  • The flow field structures of two interacting parallel supersonic free jets are studied by flow visualization using planar laser-induced fluorescence of NO seeded in nitrogen gas. The experiments are carried out for several distances between two orifice centers and for various ratios of the pressure in the reservoir to that in the expansion chamber. The flow fields are visualized mainly on the plane including two jet centerlines and its characteristic shock system, especially a cell structure formed secondly by interaction of two jets, are analyzed. The positions of the normal shock depending on the pressure ratios are also compared.

  • A two-dimensional Euler code based on flux vector splitting scheme has been developed to simulate the behavior of supersonic shock wave over the cylinder. AF+ADI scheme was used for time integration. The sliding multiblock technique was implemented to handle the relative motion of the moving cylinder and the stationary tunnel. The code is validated with a problem of subsonic flow around a Naca-0012 airfoil. The Computation results show complex phenomena of the propagation of shock waves and the reflection as expansion wave at tunnel exit.

  • For the improvement of aerodynamic performance of the turbine blade in a turbopump for the liquid rocket engine, the optimization of turbine profile shape has been studied. The turbine in a turbopump in this study is a partial admission of impulse type, which has twelve nozzles and supersonic inflow. Due to the separated nozzles and supersonic expansion, the flow field becomes complicates and shows oblique shocks and flow separation. To increase the blade power, redesign of the blade shape using CFD and optimization method was attempted. The turbine cascade shape was represented by four design parameters. For optimization, genetic algorithm based upon non-gradient search has been selected as a optimizer. As a result, the final blade has about 4 percent more blade power than the initial shape.

  • When the stagnation temperature of a perfect gas increases, the specific heats and their ratio do not remain constant any more and start to vary with this temperature. The gas remains perfect; its state equation remains always valid, except, it is named in more by calorically imperfect gas. The aim of this work is to trace the profiles of the supersonic axisymmetric Minimum Length Nozzle to have a uniform and parallel flow at the exit section, when the stagnation temperature is taken into account, lower than the dissociation threshold of the molecules, and to have for each exit Mach number and stagnation temperature shape of nozzle. The method of characteristics is used with the algorithm of the second order finite differences method. The form of the nozzle has a point of deflection and an initial angle of expansion. The comparison is made with the calorically perfect gas. The application is for air.

  • Numerical Analysis has been done for the supersonic off-design jet flow due to the pressure difference between the jet and the ambient fluid. The difference of pressure generates an oblique shock or an expansion wave at the nozzle exit, The waves reflect repeatedly at the center axis and on the sonic surface in the shear layer, and the pressure difference is resolved across these waves interacted with the turbulence mixing layer. In this paper, the axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equation has been used with two equation $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence closure model. The second order TVD scheme with flux limiters, based on the flux vector split by the smooth eigenvalue split, has been used to capture internal shocks and other discontinuities. The correction term for the compressible flow and the damping function are used in the turbulence model. Numerical calculations have been done to analyze the off-design jet flow due to the pressure difference. The variation of pressure along the flow axis is compared with an experimental result and other numerical result. The characteristics of the interaction between the shock cell and the turbulence mixing layer have been analyzed.

  • Well-resolved vibronic emission spectra were recorded in the visible region from the corona discharge of precursor alkylbenzenes in a technique of corona excited supersonic expansion using a pinhole-type glass nozzle. From the observed spectra, we found the evidence of the presence of benzyl-type radicals generated by dissociation of C-C or C-H bonds of alkyl group. After identification of benzyl-type radicals formed in the corona discharge, we suggest that energy densities in alkyl chain play a crucial role in determining the bond dissociation during corona excitation.

  • The rotationally cooled but electronically excited m-xylyl radical has been generated in a jet from the gas mixture of precursor m-xylene and buffer gas He by a technique of corona excited supersonic expansion. The visible vibronic emission spectra in the transition of 12A2→12B2 of m-xylyl radical in the gas phase have been recorded using a Fourier transform spectrometer. The spectra have been analyzed for the assignments of the vibrational frequencies in the electronic ground state with combination of the torsional frequencies reported previously.

  • The graphite tube nozzle has been developed for the generation of metastable He jet by which the nitrogen molecules initially excited in a jet with Engelking type nozzle have been further excited in a corona excited supersonic expansion. The excitation process of nitrogen molecules in the jet collision has been discussed in detail by observing the emission intensity from the vibronic emission spectra of nitrogen molecules and nitrogen molecular ions upon helium jet collision.

  • The p-fluorobenzyl radical was generated from the p-fluorotoluene and vibronically excited in a corona excited supersonic expansion with inert buffer gases. The vibronic emission spectra of the jet cooled p-fluorobenzyl radical in the D1 → D0 transition have been observed in the visible region. The spectra exhibit several low frequency sequence bands in the vicinity of the every strong vibronic band. The characteristics of the sequence bands have been examined by varying the experimental conditions such as carrier gas and nozzle size to identify the origin of the transition in the spectra.

  • When supersonic underexpanded jets are exhausted from the nozzle, complex shock cell configurations such as barrel shock, expansion fan, Mach disc, and exhaust-gas jet boundary are appeared repetitively. The shock cell is smeared by turbulence dissipation and disappeared in long distance from the nozzle. When underexpanded jet is suddenly impinged on a flat plate, it forms very complex flow structure. In this paper, we solve compressible Wavier-Stokes equation adapting finite volume method to obtain jet impingement flow structure and compare calculated data with experimental ones. It is shown that numerical simulation data are in good agreement with experimental one in a short distance between nozzle exit and flat plate and little influence of underexpanded ratio is appeared in jet impingement now distribution.
