  • Dried roots of Paeonia japonica were extracted with dichloromethane, methanol and water aerially. Silica gel column chromatography and thin layer chromatography were used to separate the fractions with antimicrobial activities, and mass spectrometry was used to determine the mass. Dichloromethane extract showed the highest antimicrobial activity. Dichloromethane extract from Paeonia japonica could be a candidate for a new antimicrobial agent against MRSA.

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the various aspects of logico-mathematical thinking and its development by observing a block building activity undertaken by infants and toddlers. The subjects comprised 73 young children from between the ages of 12- to 41-months-old. The interviewee was individually asked to build "something tall", making use of 20 blocks. The results of this study were, first, a regular increase by age is seen in congruence, the vertical use of flat blocks, and innovative ways of using triangular blocks. Second, many types of logico-mathematical thinking processes, such as classification, seriation, spatial relationship and temporal relationship, were shown during the block building activities on the part of the 12- to 41-months-olds who took part in this study.

  • Bioconverted hydroxy fatty acid, docosahexaenoic (bDHA) obtained from the microbial conversion by Pseudomonas aeruginosa PR3 was evaluated for its in vivo anti-fungal activity. bDHA showed great potential of anti-fungal activity against phytopathogenic fungi tested in this study. bDHA at the concentration of 500 ${\mu}g/ml.$ showed remarkable anti-fungal activity against all the fungus tested.

  • Three-Dimensional Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship(QSAR) has been investigated over 67 flavonoids to correlate and predict GI$\sub$50/ values. The partial least-squares(PLS) model was performed to calculate the activity of each derivatives, and this was compared with the actual value. The results of the cross-validated(${\gamma}$$^2$=0.997) values show that cytotoxic activities play an important role which is in good agreement with the observed GI$\sub$50/ values.

  • This study was carried out to develop anticariogenic agents from natural products, the methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of 105 medicinal plants were tested for the antimicrobial activity against a cariogenic bacterium, Streptococcus mutans OMZ 176. Among them, the Aristolochia contorta, Dryopteris crassirhizoma, Eugenia caryophyllata, Hemerocallis fulva, Pinellia ternata, Pyrola japonica, and Scrophularia buergeriana showed significant antimicrobial activity.

  • The methanol extracts of 132 herbal medicines were screened for the inhibitory activity against heparinase enzyme from Flavobacterium heparinum. Eleven medicinal plants, Amomum xanthiodides, Agrimonia pilosa, Paeonia lactiflora, Rubia cordifolia, Sanguisorba officinalis, Torrega grandis, Morus alba, Gleditsia sinensis, Crataegus pinnatifida, Cornus officinalis, Paeonia japonica showed potent inhibition on heparinase activity. The active substituents of those herbal medicine could be extracted into butanol fraction and the inhibitory compounds of Morus alba are now isolating.

  • Ten known compounds, 7-hydroxysauchinone (1), sauchinone (2), di-O-methyltetrahydrofuriguaiacin B (3), henricine (4), saucerneol K (5), meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid (6), (-)-guaiacin (7), (3R,4S)-4-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-4-methoxy-3-methylbutan-2-one (8), (E)-7-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-7-methylbut-8-en-9-one (9), and licarin A (10), were isolated from aerial part of Sarurus chinensis. The chemical structures of these compounds were determined on the basis of spectroscopic analyses including 2D NMR. Compounds 1 - 10 were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against the HL-60, MCF-7, and A549 cancer cell lines in in vitro.

  • Active antibacterial compound against periodontitis-causing bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis was isolated from Kaempferia pandurata and identified as panduratin A. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of panduratin A was $4\;{\mu}g/mL$, much lower than those of other natural antibacterial agents. Panduratin A also showed antibacterial activity against Prevotella intermedia ($2\;{\mu}g/mL$), P. loescheii ($4\;{\mu}g/mL$), and cariogenic Streptococcus mutans ($4\;{\mu}g/mL$). Damage on cell wall and perturbation of cytoplasmic membrane of panduratin A-treated P. gingivalis were visualized through transmission electron microscopy. These results suggest panduratin A, exhibiting strong and preferential antiperiodontal and anticariogenic activities, may be utilized in functional foods for prevention of oral diseases.

  • In search of new antileukopenia agents, twenty dithiolopyrrolone derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for their leukocyte-increasing activities in normal mice. Among the synthesized compounds 4-23, compounds 5 and 6 showed significant leukocyte-increasing activity ( p < 0.01), and compounds 4, 9 and 16 had a moderate effect ( p < 0.05). Compound 5 also displayed stronger leukocyte-increasing activity than that of the positive recombinant human granulocyte colony stimulating factor (rhG-CSF). Above all, compound 5 would be a potential antileukopenia agent which deserved further research.
