In this work, sulfonated poly(phenylene sulfide) (SPPS) was prepared by demethylation with aqueous NaOH solution after poly[methyl[4-(phenylthio)phenyl]sulfonium trifluoromethanesulfonate](PPST) was sulfonated with fumic sulfonic acid(10% $SO_{3}-H_{2}SO_{4}$). PPST soluble in organic solvents was synthesiszed by self-condensation polymerization of methyl-(phenylthio)phenyl sulfoxide(MPPSO). SPPS showed IR bands of asymmetric O=S=O stretching at $1200cm^{-1}$ and S-O stretching at $621cm^{-1}$ from $-SO_{3}H$ group. From the result, it could be known that sulfonic acid groups were introduced to poly(phenylene sulfide). when PPST was sulfonated for 12hr at $150^{\circ}C$, 1.48 sulfonic acid groups were introduced per repeat unit. The weight average molecular weight(Mw) of PPST and SPPS determined by high temperature GPC were 118323 and 131204, respectively. The SPPS exhibited adsorption capacity of ammonia gas $9.67mmol\;NH_{3}/g$ and it was much higher than that of active carbon or silica gel.
The ultraviolet absorption spectra of AcBr lignin (Acetyl Bromide lignin) from 10 species grown in Mt. Jiri were determined. There were 3 peak positions, at 249nm (max peak), at 267-268 nm (shallow min. peak) and at 280 nm (lower max. peak). The Bjorkman lignin and lignin sulfonic acid spectra had shoulders, but the AcBr lignin had not them. Average absorbances and absorptivities of the AcBr lignins at peak positions were $0.367{\pm}0.0015$, $24.56{\pm}0.0535$, at 249 nm, $0.278{\pm}0.0016$, $18.50{\pm}0.0569$, at 267-268 nm and $0.306{\pm}0.0016$, $20.42{\pm}0.0627$ at 280 nm, respectively.
The cause and pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease remain unknown and no definitetherapy exists until now. The present study was conducted to investigate the anti-inflammatory effectsof a herbal preparation (HemoHIM) in colitis induced by 30 mg of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 5 groups. Each group was treated with 1 mg ofHemoHIM/ml of drinking water, 4 mg of HemoHIM/ml of drinking water, 50 mg of HemoHIM/kgof body weight (i.p. once every other day) or 10 mg/kg of HemoHIMof body weight (i.p. onceevery other day) from the next day. After 2 weeks, rats were sacrificed and morphologic featuresof colons were examined. Ulceration, adhesion, thickening and dilatation were noticed in the colonicmucosa after TNBS instillation. Intraperitoneal injection of HemoHIM (50 and 100 mg/kg of bodyweight) showed the anti-inflammatory effect on adhesion, thickening, dilatation, ulceration, and theinhibition effect on damage score by 72.7% and 90.9%, respectively. Histologically, the colon of TNBS-treated rat showed inflammatory cell infiltration by polymorphonuclear cells, multiple erosive lesionsignificant improvement in these symptoms. The results obtained suggest marked anti-inflamatoryactivity of the HemoHIM at the dose levels examined.

We investigated the effects of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS), an amino-group reagent, on the human ether-a-go-go-related gene (HERG) $K^+$ channels expressed in Xenopus oocytes. TNBS neutralizes the positively charged amino-groups of peptide N-terminal and lysine residues. External application of TNBS at 10 mM for 5 min irreversibly shifted the curves for currents at the end of the pulse and tail currents of HERG to a more negative potential and decreased the maximal amplitude of the $I_{tail}$ curve $(I_{tail,max})$. TNBS had little effect on either the activated current-voltage relationship or the reversal potential of HERG current, indicating that TNBS did not change ion selectivity properties. TNBS shifted the time constant curves of both activation and deactivation of the HERG current to a more hyperpolarized potential; TNBS's effect was greater on channel opening than channel closing. External $H^+$ is known to inhibit HERG current by shifting $V_{1/2}$ to the right and decreasing $I_{tail,max}$. TNBS enhanced the blockade of external $H^+$ by exaggerating the effect of $H^+$ on $I_{tail,max}$, not on $V_{1/2}$. Our data provide evidence for the presence of essential amino-groups that are associated with the normal functioning of the HERG channel and evidence that these groups modify the blocking effect of external $H^+$ on the current.
The purpose of this paper is whether or not the in-situ restoration of the reverse osmosis (RO) membranes which its membrane function is lost is possible. The damaged RO membranes are double coated through the salting-out method by the poly(styrene sulfonic acid) sodium salt as the cationic exchange polymer and the polyethyleneimine as the anionic exchange polymer and also conducted the opposite order of the coating materials. And according to the concentration, time and ionic strength, the flux and rejection are measured for the coated membranes. Then the best coating condition is to apply for the RO membrane module of the household water purifier to know the possibility of the in-situ restoration for the commercial module. When the condition of the PEI 30,000 ppm (IS = 0.1)/PSSA 20,000 ppm (IS = 0.7) is applied, the rejection was enhance from 69% for the damaged module to 86% (90% for the pristine module).
The fruits of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus Seeman (Araliaceae) were extracted with 70% aqueous ethanol at room temperature. The concentrated extract was partitioned with ethyl acetate (EtOAc), n-butyl alcohol, and $H_2O$, successively. From the EtOAc fraction, two compounds were isolated through the repeated silica gel, octadecyl silica gel, and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies. According to the results of physicochemical and spectroscopic data including NMR, mass spectrometry, and infrared spectroscopy, the chemical structures of the compounds were determined as 3,5-dihydroxycinnamic acid (1) and protocatechuic acid (2). Compound 1 was isolated from the fruits of A. sessiliflirus Seeman for the first time. And the compounds were evaluated for the radical scavenging the antioxidant capacity using 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)diammonium salt, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazy, and oxygen radical absorbance capacity assay.

