  • In order to measure surface roughness profile, stylus type equipments are commonly used, but the stylus keeps contact with surface and damages specimens by its tip pressure. Therefore, optics based measurement systems are developed, and light phase interferometer, which is based on light interference phenomenon, is the most noticeable research. However, light interference based measurements require translation mechanisms of nano-meter order in order to generate phase differences or multiple focusing, thus the systems cannot satisfy the industrial need of on-the-machine and in-process measurement to achieve factory automation and productive enhancement. In this research, we focused light reflectance phenomenon rather than the light interference, because reflectance based method do not need translation mechanisms. However, the method cannot direct]y measure surface roughness profile, because reflected light consists of several components and thus it cannot supply surface height information with its original form. In order to overcome the demerit, we newly proposed an image processing based algorithm, which can separate reflected light components and conduct parameterization and reconstruction process with respect to surface height information, and then confirmed the reliability of proposed algorithm by experiment.

  • The purpose of this paper is to identify the conceptions of middle school and high school students about visible light, Ultra violet(UV) and Infrared ray(IR). We administered questionnaire 40 people of middle school 3rd students and 43 people of high school 2nd students in Gyeonggi-do. Misconceptions about visible light, UV and Ir were observed in many students. The results of study are as follows: Firstly, Many students think that it is possible to see objects without visible light. The explanations given by students for the visiblity of objects in darkness indicates a heavy reliance on personal experiences. Secondly, we have confirmed that high school students well understand the fact that the object reflects the light. However, a significant number of students exhibited an eye-centered perspective of vision. Thirdly, students had a variety of ideas about the meaning of the term UV and IR. Analysis of questionnaire data indicates that many students believe that it is possible to see objects in the presence of UV light alone.

  • Light effects on temperature dependence of safflower oil oxidation and tocopherol degradation were studied. Safflower oil was oxidized at 20, 40, 60, or $80^{\circ}C$ for 30, 30, 15, and 6 days, respectively, in the dark or under light. Oil oxidation was evaluated with peroxide value (POV) and conjugated dienoic acid (CDA) value, and tocopherols were monitored by HPLC. Safflower oil consisted of palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic acids at 7.3, 2.0, 14.2, and 76.6%, respectively, with tocopherols at 1157.1 mg/kg. Peroxide and CDA values of safflower oil increased while tocopherol contents decreased with the oxidation time and temperature. Light increased and accelerated the oil oxidation and tocopherol degradation. Temperature dependence of the oil oxidation and tocopherol degradation was higher in the dark rather than under light. The results suggest that temperature control could be more essential in the dark rather than under light with regard to the oxidative stability of safflower oil.

  • The use of ranging sensors on automobiles is becoming common with the desire of traffic safety by providing drivers the information of the relative distance between the vehicles. In this paper, the LED visible light ranging system different from the conventional ranging systems using the RF signal is investigated. For such a system, we propose a novel ranging algorithm which combines the time-of-flight (TOF) with the CDMA technology. Via the CDMA technology, the TOF ranging system can accurately distinguish the desired ranging signal from the visible light interferences of the neighbor vehicles. In addition, the proposed system can also overcome the light noise from other luminaries, i.e. sun-light, traffic-light, and so on. The simulation results show that the CDMA-based LED ranging system has a significant improvement for the ranging accuracy compared with the case without employing the CDMA.

