The objectives of this study were to evaluate the air quality surrounding an indoor swimming pool, to estimate the cancer risk based on the airborne exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs), and to examine the ventilation efficiency by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Chlorine and THMs were measured poolside, and in the staff room and reception area. The indoor swimming pool was modeled using the Airpak program, with ventilation drawings and actual survey data. Temperature, flow and mean age of the air were analyzed. Levels of chlorine poolside, and in the staff room, and reception area were $203\;{\mu}g/m^3$, $5\;{\mu}g/m^3$, and $10\;{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. Chloroform was the dominant THM in all sampling sites and mean concentrations were $16.30\;{\mu}g/m^3$, $0.51\;{\mu}g/m^3$, and $0.06\;{\mu}g/m^3$ poolside, in the staff room and reception area, respectively. Bromodichloromethane and Dibromochloromethane levels were respectively estimated as $10.3\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $1.7\;{\mu}g/m^3$ poolside, $1.3\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $0.1\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in the staff room, and were not detected in the reception area. The cancer risks from inhalation exposure to THMs were estimated between $3.37{\times}10^{-7}$ and $1.84{\times}10^{-5}$. A short circulation phenomenon was observed from the supply air vents to the exhaust air vents located in the ceiling. A high temperature layer was formed within one meter of the ceiling, and a low temperature layer was formed under this layer due to the low velocity and high temperature of the supply air, and the improper locations of the supply air vents and exhaust air vents. The stagnation was evident at the above adult pool and the mean age of the air was 22 minutes. Disinfection by-products in the indoor swimming pool were present in higher concentrations than in the outdoor air. In order to increase the removal of pollutants, adjustment was required of the supply air volume and the supply/exhaust position.

In this study, we developed a heat supply control algorithm that minimizes the heat loss in the heat distribution pipelines used for supplying heat energy to shared group housing. Controlling the temperature and flow rate of the hot water supplied to the heat exchanger for shared group housing enables us to develop a heat supply control technique that meets the heating load required by each household in a shared apartment building in accordance with changes in the outdoor air temperature, and that minimizes the heat loss occurring in the heat distribution pipeline. A one-year study in 2008 on a 1,473-household D-apartment building in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, compared the heat capacity used by each household, as well as the heat capacity supplied to the heat exchanger room of the apartment housing building, to calculate the amount of heat loss in the heat distribution pipeline. The results confirmed that 24.1% of the heat supplied was lost in the piping.

Ventilation of the marine engine room is very important for the health of the workers as well as the nomal operation of machines. To find proper ventilation conditions of this engine room, numerical simulation with standard k-.epsilon. model was carried out. In the present study, the marine engine room is considered as a closed space with a heat source and forced ventilation ducts. The injection angle of air supply is found to be important. Injection with downword angle depresses recirculation flow, causing a strong steam in the wider space of the room. Ventilation and removal of the released heat are promoted with this pattern. There is a possibility of local extreme heating at the upper surface of engine when supply and exhaust ports of air are in bilateral symmetry. The effect of the increase of exhaust port area on ventilation decreases as the number of supply port increases.

Various thermostatic valves have been used widely in Korea for conservation of heating energy and enhancement of thermal comfort in residential buildings. But heating control performances of thermostatic valves extensively vary with the design and operational conditions of the heating system, climate condition and others. An experimental method was carried out in this study to analyze heating control characteristics by temperature sensing methods of thermostatic valves for various parameters, such as supply temperatures and flow rate of hot water, the position of room thermostats and outdoor air temperatures. As a result, the heat flow rate per day of S-Valve($34^{\circ}C$-Type) of water temperature sensing method was liked that of C-Valve of indoor air temperature sensing method with stage 3.3 of room thermostat in case supply temperature of hot water was $45^{\circ}C$, flow rate was 1.3 L/min and outdoor air temperature was $7.8^{\circ}C$.

