This paper deals with the accumulated damage in concrete structures due to the cyclic freeze-thaw as an environmental load. The cyclic ice body nucleation and growth processes in porous systems are affected by the thermo-physical and mass transport properties, and gradients of temperature and chemical potentials. Furthermore, the diffusivity of deicing chemicals shows significantly higher value under cyclic freeze-thaw conditions. Consequently, the disintegration of concrete structures is aggravated at marine environments, higher altitudes, and northern areas. However, the properties of cyclic freeze-thaw with crack growth and diffusion of chloride ion effects are hard to be identified in tests, and there has been no analytic model for the combined degradations. The main objective is to determine the driving force and evaluate the reduced strength and stiffness by freeze-thaw. For the development of computational model of those coupled deterioration, micro-pore structure characterization, pore pressure based on the thermodynamic equilibrium, time and temperature dependent super-cooling with or without deicing salts, nonlinear-fracture constitutive relation for the evaluation of internal damage, and the effect of entrained air pores (EA) has been modeled numerically. As a result, the amount of ice volume with temperature dependent surface tensions, freezing pressure and resulting deformations, and cycle and temperature dependent pore volume has been calculated and compared with available test results. The developed computational program can be combined with DuCOM, which can calculate the early aged strength, heat of hydration, micro-pore volume, shrinkage, transportation of free water in concrete. Therefore, the developed model can be applied to evaluate those various practical degradation cases as well.
The development of a new material which should be continuously use under severe environment of very high temperature has been urgently requested. For the development of such super-heat resistant materials, the main problem is not only to make the superior thermal barrier properties but also to actively release thermal stress. So, a new concept of functionally graded material(FGM) has been proposed to overcome this problem. A composition and microstructure of FGM are varied continuously from place to place in ways designed to provide it with the maximum function of mitigating the induced thermal stress. So, FGM can be applied in the aerospace, the electronic and the medical field, etc.. In this study, thermal stress analysis of sintering PSZ/NiCrAlY graded material was conducted theoretically using a finite-element program. The temperature condition was sintering temperature assuming a cooling-down process up to room temperature. Fracture damage mechanism was anlayzed by the parameters of residual stress. It could be known that FGM provided with the function of mitigating the induced thermal stress.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate failure characteristic and mechanism of four commercial water-repellent coatings for elevated temperature machinery applications. Method: Thermal degradation was performed for up to 64 thermal cycles. 1 cycle consists of 15 minute holding at 523K under 300rpm revolution and 15 minute-natural cooling. Contact angle was measured and microstructure of the coating layer was observed by using a scanning electron microscope. Results: Four kinds of commercial repellent coating showed hydrophobic or super-hydrophobic property implying that all coatings are suitable for room temperature application. Contact angle of three kinds of commercial coatings decreased rapidly after thermal exposure, while only one specimen having hydrophobic surface showed extremely slow degradation. Conclusion: Observed decrease in contact angle of the coatings were attributed to formation of macro-sized pores and disappearance of micro-protrusion during thermal exposure. Optimum water-repellent coating needs to be selected under the consideration of initial contact angle as sell as service temperature.
Experimental study was performed to understand the operation of an on-site showcase working in a super discount store. Inlet and outlet temperatures of evaporator, condenser, expansion valve and compressor were measured for both air and refrigerant sides. Electric power consumption of compressors, defrosting heaters, cooling water pumps and etc. were measured. The operating characteristics of the showcase system under various working conditions were analyzed and discussed. During the defrosting process, the air temperature inside the showcase increased to $15^{\circ}C$, which gave harmful effect to the frozen food. The collected data will serve as valuable information for diagnosing and improving the performance of showcases.
Applicability of organic Rankine cycle for a passenger car with 3.5 L gasoline engine to convert low grade waste heat to useful shaft power has been numerically studied. Working fluid is R134a, and the Rankine cycle is composed of boiler for recovering engine cooling water heat, super heater for recovering exhaust gas heat, scroll expander for converting waste heat to shaft power, condenser for heat emission, internal heat exchanger, and feed pump. Assuming efficiencies of 90% for the heat exchangers, 75% for the scroll expander, and 80% for the feed pump, the Rankine cycle efficiency of 5.53% was calculated at the vehicle speed of 120 km/hr. Net expander shaft output after subtracting the power required to run the pump was 3.22 kW, which was equivalent to 12.1% improvement in fuel consumption. About the same level of improvement in the fuel consumption was obtained over the vehicle speed range of 60 km/hr~120 km/hr.

