the $I^-$ quencher. Furthermore, decay times became shorter when bis-Ru(II) complexes bound to $poly[d(G-C)_2]$. These observations suggest that both the ${\Delta}{\Delta}$- and ${\Lambda}{\Lambda}-[{\mu}-Ru_2(phen)_4(bip)]^{4+}$ complexes bind at the surface of $poly[d(G-C)_2]$, probably electrostatically to phosphate group. The results indicate that ${\Delta}{\Delta}$- and ${\Lambda}{\Lambda}-[{\mu}-Ru_2(phen)_4(bip)]^{4+}$ are able to discriminate between AT and GC base pairs.
Electrochemical studies on charge transfer reactions across the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES) have greatly attracted researcher's attentions due to their wide applicability in research fields such as ion sensing and biosensing, modeling of biomembranes, pharmacokinetics, phase-transfer catalysis, fuel generation and solar energy conversion. In particular, there have been extensive efforts made on developing sensing platforms for ionic species and biomolecules via gelifying one of the liquid phases to improve mechanical stability in addition to creating microscale interfaces to reduce ohmic loss. In this review, we will mainly discuss on the basic principles, applications and future aspects of various sensing platforms utilizing ion transfer reactions across the ITIES. The ITIES is classified into four types : (i) a conventional liquid/liquid interface, (ii) a micropipette supported liquid/liquid interface, (iii) a single microhole or an array of microholes supported liquid/ liquid interface on a thin polymer film, and (iv) a microhole array liquid/liquid interface on a silicon membrane. Research efforts on developing ion selective sensors for water pollutants as well as biomolecule sensors will be highlighted based on the use of direct and assisted ion transfer reactions across these different ITIES configurations.
Coumarin and its derivatives occur widely in nature. Many attempts were made for synthesis of various coumarin derivatives because of their interesting biological activities. In this study, solid phase synthetic approach of 3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)coumarin was achieved for combinatorial synthesis of substituted 3-phenylcoumarin analogues. Starting from 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid methyl ester, release of 3-(4-hydroxypnehyl)coumarin from polymer support was accom-plished.
The anticorrosive effect of 3-Hydroxyflavone (3HF) in combination with quarternary ammonium bromide and iodide salts (QAB and QAI) for aluminium corrosion in NaOH medium was studied at the temperature range of 303K-323K using weight loss study, potentiodynamic polarization study and impedance spectroscopic measurements. The results revealed that the inhibition efficiency increases with the inhibitor concentration and it further increases on the addition of quarternary ammonium bromide and iodide salts. The enhanced inhibition efficiency of the inhibitor in the presence of quarternary ammonium salts may be due to synergistic effect. The adsorption process of 3HF on the aluminium surface obeys Langmuir's adsorption isotherm. The mechanism of adsorption is further supported by Scanning Electron Microscopic study (SEM).
