Supersonic liquid jet discharged from a nozzle has been investigated by using a ballistic range which is composed of high-pressure tube, pump tube, launch tube and liquid storage nozzle. High-speed Schlieren optical method was used to visualize the supersonic liquid jet flow field containing shock wave system, and spray droplet diameter was measured by the laser diffraction method. Experiment was performed with various types of nozzle to investigate the major characteristics of the supersonic liquid jet operating at the range of total pressure of 0.8 from 2.14 GPa. The results obtained shows that shock wave considerably affects the detailed atomization process of the liquid jet and as the nozzle diameter decreases, the shock wave angle and the averaged SMD of spray droplet tends to decrease.
The effects of projectile impact system on the transient spray characteristic which is supersonic liquid tip velocity were studied by experimentally. Supersonic liquid jets were generated by impact of a high speed projectile driven by a Two-stage light gas gun. A high speed camera and schlieren optical system were used to capture the spray structures of the supersonic liquid jets. In a case of nozzle assembly Type-A, expansion gases accelerate a projectile which has a mass of 6 grams from 250 m/s at the exit of the launch tube. Accelerated projectile collides with the liquid storage part, then supersonic liquid jets are injected with instantaneous spray tip velocity from 617.78 m/s to 982.54 m/s with various nozzle L/d. However, In a case of nozzle assembly Type-B which has a heavier projectile (60 grams) and lower impact velocity (182 m/s), an impact pressure was decreased. Thus the liquid jet injected at 210 m/s of the maximum velocity did not penetrate a shock wave and fast break-up was occurred. Pulsed injection of liquid column generated second shock wave and multiple shock wave.
This paper report our preliminary results of characterizing the jet structures of kerosene injection into quiescent atmosphere and a Mach 2.5 crossflow at various preheat temperature. A heating system has been designed and tested that can prepare heated kerosene of 0.8 kg up to 670 K at a pressure of 5.5 ㎫. Temperature measurement near the injector shows that the temperature of pressurized kerosene can be kept constant during the experimental duration. Comparison of kerosene jet structures in the preheat temperature range of 290-550 K demonstrates that with injection pressure of 4 ㎫ the jet plume turns into vapor phase completely at injection temperature of 550 K, while keeping the penetration depth essentially unchanged. The results suggest that the injection of vaporized fuel would improve the performance of a liquid hydrocarbon-fueled supersonic combustor because the evaporation process is now omitted.
Understanding the fundamental characteristics of supersonic hydrogen jets is important for the optimization of combustion in hydrogen engines. Previous studies have used helium as a surrogate gas to characterize the hydrogen jet characteristics due to potential explosion risks of hydrogen. It was based on the similarity of hydrogen and helium jet structures in supersonic conditions that has been confirmed using hole-type injectors and large-cone-angle pintle-type injectors. However, the validity of using helium as a surrogate gas has not been examined for recent small-cone-angle pintle-type injectors applied to direct-injection hydrogen engines, which form a supersonic hollow cone near the nozzle and experience the jet collapse downstream. Differences in the physical properties of hydrogen and helium could alter the jet development characteristics that need to be investigated and understood. This study compares supersonic jet structures of hydrogen and helium injected by a small-cone-angle (50°) pintle-type hydrogen injector and discusses their differences and related mechanisms. Jet penetration length and dispersion angle are measured using the Schlieren imaging method under engine-like injection conditions. As a result, the penetration length of hydrogen and helium jets showed a slight difference of less than 5%, and the dispersion angle showed a maximum of 10% difference according to the injection condition.
Pulsed supersonic liquid jets injected into an ambient air are empirically studied by using a high pressure ballistic range system. Ballistic range systems which are configured with high-pressure tube, pump tube, launch tube and liquid storage nozzle. Experimental studies are conducted to use with various impact nozzle geometry. Supersonic liquid jets are generated by an impact of high speed of the projectile. High speed liquid jets are injected with M = 3.2 which pressure is 1.19 GPa. Multiple jets which accompany with shock wave and pressure wave in front of the jet were observed. The shock-wave affects significantly atomization process for each spray droplets. As decreasing orifice diameter, the averaged SMD of spray jets had the decreasing tendency.
Icing cloud generation system was developed to perform the in-flight icing simulation test for T-50 Supersonic Jet Trainer on the ground. The developed system successfully generated the almost natural icing cloud in the super-cooled state (liquid state) below freezing point and with the required LWC (Liquid Water Content). For full-scale aircraft icing test, an icing scaling method was adopted due to the limitation of wind generation speed with open-circuit type blower and its applicability was experimentally verified. Under the required in-flight icing condition based on the icing scaling method, T-50 aircraft subsystems were successfully operated and functionally checked.
