Effect of Super Heated Steam Treatment on Physical Property and Smoke Component of Burley Cut Tobacco (과열증기처리에 의한 Burley종 각초의 물리성 및 연기성분 변화에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of super heated steam on the physical and chemical changes of burley cut tobacco. Total sugar, total alkaloid, ether extracts, crude ash, total nitrogen and pH for leaf chemical constituents were analyzed. Filling power and fineness index for physical properties, and carbonyl compounds, phenol compounds, amonia, pH, hydrogen cyanide nicotine, carbon monoxide, total volatile base and tar for smoke components were also analyzed. The cut tobacco treated with super heated steam showed significant decrease in total sugar and total alkaloid. The filling power of the sample treated with the super heated steam system was increased abruptly when heated at over 250℃. The fineness index showed similar tendency to that of common toast method. Super heated steam treatment slightly decreased carbonyl compounds, phenol compounds, hydrogen cyanide, nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar in the tobacco. Especially the decrease of ammonia was the most remarkable. The pH of smoke was a little different compared with that in the common toast. The sensory test results showed that, compared to the common conveyer moving system, the tobacco treated with super heated steam system brought out more roasted flavor, lowered impact, irritation, and sting, further improved aftertaste, and lowered bitterness. The super heated steam treatment method used in the studies is expected to give better filling power, mild taste and toasted odor of tobacco than that of the common method for toast treatment. Quality Characteristics of Ginseng Treated by Hot Air Drying after Being Dried using Super-heated Steam (초급속 과열증기를 이용한 인삼의 품질 특성)

  • This research aims to develop a new drying technology using super-heated steam to reduce the time required for drying ginseng and to enhance its quality. The drying rate of ginseng powder treated with hot-air drying after drying with super-heated steam was about 40% faster than the drying rate of ginseng powder treated with hot-air drying. Minimal difference was found between hot-air drying and hot-air drying after drying with super-heated steam in the general composition of the ginseng powder, such as its crude lipid, crude protein, crude fiber, and ash. Moreover, no difference was found between hot-air drying and hot-air drying after drying with super-heated steam in terms of the ginseng powder's mineral and free sugar contents. The crude saponin contents was 5.43% in the ginseng treated with hot-air drying and 5.4% in the ginseng treated with hot-air drying after drying with super-heated steam. The ginseng powder that was treated with hot-air drying after drying with super-heated steam had a slightly higher redness compared to the ginseng powder that was treated with hot-air drying alone. The number of microorganisms of the ginseng powder treated with hotair drying after drying with super-heated steam showed a reduction of one log cycle in the total bacteria and two log cycles in the yeast molds compared to the ginseng powder treated with hot-air drying alone.

  • It is important that overheat protection of super heated tube in boiler operation and maintenance. The overheat of super heat tube can make damage and rupture of tube material, which causes accidental shutdown of boiler. The super heated tube overheat is almost due to the lack of uniformity of gas temperature distribution. There are two ways to protect overheat of super heated tube. The one is to control hot gas operation pattern which is temperature or flow distribution. the other is to control super heated steam flow distribution. The former is difficult than the later, because of control device design. In this paper steam flow control method which uses orifices is proposed to protect overheat of super heat tube.

  • This study presents an experimental investigation of the wear and oxidation of the bristles of a brush seal in a super-heated steam environment. We construct a model reflecting normal force and radial interference to predict the amount of wear. To monitor the volume loss of the bristle induced by the swirl phenomenon of the rotor, we measure the clearance between the rotor and the brush seal by using a non-contact 3-D device. We calculate the area by using the area-wise measurement method. Considering the obvious brush seal wear variables, we use two disks with different roughness($Ra=0.1{\mu}m$ and $100{\mu}m$) to determine the effect of roughness on wear. Considering an actual steam turbine, we utilize a steam generator and super-heater to generate a working fluid (0.95MPa, 523.15K) that has high kinetic energy. We observe the abrasion of the bristles in the hot steam environment through a scanning electron microscope image. This study also conducted energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis for a qualitative evaluation of local chemistry. The results indicate that the wear and elimination of bristles occur on the disk with high roughness, and the weight increases due to oxidation. Furthermore these results, reveal that the bristle oxidation is accelerated more under super-heated steam conditions than under conditions without steam.

