  • This study was performed to examine the mycological features of canine skin. A total of 50 dogs with skin lesions were examined for dermatology from October, 2000 to April, 2001. The isolation rates of dermatophytes, yeast, filamentous fungi and superficial fungi were 36.4%, 13.5%, 35.3% and 13.6%. The dermatophytes isolated in dogs were Microsporum canins and Trichophyton mentagrophytes were 75% and 25%. The yeast and superficial fungi isolated in dogs were Candida albicans, Rhodntorula minnata, Candida ceferrii and Malassezia spp. were 16.7%. 16.7%, 16.7% and 50%. The filamentous fungi by Aspergillus funigatus, Aspergillus niger, Penicillum spp., Alternaria spp. were 12.5%, 12.5%, 50%, and 25%. In determine if polymerase chain reaction (PCR) could be applied for diagnosis of dermatophytes, yeast and filamentous fungi, control and clinical samples were tested. The size of specific PCR product in agarose gel was 340 bp for dermatophytes and 210 bp for yeast and filamentous fungi, respectively.

  • The tissue distribution and cellular localization of viral antigen in the brain of aborted fetus with bovine viral diarrhea virus(BVDV) infection was studied; BVDV antigens was detected in spleen, kidney, lung, eyelid as well as brain. In the brain, the virus was recognized in neurons and non-neuronal cells in the cerebellum and cerebrum. Many cells in the superficial layer and occasional Purkinje cells had BVDV antigens. As well, BVDV was also found in the perivascular cells, vascular endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells in the vessels and neuroglial cells in the white matter. This finding suggests that BVD virus favors infect progenitor cells in the brain, notably in the superficial layer of cerebellum, and damage normal development of cerebellum, which leads to cerebellar hypoplasia.

  • Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is most frequent malignant tumor of parotid gland. However, mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising from pleomorphic adenoma has been disputed and rarely reported. 54-year-old woman with pleomorphic adenoma underwent superficial parotidectomy. And 15 years later, she diagnosed mucoepidermoid carcinoma at the same side. We report the case with a review of literature.

  • This study is an attempt to review the theories about the RF and microwave hyperthermia and to get the practical implementation of hyperthermia system on the basic clinical experiments with agar phantoms and four patients. The frequencies of RF power are 8 MHz and 16 MHz, which are effective for the heating of deep-seated and superficial tumors, and microwave is 2.45 GHz, also suitable for the heating of superficial tumors. Even if the long-term effect of clinical applications were not investigated for human living body, it was observee that the RF and microwave hyperthermias are effective for many kinds of cancers in the fixed frequency ranges.

  • According to the mode of development of antheridia and antheridial mother cells, the antheridium formation of Rhodymeniales is divided into two types. I. Separate Type; Antheridial mother cells are separate one another. Antheridia and the mother cell are surrounded by the common wall. The superficial gelatinous wall covering antheridial sori disappears during the antheridium formation. Spermatia are comparatively large. Halosaccion saccatum, H. firmum, Rhodymenia palmata and Rh. marginicrassa. II. Seriate Type; Antheridial mother cells, originated from the same epidermal cell, are seriate one another with a pit-connection. Antheridia and the mother cell do not have the common wall. The superficial gelatinous wall remains during the antheridium formation. Spermatia are comparatively small. Rhodymenia intricata, Rh. pertusa, Chrysymenia wrightii, Lomentaria hakodatensis, L. catenata, Binghamia californica and Champia parvula.

  • Vocal folds injury from vocal abuse is important topics of phonosurgery. Recent advances in diagnostic equipment, phonosurgery and speech analysis equipment have provided a lot of Information about fine movement of the vocal folds. However, predicting the reaction of the vocal folds to phonatory trauma remains difficult. The vocal folds need to withstand great vibratory and shearing stress and anchoring fibers of basement membrane Bone play a role in maintaining structural integrity of histologically different epidermis and superficial layer of lamina propria(cover of vocal folds). The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the changes of anchoring fibers in vocal polyp using transmission electron microscope. Various defects were observed : a irregular thickening of basement membrane, a near absence of normal anchoring fiber, a lot of electron dense material in superficial layer of lamina propria, a destruction of hemidesmosome and many vesicles carrying electron dense material In basal keratinocyte. These observations were suggestive of a hyperactivity of basal keratinocyte of vocal folds epithelium in response to vibratory stress.

  • A 7-month-old intact female Persian cat was diagnosed with symblepharon accompanied by epiphora, brownish ocular discharge, and ocular discomfort in the left eye. Superficial keratectomy (SK) was performed to remove adhesions between the conjunctiva and cornea. To prevent re-adhesion after SK, the detached conjunctival tissue was sutured to the corneal limbus, and a soft contact lens (SCL) was inserted and a partial temporary tarsorrhaphy was performed. The SCL and tarsorrhaphy sutures were maintained for 22 days, and symblepharon did not recur 347 days postoperatively. SK combined with SCL is a relatively easy and cost-effective surgical option for feline symblepharon.

  • A 15-year-old, spayed, female American shorthair cat presented with recurrent corneal sequestrum in the right eye. The cat had undergone superficial keratectomy twice for corneal sequestrum treatment 5 and 11 months previously. Two layers of porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS; Vetrix BioSIS®) were applied to the surgical corneal defect after keratectomy. Thereafter, clinical signs, such as lacrimation, blepharospasm, and corneal ulcer, disappeared 50 days postoperatively. Moreover, the application of SIS with keratectomy prevented recurrence until 651 days after surgery. SIS could be applied as an additional bioscaffold for surgical repair of corneal sequestrum recurring after superficial keratectomy alone in cats.

  • Superficial angiomyxoma (SA) is a rare, benign, cutaneous soft tissue tumor. It is composed of myxoid matrix and blood vessels. Herein, we report a case of a solitary SA on the posterior neck of a 6-year-old boy. An analysis of the biopsied specimen showed a prominent myxoid stroma with thin-walled, branching blood vessels, revealing the presence of an SA. SA especially that originating in the posterior neck, is rarely seen and should be considered as a differential diagnosis for a solitary mass in the posterior neck.
