  • In this paper, knowledge-based approach using Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are used for estimating the coordinated zonal settings of a distance relay. The approach depends on the detailed simulation studies of apparent impedance loci as seen by distance relay during disturbance, considering various operating conditions including fault resistance. In a distance relay, the impedance loci given at the relay location is obtained from extensive transient stability studies. SVMs are used as a pattern classifier for obtaining distance relay co-ordination. The scheme utilizes the apparent impedance values observed during a fault as inputs. An improved performance with the use of SVMs, keeping the reach when faced with different fault conditions as well as system power flow changes, are illustrated with an equivalent 265 bus system of a practical Indian Western Grid.

  • Object detection is a fundamental task for many high-level computer vision applications such as image retrieval, scene understanding, activity recognition, visual surveillance and many others. Although object detection is one of the most popular problems in computer vision and various algorithms have been proposed thus far, it is also notoriously difficult, mainly due to lack of proper models for object representation, that handle large variations of object structure and appearance. In this article, we review a branch of object detection algorithms based on Support Vector Machines (SVMs), a well-known max-margin technique to minimize classification error. We introduce a few variations of SVMs-Structural SVMs and Latent SVMs-and discuss their applications to object detection and localization.

  • Support vector machines in biped humanoid robot are presented in this paper. The trajectory of the ZMP in biped walking robot poses an important criterion for the balance of the walking robots but complex dynamics involved make robot control difficult. We are establishing empirical relationships based on the dynamic stability of motion using SVMs. SVMs and kernel method have become very popular method for learning from examples. We applied SVM to model the practical humanoid robot. Three kinds of kernels are employed also and each result has been compared. As a result, SVM based on kernel method have been found to work well. Especially SVM with RBF kernel function provides the best results. The simulation results show that the generated ZMP from the SVM can be improve the stability of the biped walking robot and it can be effectively used to model and control practical biped walking robot.

  • This paper describes a classical algorithm carrying out dynamic 3D obstacle recognition for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), Support Vector Machines (SVMs). SVM is an efficient algorithm that was developed for recognizing 3D object in recent years. A recognition system is designed using Support Vector Machines for applying the capabilities on appearance-based 3D obstacle recognition. All of the test data are taken from OpenGL Simulation. The OpenGL which draws dynamic obstacles environment is used to carry out the experiment for the situation of three-dimension. In order to verify the performance of proposed SVMs, it compares with Back-Propagation algorithm through OpenGL simulation in view of the obstacle recognition accuracy and the time efficiency.

  • Fast incipient fault diagnosis is becoming one of the key requirements for economical and optimal process operation management in high-tech industries. Artificial neural networks have been used to detect faults for a number of years and shown to be highly successful in this application area. This paper presents a novel test technique for fault detection and classification for module process of TFT-LCD manufacture using support vector machines (SVMs). In order to evaluate SVMs, this paper examines the performance of the proposed method by comparing it with that of multilayer perception, one of the artificial neural network techniques, based on real benchmarking data.

  • Currently, microarray gene expression data take advantage of the sufficient classification of cancers, which addresses the problems relating to cancer causes and treatment regimens. However, the sample size of gene expression data is often restricted, because the price of microarray technology on studies in humans is high. We propose enhancing the gene expression classification of support vector machines with generative adversarial networks (GAN-SVMs). A GAN that generates new data from original training datasets was implemented. The GAN was used in conjunction with nonlinear SVMs that efficiently classify gene expression data. Numerical test results on 20 low-sample-size and very high-dimensional microarray gene expression datasets from the Kent Ridge Biomedical and Array Expression repositories indicate that the model is more accurate than state-of-the-art classifying models.

  • The objective of this study is to apply a hybrid model for estimating solar radiation and investigate their accuracy. A hybrid model is wavelet-based support vector machines (WSVMs). Wavelet decomposition is employed to decompose the solar radiation time series into approximation and detail components. These decomposed time series are then used as inputs of support vector machines (SVMs) modules in the WSVMs model. Results obtained indicate that WSVMs can successfully be used for the estimation of daily global solar radiation at Champaign and Springfield stations in Illinois.

  • In this paper, we study the problem of domain adaptation for structural support vector machines (SVMs). We consider a number of domain adaptation approaches for structural SVMs and evaluate them on named entity recognition, part-of-speech tagging, and sentiment classification problems. Finally, we show that a prior model for structural SVMs outperforms other domain adaptation approaches in most cases. Moreover, the training time for this prior model is reduced compared to other domain adaptation methods with improvements in performance.

  • Conventional support vector machines (SVMs) find optimal hyperplanes that have maximal margins by treating all data equivalently. In the real world, however, the data within a data set may differ in degree of uncertainty or importance due to noise, inaccuracies or missing values in the data. Hence, if all data are treated as equivalent, without considering such differences, the optimal hyperplanes identified are likely to be less optimal. In this paper, to more accurately identify the optimal hyperplane in a given uncertain data set, we propose a membership-induced distance from a hyperplane using membership values, and formulate three kinds of membership-induced SVMs.

  • Performance of next generation susceptor is affected by temperature uniformity in order to produce reliably large-sized flat panel display. In this paper, we propose a learning estimation model of susceptor to predict and appropriately assess the temperature uniformity. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are compared for the suitability of the learning estimation model. It is proved that SVMs provides more suitable verification of uniformity modeling than ANNs during each stage of temperature variations. Practical procedure for uniformity estimation of susceptor temperature was developed using the SVMs prediction algorithm.
