  • During the conceptual design phase of fighter class aircraft, the high speed wind tunnel test with 1/20 scale wing-body-tail model has been conducted to investigate the effects of leading edge flap deflection on the supersonic cruise performance of the aircraft. To select the proper leading edge flap deflection for the wind tunnel test, the aerodynamic characteristics due to various leading edge flap deflections have been analyzed by using corrected supersonic panel method. Based on the results obtained from the experimental and numerical approaches, the effects of leading edge flap deflection have shown to be useful to enhance the supersonic cruise performance of fighter class aircraft.

  • Wing flap deflection angles of a supersonic transport are optimized to improve transonic cruise performance. For this end, a numerical optimization method is adopted using a three-dimensional unstructured Euler code and a discrete adjoint code. Deflection angles of ten flaps; five for leading edge and five fur railing edge, are employed as design variables. The elliptic equation method is adopted for the interior grid modification during the design process. Interior grid sensitivities are neglected for efficiency. Also tested is the validity of the approximate gradient evaluation method for the present design problem and found that it is applicable for loading edge flap design in cases of no shock waves on the wing surface. The BFGS method is used to minimize the drag with constraints on the lift and upper surface Mach numbers. Two design examples are conducted; one is leading edge flap design, and the other is simultaneous design of leading edge and trailing edge flaps. The latter gave a smaller drag than the former by about two counts.

  • To reduce drag force at supersonic speeds, sharp leading edge is hugely efficient. It is, however, incompatible with leading edge shape to have fine aerodynamic characteristics at subsonic and transonic speeds. It is critical to reduce drag force for enhanced cruise performance and higher efficiency. An air superiority fighter, however, required to have high maneuverability for survivability, and sharp leading edge is not proper. Consequently, variable leading edge is demanded to reduce drag force significantly at supersonic speeds for cruise performance. Leading edge altering system is constructed with rigid material to improve possibility of realization, and minimized movement of its components in altering for reduce effects on flight. It is compared with bi-convex airfoil and NACA 65-006 airfoil, which have comparable maximum thickness. At Mach number 1.7 and zero angle of attack, supersonic mode of designed airfoil indicates approximately 17% higher drag coefficient than the bi-convex airfoil indicates, it is, however, 23% lower than the NACA 65-006 indicates. Also, subsonic mode of the designed airfoil shows fine aerodynamic characteristics in comparison with NACA 65-006 airfoil in subsonic and transonic speed range. In this regard, design of the airfoil achieved the object of this study satisfactorily.

  • Performance of injector equiped with screw type swirler which is suitable for supersonic cruise engine combustor was investigated using theoretical, numerical, and experimental methods. Based on discharge coefficient and spray angle which represent the performance of injectors, the geometrical parameters which affect these performance parameters were defined, control group injectors were designed, and variation of performance parameters according to the geometrical parameters were examined. Within the defined range, measured value of performance of injectors was smaller than result of theoretical prediction, and prediction result from numerical simulation using VOF method agreed with the result of experiments very well. The viscous barrier was not observed, and minimum discharge coefficient and maximum spray angle, 0.05 and 104 respectively, was obtained for this type of injector.

  • The design process of blended inlet body (BIB) for the preliminary design of a near-space high supersonic unmanned aerial vehicle (HSUAV) is presented. The mass flow rate and cowl area of inlet at a design point are obtained according to the cruise condition of the HSUAV. A mixed-compression axisymmetric supersonic inlet section with a fixed geometry reasonably matching the high supersonic cruise state is created by using the inviscid theory of aerodynamics. The inlet section is optimized and used as a baseline section for the BIB design. Three BIB concepts for the HSUAV are proposed, and their internal aerodynamic characteristics of inlet are evaluated using Euler computational fluid dynamics (Euler CFD) solver. The preferred concept is identified, in which the straight leading edge of the baseline HSUAV configuration is modified into the convex leading edge to accommodate the inlet and meet the requirements of the cowl area to capture the sufficient air flow. The total recovery of inlet for the preferred BIB concept and the aerodynamic characteristics of the modified HSUAV configuration are verified using Navier-Stokes computational fluid dynamics (NS CFD) solver. The validation indicates that the preferred BIB concept can meet both the requirements of the inlet and aerodynamic performance of the HSUAV.

  • Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) devices have received considerable attention in recent years as a means to either improve the propulsive characteristics of hypersonic cruise missiles or as a means to generate power at low cost in drag and weight aboard scramjet powered vehicles. Based on more complete physical models than previously used, it is here argued that the use of MHD is not valuable in improving the performance of hypersonic propulsion systems through prevention of boundary layer separation or power bypass. This is due to the inevitable high amount of Joule heating accompanying MHD flow control having considerable undesired adverse effects on the engine performance. On the other hand, preliminary estimates indicate that MHD is likely to succeed in generating high amounts of power with little additional drag to feed megawatt-class energy weapons on-board scramjet engines.
