Most deep learning (DL) approaches for bridge damage localization based on a structural health monitoring system commonly use supervised learning-based DL models. The supervised learning-based DL model requires the response data obtained from sensors on the bridge and also the label which indicates the damaged state of the bridge. However, it is impractical to accurately obtain the label data in fields, thus, the supervised learning-based DL model has a limitation in that it is not easily applicable in practice. On the other hand, an unsupervised learning-based DL model has the merit of being able to train without label data. Considering this advantage, this study aims to propose and theoretically validate a damage localization approach for bridges using a variational autoencoder, a representative unsupervised learning-based DL network: as a result, this study indicated the feasibility of VAE for damage localization.
Recently, with the development of deep learning technology, researches to apply a deep learning algorithm to analyze unstructured data such as text and images are being actively conducted. Text classification has been studied for a long time in academia and industry, and various attempts are being performed to utilize data characteristics to improve classification performance. In particular, a hierarchical relationship of labels has been utilized for hierarchical classification. However, the top-down approach mainly used for hierarchical classification has a limitation that misclassification at a higher level blocks the opportunity for correct classification at a lower level. Therefore, in this study, we propose a methodology for classifying hierarchical data using the autoencoder-based deeply supervised network that high-level classification does not block the low-level classification while considering the hierarchical relationship of labels. The proposed methodology adds a main classifier that predicts a low-level label to the autoencoder's latent variable and an auxiliary classifier that predicts a high-level label to the hidden layer of the autoencoder. As a result of experiments on 22,512 academic papers to evaluate the performance of the proposed methodology, it was confirmed that the proposed model showed superior classification accuracy and F1-score compared to the traditional supervised autoencoder and DNN model.
Due to the increase in energy consumption, and eco-friendly policies, there is a need for efficient energy consumption in buildings. Anomaly power detection based on deep learning are being used. Because of the difficulty in collecting anomaly data, anomaly detection is performed using reconstruction error with a Recurrent Neural Network(RNN) based autoencoder. However, there are some limitations such as the long time required to fully learn temporal features and its sensitivity to noise in the train data. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes the TCN-USAD, combined with Temporal Convolution Network(TCN) and UnSupervised Anomaly Detection for multivariate data(USAD). The proposed model using TCN-based autoencoder and the USAD structure, which uses two decoders and adversarial training, to quickly learn temporal features and enable robust anomaly detection. To validate the performance of TCN-USAD, comparative experiments were performed using two building energy datasets. The results showed that the TCN-based autoencoder can perform faster and better reconstruction than RNN-based autoencoder. Furthermore, TCN-USAD achieved 20% improved F1-Score over other anomaly detection models, demonstrating excellent anomaly detection performance.

Semi-supervised learning (SSL) and few-shot learning (FSL) have shown impressive performance even then the volume of labeled data is very limited. However, SSL and FSL can encounter a significant performance degradation if the diversity gap between the labeled and unlabeled data is high. To reduce this diversity gap, we propose a novel scheme that relies on an autoencoder for generating pseudo examples. Specifically, the autoencoder is trained on a specific class using the available labeled data and the decoder of the trained autoencoder is then used to generate N samples of that specific class based on N random noise, sampled from a standard normal distribution. The above process is repeated for all the classes. Consequently, the generated data reduces the diversity gap and enhances the model performance. Extensive experiments on MNIST and FashionMNIST datasets for SSL and FSL verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of classification accuracy and robustness against adversarial attacks.

The deployment of sensors for Structural Health Monitoring requires a complicated network arrangement, ground truthing, and calibration for validating sensor performance periodically. Any conventional sensor on a structural element is also subjected to static and dynamic vertical loadings in conjunction with other environmental factors, such as brightness, noise, temperature, and humidity. A structural model with strain gauges was built and tested to get realistic sensory information. This paper investigates different deep learning architectures and algorithms, including unsupervised, autoencoder, and supervised methods, to benchmark blind drift calibration methods using deep learning. It involves a fully connected neural network (FCNN), a long short-term memory (LSTM), and a gated recurrent unit (GRU) to address the blind drift calibration problem (i.e., performing calibrations of installed sensors when ground truth is not available). The results show that the supervised methods perform much better than unsupervised methods, such as an autoencoder, when ground truths are available. Furthermore, taking advantage of time-series information, the GRU model generates the most precise predictions to remove the drift overall.