Recently, latent heat thermal energy storage system (LHTES) has gained attention in order to utilize middle temperature (373~573 K) waste heat from biomass gasification. This paper has investigated thermo-physical properties of erythritol [$CH_2OHCHOH$$CHOHCH_2OH$], mannitol [$CH_2OH$$(CHOH)_4CH_2OH$] and their compounds as phase change materials (PCMs). The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was applied to measure the melting point and latent heat of these PCMs. Also the melting and solidification characteristics of these PCMs were observed in a glass tube with a digital camera. In the DSC measurement, when the amount of mannitol content was more than 40 mass%, the melting point of these compounds show two melting points. The experimental results showed that the velocity of melting and solidification were different for every mixture ratio of compounds. These compounds had the super-cooling phenomenon during the solidification process.
An important goal in diesel engine research is the development of a means to reduce the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOX). The use of a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is one of the most effective techniques currently available for reducing nitrogen oxides. Since Particular Matter (PM) fouling reduces the efficiency of an EGR cooler, a trade-off exists between the amount of NOX and PM emissions, especially at high engine loads. In the present study, engine dynamometer experiments have been performed to investigate the heat exchange characteristics of the stack-type EGR coolers with wave fin pitches of 3.6 and 4.6 mm. The results show that the heat exchange effectiveness is decreased as surface area decrease with pitch of 4.6 mm due to PM fouling. As surface area increase at pitch of 3.6 mm, super-cooling happens in the recirculated exhaust gas.
Quantifying the solute composition of a cloud droplet (or a whole droplet) is an important task for understanding formation processes and heating/cooling rates. In this study, a combination of droplet fixation and SR-XRF microprobe analysis was used to visualize and quantify elements in a micro-scale droplet. In this study, we report the preliminary outcome of this experiment. A spherical micro-scale droplet was successfully solidified through exposure to ${\alpha}$-cyano-acrylate vapor without affecting its size or shape. An X-ray microprobe system equipped at the beam line 37XU of Super Photon ring 8 GeV (SPring-8) was applied to visualize and quantify the elemental composition in an individual micro-scale droplet. It was possible to reconstruct 2D elemental maps for the K and Cl contained in a microdroplet that was dispensed from the 10-ppm KCl standard solution. Multi-elemental peaks corresponding to X-ray energy were also successfully resolved. Further experiments to determine quantitative measures of elemental mass in individual droplets and high-resolution X-ray microtomography (i.e., 3D elemental distribution) are planned for the future.
Metallic shape memory alloys present fascinating physical properties such as their super-elastic behavior in austenite phase, which can be exploited for providing a structure with both a self-centering capability and an increased ductility. More or less accurate numerical models have been introduced to model their behavior along the last 25 years. This is the reason for which the literature is rich of suggestions/proposals on how to implement this material in devices for passive and semi-active control. Nevertheless, the thermo-mechanical coupling characterizing the first-order martensite phase transformation process results in several macroscopic features affecting the alloy performance. In particular, the effects of day-night and winter-summer temperature excursions require special attention. This aspect might imply that the deployment of some devices should be restricted to indoor solutions. A further aspect is the dependence of the behavior from the geometry one adopts. Two fundamental lacks of symmetry should also be carefully considered when implementing a SMA-based application: the behavior in tension is different from that in compression, and the heating is easy and fast whereas the cooling is not. This manuscript focuses on the passive devices recently proposed in the literature for civil engineering applications. Based on the challenges above identified, their actual feasibility is investigated in detail and their long term performance is discussed with reference to their fatigue life. A few available semi-active solutions are also considered.
Objective: The objectives of this study were to analyze efficacy of immature and mature mouse oocytes after vitrification and warming by applying various combinations of cryoprotectants (CPAs) and/or super-rapid cooling using slush nitrogen ($SN_2$). Methods: Four-week old ICR female mice were superovulated for GV- and MII-stage oocytes. Experimental groups were divided into two groups. Ethylene glycol (EG) only group: pre-equilibrated with 1.5 M EG for 2.5 minutes and then equilibrated with 5.5 M EG and 1.0 M sucrose for 20 seconds. EG+dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) group: pre-equilibrated with 1.3 M EG+1.1 M DMSO for 2.5 minutes and equilibrated with 2.7 M EG+2.1 M DMSO+0.5 M sucrose for 20 seconds. The oocytes were loaded onto grids and plunged into $SN_2$or liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$). Stored oocytes were warmed by a five-step method, and then their survival, maturation, cleavage, and developmental rates were observed. Results: The EG only and EG+DMSO groups showed no significant difference in survival of immature oocytes vitrified after warming. However, maturation and cleavage rates after conventional insemination were greater in the EG only group than in the EG+DMSO group. In mature oocytes, survival, cleavage, and blastocyst formation rates after warming showed no significant difference when EG only or EG+DMSO was applied. Furthermore, cleavage and blastocyst formation rates of MII oocytes vitrified using $SN_2$ were increased in both the EG only and EG+DMSO groups. Conclusion: A combination of CPAs in oocyte cryopreservation could be formulated according to the oocyte stage. In addition, $SN_2$ may improve the efficiency of vitrification by reducing cryoinjury.