  • Recently, MBT(Mechanical Biological Treatment) facilities were built up and operated to separate and recycle MSW(Municipal Solid Wastes)in South Korea. However, the size distribution of MSW is very rough, and it is causing operation problem because MSW would be crushed in undersize diameter by mechanical equipment before feeding each seperation process. Also, the organic material should be pre-seperated to reuse recycle material in MSW. In this research, the reactor of 1ton/batch using the super-heated steam was tested to present the separation efficiency and the size distribution of MSW by experimental factors.

  • System-Integrated Modular Advanced Reactor (SMART), where major primary components such as modular helical steam generator and self regulating pressurizer are integrated into reactor vessel, is currently under development. The pressurizer is designed to control the primary pressure mainly with partial pressure of nitrogen gas and to maintain the fluid temperature as low as possible for the purpose of minimizing steam contribution. The steam generator (SG) is designed to produce super-heated steam inside tube at power operation. Because the in-vessel pressurizer and in-vessel SG are classified as the characteristic components of SMART, it is important to perform a steady state calculation of these components in order to evaluate the adoption of these components. A steady state analysis of the in-vessel pressurizer and in-vessel SG has been performed under normal power operation and the results show an acceptable performance of the components.

  • Desuperheater is a passive device to control the temperature of steam in various plants. However, in spite of its simple structure, the accurate prediction of a desuperheater is very difficult because there are many designed factors for the design of a desuperheater. In this study, the theory of heat transfer phenomena in a desuperheater was developed and the various design factors are evaluated. As a results, we confirmed that the droplet size of 30 - 200 is best effective for the performance of a desuperheater.

Studies on Physico-chemical Properties of Chicken Meat Cooked in Electric Oven Combined with Superheated Steam (전기오븐에서 과열증기주입에 따른 열처리가 닭고기의 이화학적 특성변화에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to observe the effect of superheated steam combined with oven heating on the physico-chemical and sensory properties of chicken meat. Specially, chicken breasts and thighs were heated for 40 min in various heating formulations such as oven heating, superheated steam heating or a combination of two kinds of heating. In the physical properties measurement, the shear force was increased as superheated steam heating time and chicken thighs were higher than chicken breasts in all treatments (p<0.05). The highest level of water holding capacity was solely superheated steam treated chicken for 40 min (p<0.05). The $L^*$ value was decreased but $a^*$ value or $b^*$ value were increased after cooking. Chicken breast exhibited a higher colour value than chicken thigh. Superheated heating was effective to reduce heating loss as 22.64% (p<0.05). However, pH was not different depending on the heating formulation or part of the chicken meat (p>0.05). In the sensory test, the combination of 10 min oven heating and 30 min superheated steam heating was effective to create a good flavour of chicken meat. In this study, an optimum formulation was developed which was a combination of 10 min oven heating and 30 min superheated steam heating. It was more effective to improve the quality of chicken meat than the single heat treatment of chicken meat.

Degradation of Organic Component in MSW by Super-heated Steam (과열(過熱) 증기(蒸氣)를 이용한 국내 폐기물(廢棄物) 유기성(有機性) 성분의 분해(分解) 특성 연구)

  • Degradation of the organic component in the waste were carried out by superheated steam in a pressurized vessel. The effects of waste characteristics, reaction temperature and residence time on the degradation rate have been determined. The biodegradable organic components such as food and paper waste have been degraded, and plastics, wood and metal were remained without degradation. The degradation efficiency is decided by the desizing rate of the waste, and the waste mixture with 23% biodegradable organic component shows higher desizing rate than that of the 43% of the biodegradable organic component in a short residence time and the desizing rate is found to be 90% in the maximum condition.

  • Hydrogen can be produced by reforming reaction of natural gas (NG) and biogas, or by water electrolysis. In this study, hydrogen production through water-electrolysis needs superheated steam above $700^{\circ}C$ for high efficiency. The production method of hydrogen like this was recommended for the 4-type processes for superheated steam ($700^{\circ}C$, 3 atm) by Bio-SRF combustion furnace. The 4-type processes to produce superheated steam at $700^{\circ}C$ from the heat source of SRF combustion furnace was simulated using PRO II. The optimum process was selected through exergy analysis. The difference of process 1 and 2 is to the order of depressure and heating process to change $180^{\circ}C$ and 7 atm to $700^{\circ}C$ and 3 atm. Process 3 and 4 is to utilize 25% of steam to generate superheated steam and remaining to use for the power generation by steam generator.