  • The objective of this research is an investigation of engineering properties of weathered granite soil mixed with Phosphogypsum and recycled EPS beads as an light-weighted soil. A series of geotechnical laboratory tests including physical index test, compaction test, CBR test and direct shear test were performed for various mixing ratios. Based on the laboratory test results, it was found that the maximum dry unit weight of the light weight soil ranges $1.46{\sim}1.61g/cm^3$ and the maximum dry unit weight decreases about 11~19.3% with the increase of amount of the recycled EPS beads and the optimum moisture content increase. Since the CBR values of the light weight soil ranges 10.4~18.4%, the light weight soil mixed with Phosphogypsum and recycled EPS beads can be used as a light weight backfill material on the soft soil.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate light intensity and uniformity of two SMD (surface-mount device) type LEDs for protected crop production. A low-power (0.1 W) and a high-power (1 W) LEDs were selected and the intensity and uniformity was evaluated at different vertical (height) and horizontal (distance) intervals. When the horizontal interval of the LED bar was fixed, the light intensity increased and the uniformity decreased as the height decreased. At the 30~40 cm heights, 20~30% of the area showed $200{\pm}20{\mu}molm^{-2}s^{-1}$. As the horizontal distance of the LED bars increased, while the uniformity increased as well, the light intensity decreased. At the distances of 6~10 cm, 17~23% of the area showed $200{\pm}20{\mu}molm^{-2}s^{-1}$. When the LED bars were added to the sides, the light intensity and uniformity were generally improved. Results showed that the light intensity and uniformity depended on the height and interval of the LED bulbs; therefore, optimum arrangement for the crops interested should be determined through experiments.

  • Biomimetc is a new domain of learning that proposes a solution getting clues from nature. There seems to be a sign of this phenomenon in fields of Renewable Energy. Foe example, Wind power was imitate the whale's fin that was improve efficiency of generating energy. This study focused on the photovoltaic generation as the instance of applying biomimetic. Efficiency is the most important factor in field of Photovoltaic generation. When given solar cell taking the sun light, most important fields of the study are absorb more light and increase the quantity of generation. For improving efficiency, the solar cell were builded up textures of taking a pyramid form, such a surface structure taking a role for remaining the light. This effects do the role as increasing absorbing efficiency. Such phenomenon calls Light Trapping, locking up the light on the surface of solar cell for a long time. Light is a vital factor to plants in the nature. Plants grow up through the photosynthesis that absorbing light for growth and propagation. So, plants make a effort how can absorb more the light in poor surroundings. This study set up a goal that imitates the minute surface structure of plants and applies to the existing solar cells's surface structure, so it can improve the efficiency of absorbing light. We used Light Tools software analyzing geometrical optics to analyze efficiency about new designed textures on the computer. We made a comparison between existing textures and new designed textures. Consequently, new designed textures were advanced efficiency, absorbing rates of light increasing about 7 percent. In comparison with existing and new textures, advancing about 20 percent in the efficient aspect.

  • The number of cases exceeding environmental standards of atmospheric ozone in the major cities in Korea has steadily increased during the past decades. In order to understand and analyze the atmospheric reactions in the atmosphere, especially the secondary photochemical reactions, smog chambers studies have been performed very actively by many research groups worldwide. However, these studies have focused on the mechanism of photochemical reactions in high concentration conditions, not at the ambient levels. Therefore, in-depth studies in these conditions are essentially needed to realize exact mechanism in the atmosphere near the earth surface, especially at Korean atmospheric conditions. In this experiment, the mechanism of photochemical smog was examined through a comparative experiment of smog chambers under sun light and black light conditions. The results of our study indicated that concentrations of ozone, aldehyde, and PAN increased as the radiation of light source increases. Photochemical reaction patterns can be considered quite similar for both black light and sun light experiments. Based on our experiments using toluene as a reactant which is present at significant high levels in ambient air relative to other VOCs, it was found that toluene could contribute notably to oxidize NO to $NO_2$, this reaction can eventually generate some other photochemical oxidants such as ozone, aldehyde, and PAN. The results of simulation and experiments generally showed a good agreement quite well except for the case of $O_3$. The restriction of oxidization of NO to $NO_2$ seems to cause this difference, which is mainly from the reaction of peroxy radical itself and other reactants in the real gas.

  • This paper proposes multiple access method for smart doorlock system using VLC(Visible Light Communication) with color grid modulation method. The proposed method is to connect multiple visible light signals using color grid modulation method in order to recognize and authenticate multiple users accessing doorlock. In order to enable visible light multiple access with existing infrastructure, the symbol energy interval of signal should be maximized. Thus, performance of system in VLC channel is measured by modulating symbols based on the proposed method. We confirm the actual channel test results of the modulated signal to implement doorlock system that recognizes the number of multiple access users.
