Analysis on operation characteristics and power burdens of the double quench trigger type SFCLs

  • To protect the power systems from fault current, the rated protective equipment should be installed. However growth of power system scale and concentration of loads caused the large fault current in power transmission system and distribution system. The capacities of installed protective equipment have been exceeded the due to increase of fault current. This increase is not temporary phenomenon but will be steadily as long as the industry develops. The power system operator need a counter-measurement for safety, so superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been received attention as effective solutions to reduce the fault current. For the above reasons various type SFCLs have been studied recently. In this paper, operation characteristics and power burden of trigger type SFCL is studied. The trigger type SFCL has been used for real system research in many countries. Another trigger type SFCL (double quench trigger type SFCL) is also studied. For this paper, short circuit test is performed.

124-142 GHz Dual-Polarization Superconducting Mixer Receiver for Korean VLBI Network

  • We have developed superconducting mixer receivers for 129 GHz VLBI observation in Korean VLBI Network(KVN). The developed mixer has a radial waveguide probe with simple transmission line LC transformer as a tuning circuit to its 5 series-connected junctions, which can have 125-165 GHz as operation RF frequency. For IF signal path a high impedance quarter-wavelength line connects the probe to one end of symmetric RF chokes. DSB receiver noise of the mixer was about 40 K over 4-6 GHz IF band whereas we achieved about uncorrected SSB noise temperature of 70 K and better than 10 dB IRR in 2SB configuration with 8-10 GHz IF band. Insert-type receiver cartridges using the mixers have been assembled for all three KVN stations. On-site performance summary in commissioning phase is presented.

$CeO_2$의 상전이에 따른 YBCO 박막의 결정성 및 특성의 변화 (Effect of buffer layer on YBCO film deposited on Hastelloy substrate)

  • We have fabricated good quality superconducting $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta}$ thin films on Hastelloy(Ni-Cr-Mo alloys) metallic substrate with $CeO_2$ and $BaTiO_3$ buffer layers in-situ by pulsed laser deposition in a multi-target processing chamber. We have chosen $CeO_2$ as a buffer layer which has cubic structure of $5.41{\AA}$ lattice parameter and only 0.2% of lattice mismatch with YBCO. $CeO_2$ layer may be helpful for power transmission due to its conducting property. In order to enhance the crystallization of YBCO films on metallic substrates. we deposited $CeO_2$ and $BaTiO_3$ buffer layers at various temperatures. The YBCO superconducting tape fabricated with $BaTiO_3$ and $CeO_2$ buffer layers shows 85K of transition temperature and about $8.4{\times}10^4A/cm^2$ of critical current density at 77K.

  • KEPCO Research Institute has been researching a Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) which is considered one of solutions of fault current problems with Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM) and Hanyang University since 2011. In this paper, we fabricated a current limiting module and conducted electrical short circuit tests for checking the validity of the transmission level SFCL design. Based on the short circuit characteristics of the second generation High Temperature Superconductor (HTS), we analyzed the short circuit characteristics of 3 parallel connected superconducting wires. The structure of the HTS wire is as follows: the stainless steel stabilizer of $100{\mu}m$ is laminated on the superconductor layer and under the substrate, both of which are electrically jointed with solder. We fabricated the current limiting module which has 40 series and 6 parallel connections and studied the short circuit characteristics of the module under various voltage levels.

  • High temperature superconducting(HTS) power cable is expected to be used for power transmission lines supplying electric power for densely populated cities in the near future. Since HTS power cable is capable of the high current density delivery with low power loss, the cable size can be compact comparing with the conventional cable whose capacity is same. In this paper, the authors propose the real time simulation method which puts a teal HTS wire into the simulated 22.9 kV utility grid system using Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). For the simulation analysis, test sample of HTS wire was actually manufactured. And the transient phenomenon of the HTS wire was analyzed in the simulated utility power grid. This simulation method is the world first trial in order to obtain much better data for installation of HTS power device into utility network.

  • The superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) can be used to limit fault current level in electrical transmission line and power system. Up to now, there are several kinds of SFCL that have proposed and it is expects that they will be applied to appropriated position considering their own properties; initial fault current limiting instant and the current limiting characteristics. In this paper, we investigated the initial fault current limiting instant and the amplitude of initial fault current in the resistive type, the flux-lock type, the flux-coupling type and the transformer type SFCL. Experiment results show that the initial fault current limiting instant and the amplitude of initial fault current of the SFCLs are dependant on the ratio of inductance of primary and secondary coils.

초전도한류기의 계통도입을 위한 경제적 타당성 검토 (A Economic feasibility of Superconducting Fault Current Limiter in Korean Power System)

  • As power system grows more complex and power demands increase, the fault current tends to gradually increase. In the near future, the fault current will exceed a circuit breaker rating for some substations, which is an especially important issue in the Seoul metropolitan area because of its highly meshed configuration. Currently, the Korean power system is regulated by changing the 154kV system configuration from a loop connection to a radial system, by splitting the bus where load balance can be achieved, and by upgrading the circuit breaker rating. A development project applying 154kV Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(SFCL) to 154kV transmission systems is proceeding with implementation slated for after 2010. In this paper, the expected price of SFCL in order to assure the economic feasibility is evaluated comparing with upgrading cost of ciui.1 breakers. The results show that the SFCL should be developed under seven times of price of circuit breaker to be competitive against upgrading circuit breakers.

  • Important key technologies of high-$T_c$ superconducting (HTS) transformer may include the HTS wire technology, bushing technology, cooling technology, AC loss, reduction technology, large current technology, and cryogenic temperature insulation technology. From among others, the cryogenic temperature insulation technology may be specifically a core technology for ensuring reliability for the smaller size, stability, economic efficiency, and power supply of a transformer. Therefore, the electric insulation technology of a superconducting transformer should be prerequisite. Such relevant studies are ongoing, but still, they are very insufficient for establishing the cryogenic insulation technology as of yet. Therefore, this paper simulated HTS transformer applied with continuous transposed conductor (CTC), which has been studied as a way of reducing AC loss. Also, the paper analyzed the insulation configuration of HTS transformer and bushing, and, accordingly, reviewed various characteristics of insulation breakdown out of liquid nitrogen. Thus, the paper constituted insulation database, and it is going to design the insulation of a transmission class HTS transformer and bushing.

  • We have fabricated good quality superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-{\delta}}$ thin films on Hastelloy(Ni-Cr-Mo alloys) with $CeO_2$ buffer layers by in-situ pulsed laser deposition in a multi-target processing chamber. Using one of electrical properties of YBCO superconducting which the resistance approaches to zero dramatically on transition temperature, we have researched to make power transmission line, we have deposited YBCO thin film on flexible metallic substrate. However, it is difficult to make films on flexible metallic substrates due to both interdiffusion problem between metallic substrate and superconducting layer and non-crystallization of YBCO on amorphous substrate. From early research, two ways-using textured metallic substrate and buffer layer-were proposed to overcome theses difficulties. We have chosen $CeO_2$ as a buffer layer which has cubic structure of $5.41{\AA}$ lattice parameter and only 0.2% of lattice mismatch with $3.82{\AA}$ of a-axis lattice parameter of YBCO on (110) direction of $CeO_2$. In order to enhance the crystallization of YBCO films on metallic substrates we deposited $CeO_2$ buffer layers at varying temperature $700^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ and $O_2$ pressure. By X-ray diffraction, we found that each domination of (200) and (111) orientations were strongly relied upon the deposition temperature in $CeO_2$ layer and the change of the domination of orientation affects the crystallization of YBCO upper layer.