The operational conditions such as cooling tower water pump flow rate, cooling tower fan flow rate, and chiller capacity in heat source equipment, and supply air temperature and chilled water temperature in air conditioner are considered to study the effects on energy consumption for central cooling system by using TRNSYS program. As a result, the optimal values of supply air temperature and chilled water temperature for minimal total energy consumption are 12℃ and 8℃. And if maximum values of cooling tower water pump and fan flow rate is decreased from 100% to 40%, energy consumptions are increased 170MJ/day and 63.2MJ/day, respectively.

The present study concerns an experiment on the supply-air control in variable air volume (VAV) system with a Pl control logic. A thermal chamber with a Pl control logic is constructed to verify the previously suggested multi-zone model. The stratified thermal model is adopted in the control logic for a thermal chamber cooling test. The effects of taler- mal parameters and control parameters such as supply air temperature and Pl control factor are investigated by implementing the thermal chamber cooling test. The experimental results obtained show that the transient behavior of the air-conditioned space temperature are in good agreement with the simulation results of the stratified thermal model.

The vortex tube is a simple device for separating a compressed gaseous fluid stream into two flows of high and low temperature without any chemical reactions. Recently, vortex tube is widely used to local cooler of industrial equipments and air supply system. The phenomena of energy separation through the vortex tube was investigated experimentally. This study is focused on the effect of the diameter of cold end orifice diameter on the energy separation. The experiment was carried out with various cold end orifice diameter ratio from 0.22 to 0.78 for different input pressure and cold air flow ratio. The experimental results were indicated that there are an optimum diameter of cold end orifice for the best cooling performance. The maximum cold air temperature difference was appeared when the diameter ratio of the cold end orifice was 0.5. The maximum cooling capacity was obtained when the diameter ratio of the cold end orifice was 0.6 and cold air flow ratio was 0.7.

This study considers indoor thermal comfort in an ondol space by supply vent configurations to prevent cold draft in winter. A specially-designed vent cap has been investigated in comparison with a round pan-type vent and a simple opening without a cap. Numerical simulations have been conducted using CFD to analyze thermal comfort indices such as Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and Effective Draft Temperature (EDT) as well as air distribution index i.e. Air Diffusion Performance Index (ADPI). Results show the new vent cap provides improved thermal comfort conditions especially near ondol heated floor, as the cold outdoor air spreads upwards along the vertical wall before reaching occupant region near floor. This paper includes discussions on the flow and comfort distributions created by the thermal jets from the vents.

The vortex tube is a simple device which splits a compressed gas stream into a cold stream and a hot stream without any chemical reactions. Recently, vortex tube is widely used to local cooler of industrial equipments and air supply system. In this study, the insulation effect of surface on the efficiency of vortex tube was performed experimentally. The experiment is carried out for nozzle area ratio of 0.194, diameter ratio of cold end orifice of 0.6 and input pressure ranging from 0.2Mpa to 0.5Mpa. The purpose of this study is focused on the effect of surface insulation of vortex tube with the variation of cold air mass flow ratio. The results indicate that the temperature difference of cold and hot air are higher about 12% and 30% than that of not insulated vortex tube respectively. Furthermore, for the insulated vortex tube, the similarity relation for the prediction of cold end temperature as the function of cold air mass flow ratio and input pressure is obtained.

Vertical open display cabinets are widely used in shopping mall, supermarkets, retail stores. Maintaining the temperature of foods in the display cabinet is vitally important to retailers to ensure optimal food quality and safety. The purpose of this study is to reduce the infiltration of air and heat loss from ambient space to display cabinet. The three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulation is used for the analysis of air flow patterns and temperature distribution in refrigerated display cabinets. Under several operating conditions which vary both the inner and outer jet velocities in the range from 0.3 to 1.1 m/s, simulations were carried out. This paper presents a performance of display cabinets with single jet and double jet. The energy consumption due to thermal entrainment ratio is plotted with varying Re. It was found that the double jet system is better than single jet system in terms of temperature distribution and energy saving.