In this study, we present a system for identifying equivalent grades of standardized wire rod steel based on alloy composition using machine learning techniques. The system comprises two models, one based on a supervised multi-class classification algorithm and the other based on unsupervised autoencoder algorithm. Our evaluation showed that the supervised model exhibited superior performance in terms of prediction stability and reliability of prediction results. This system provides a useful tool for non-experts seeking similar grades of steel based on alloy composition.
With the development of network technologies, the security to protect organizational resources from internal and external intrusions and threats becomes more important. Therefore in recent years, the anomaly detection algorithm that detects and prevents security threats with respect to various security log events has been actively studied. Security anomaly detection algorithms that have been developed based on rule-based or statistical learning in the past are gradually evolving into modeling based on machine learning and deep learning. In this study, we propose a deep-autoencoder model that transforms LSTM-autoencoder as an optimal algorithm to detect insider threats in advance using various machine learning analysis methodologies. This study has academic significance in that it improved the possibility of adaptive security through the development of an anomaly detection algorithm based on unsupervised learning, and reduced the false positive rate compared to the existing algorithm through supervised true positive labeling.

As advanced cyber threats continue to increase in recent years, it is difficult to detect new types of cyber attacks with existing pattern or signature-based intrusion detection method. Therefore, research on anomaly detection methods using data learning-based artificial intelligence technology is increasing. In addition, supervised learning-based anomaly detection methods are difficult to use in real environments because they require sufficient labeled data for learning. Research on an unsupervised learning-based method that learns from normal data and detects an anomaly by finding a pattern in the data itself has been actively conducted. Therefore, this study aims to extract a latent vector that preserves useful sequence information from sequence log data and develop an anomaly detection learning model using the extracted latent vector. Word2Vec was used to create a dense vector representation corresponding to the characteristics of each sequence, and an unsupervised autoencoder was developed to extract latent vectors from sequence data expressed as dense vectors. The developed autoencoder model is a recurrent neural network GRU (Gated Recurrent Unit) based denoising autoencoder suitable for sequence data, a one-dimensional convolutional neural network-based autoencoder to solve the limited short-term memory problem that GRU can have, and an autoencoder combining GRU and one-dimensional convolution was used. The data used in the experiment is time-series-based NGIDS (Next Generation IDS Dataset) data, and as a result of the experiment, an autoencoder that combines GRU and one-dimensional convolution is better than a model using a GRU-based autoencoder or a one-dimensional convolution-based autoencoder. It was efficient in terms of learning time for extracting useful latent patterns from training data, and showed stable performance with smaller fluctuations in anomaly detection performance.
Multi-view learning considers data from various viewpoints as well as attempts to integrate various information from data. Multi-view learning has been studied recently and has showed superior performance to a model learned from only a single view. With the introduction of deep learning techniques to a multi-view learning approach, it has showed good results in various fields such as image, text, voice, and video. In this study, we introduce how multi-view learning methods solve various problems faced in human behavior recognition, medical areas, information retrieval and facial expression recognition. In addition, we review data integration principles of multi-view learning methods by classifying traditional multi-view learning methods into data integration, classifiers integration, and representation integration. Finally, we examine how CNN, RNN, RBM, Autoencoder, and GAN, which are commonly used among various deep learning methods, are applied to multi-view learning algorithms. We categorize CNN and RNN-based learning methods as supervised learning, and RBM, Autoencoder, and GAN-based learning methods as unsupervised learning.

Botnets, whose attack patterns are becoming more sophisticated and diverse, are recognized as one of the most serious cybersecurity threats today. This paper revisits the experimental results of botnet detection using autoencoder, a semi-supervised deep learning model, for UGR and CTU-13 data sets. To prepare the input vectors of autoencoder, we create data points by grouping the NetFlow records into sliding windows based on source IP address and aggregating them to form features. In particular, we discover a simple power-law; that is the number of data points that have some flow-degree is proportional to the number of NetFlow records aggregated in them. Moreover, we show that our power-law fits the real data very well resulting in correlation coefficients of 97% or higher. We also show that this power-law has an impact on the learning of autoencoder and, as a result, influences the performance of botnet detection. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of autoencoder using the area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve.