This study deals with the preparation of polymeric electrolyte membranes having high durability for the application of fuel cells. The membranes under investigation were prepared the impregnation to porous polyethylene membranes with poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA), poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid), and (PSSA-MA)3-(trihydroxysilyl)-1-propanesulfonic acid (THS-PSA). To characterize the resulting membranes, the water contents, the contact angles, FT-IR, the proton conductivity and the the modulus were measured. The proton conductivity of 30% content of THS-PSA at $55^{\circ}C$ gave excellent $1.27{\times}10^{-1}S/cm$ and the mechanical strength was improved 7 times higher up to the THS-PSA content 15%, as a result, the durability was elevated extensively.
In this study, to improve the water flux of porous hydrophobic membranes, various water-soluble polymers including neutral, cationic and anionic polymers were adsorbed using 'salting-out' method. The adsorbed hydrophobic membrane surfaces were characterized mainly via the measurements of contact angles and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. To enhance the durability of the modified membranes, the water-soluble polymers such poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) and found to be resistant for more than 2 months in vigorously stirred water. The water flux was much more increased when the ionic polymers used as the coating materials rather than the neutral polymer and in this case, about 70% of $0.31L/m^2{\cdot}h$ (LMH) to 0.50 LMH was increased when 300 mg/L of polyacrylamide (PAAm) was used as the coating agents. Among the cationic coating polymers such as poly(styrene sulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSA_MA), poly(acrylic acid-comaleic acid) (PAM) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), PSSA_MA was found to be the best in terms of contact angle and water flux. In the case of PSSA_MA, the water flux was enhanced about 80%. The low concentration of the coating solution was better to hydrophilize while the high concentration inclined to block the pores on the membrane surfaces. The best coating condition was found: (1) coating concentration 150 to 300 mg/L, (2) ionic strength 0.15, (3) coating time 20 min.

It has been shown that the extracts including eupatilin and quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside had mucoprotective effects on the esophagus and stomach through their antioxidant activities. This study was designed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of these flavonoid compounds in an animal model of inflammatory bowel disease induced by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid. Experimental colitis was induced by intracolonic administration of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid. Extracts including eupatilin or quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside were orally administered to animals 48, 24, and 1 h prior to the induction of colitis and then again 24 h later. The animals were sacrificed 48 h after by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid treatment and the macroscopic appearance of the colonic lesions was scored in a blinded manner on a scale of 1 to 10. The inflammatory response to colitis induction was assessed by measuring myeloperoxidase activity, nitric oxide production, tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ expression, total glutathione levels, and malondialdehyde concentrations in the colon. The results indicated that extracts including eupatilin and extracts including quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside dose-dependently improved the morphology of the lesions induced by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid and reduced the ulcer index accordingly. In addition, rats receiving extracts including eupatilin and extracts including quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside showed significantly decreased levels of mucosal myeloperoxidase activity, nitric oxide production, tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ expression, and malondialdehyde levels, and increased total glutathione levels. Extracts including eupatilin and extracts including quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside ameliorated the inflammatory response and colonic injury in acute colitis by decreasing oxidative stress and neutrophil activation. Extracts including eupatilin and extracts including quercetin-3-${\beta}$-D-glucuronopyranoside may inhibit acute colitis.
An eco-friendly energy conversion device without the emission of pollutants has gained much attention due to the rapid use of fossil fuels inducing carbon dioxide emissions ever since the first industrial revolution in the 18th century. Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) that can produce water during the reaction without the emission of carbon dioxide are promising devices for automotive and residential applications. As a key component of PEMFCs, polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) need to have high proton conductivity and physicochemical stability during the operation. Currently, perfluorinated sulfonic acid-based PEMs (PFSA-PEMs) have been commercialized and utilized in PEMFC systems. Although the PFSA-PEMs are found to meet these criteria, there is an ongoing need to improve these further, to be useful in practical PEMFC operation. In addition, the well-known drawbacks of PFSA-PEMs including low glass transition temperature and high gas crossover need to be improved. Therefore, this review focused on recent trends in the development of high-performance PFSA-PEMs in three different ways. First, control of the side chain of PFSA copolymers can effectively improve the proton conductivity and thermal stability by increasing the ion exchange capacity and polymer crystallinity. Second, the development of composite-type PFSA-PEMs is an effective way to improve proton conductivity and physical stability by incorporating organic/inorganic additives. Finally, the incorporation of porous substrates is also a promising way to develop a thin pore-filling membrane showing low membrane resistance and outstanding durability.
