Objectives : The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of Sargassum (Sargassum pallidum (TURN.) C. AG.; SP) on the experimental colitis induced by 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) in mice. Methods : ICR mice were divided into 7 groups (NOR, CON, $SS50\times5$, $SP20\times3$, $SP50\times3$, $SP20\times5$, $SP50\times5$). TNBS processing was intrarectally applied to all experimental groups on the 3rd experiment day, except the normal group (NOR). For investigating the prophylactic effect, SP at doses of 20 mg/kg ($SP20\times5$) and 50 mg/kg ($SP50\times5$) were orally administered for 5 days. The SP at doses of 20 mg/kg ($SP20\times3$) and 50 mg/kg ($SP50\times3$) were orally administered for 3 days after the colitis induction in order to check the effect of treatment. As a positive control group, sulfasalazine 50 mg/kg ($SS50\times5$) was administrated. Macroscopic findings of epithelial tissue on mice were measured by colon length and macroscopic score. Histologic findings were also checked by crypt cell, epithelial cell, inflammatory cell and edema of submucosa. We measured the ability of SP to inhibit lipid peroxidation and myeloperoxidase activity. We also measured levels of the inflammatory markers, interleukin (IL)-$1\beta$ and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), its transcription factor activation, phospho-NF-${\kappa}B$ (pp65), in the colon by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunoblot analysis. We measured activation of fecal bacterial enzyme, $\beta$-glucuronidase and degradation activation of fecal glycosaminoglycan (GAG), and hyaluronic acid. Results : Oral administration of SP on mice inhibited TNBS-induced colon shortening and myeloperoxidase activity in the colon of mice as well as IL-$1\beta$ and COX-2 expression. SP also inhibited TNBS-induced lipid peroxidation and pp65 activation in the colon of mice. SP inhibited $\beta$-glucuronidase activation and fecal hyaluronic acid degradation activation as well. Conclusions : SP could be a possible herbal candidate and preventive prebiotic agent for treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Further experiments to differentiate effects of SP on IBD, such as other solutions and extracting times, might be promising.
The synthesis and the characterization of crosslinked ABC triblock copolymer, i.e. polystyrene-b-poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(styrene sulfonic acid), (PS-b-PHEMA-b-PSSA) is reported. PS-b-PHEMA-b-PSSA triblock copolymer at 20:10:70 wt% was sequentially synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The middle block was crosslinked by sulfosuccinic acid (SA) via the esterification reaction between -OH of PHEMA and -COOH of SA, as demonstrated by FTIR spectroscopy. As increasing amounts of SA, ion exchange capacity (IEC) continuously increased from 2.13 to 2.82 meq/g but water uptake decreased from 181.8 to 82.7%, resulting from the competitive effect between crosslinked structure and the increasing concentration of sulfonic acid group. A maximum proton conductivity of crosslinked triblock copolymer membrane at room temperature reached up to 0.198 S/cm at 3.8 w% of SA, which was more than two-fold higher than that of Nafion 117(0.08 S/cm). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis clearly showed that the PS-b-PHEMA-b-PSSA triblock copolymer is microphase-separated with a nanometer range and well developed to provide the connectivity of ionic PSSA domains. The membranes exhibited the good thermal properties up to $250^{\circ}C$ presumably resulting from the microphase-separated and crosslinked structure of the membranes, as revealed by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA).
A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with poly(p-aminobenzene sulfonic acid) [Poly(p-ABSA)] film is fabricated by voltammetric technique in phosphate buffer solution (pH 8.0) containing $5.0\;{\times}\;10^{-3}\;mol\;L^{-1}$p- ABSA. Electrochemical behaviors of tryptophan at the Poly(p-ABSA) film electrode are investigated with voltammetry. The results indicate that the electrochemical response of tryptophan is improved significantly in the presence of poly(p-ABSA) film. Compared with the bare glassy carbon electrode, the Poly(p-ABSA) film electrode remarkably enhances the irreversible oxidation peak current of tryptophan. Some parameters such as voltammetric sweeping segments for the electrochemical polymerization, pH, accumulation potential and accumulation time are optimized. Under the optimal conditions, the oxidation peak current is proportional to tryptophan concentration in the range of $1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-7}$ to $1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-6}\;mol\;L^{-1}$, and $2.0\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$ to $1.0\;{\times}\;10^{-5}\;mol\;L^{-1}$ with a detection limit of $7.0\;{\times}\;10^{-8}\;mol\;L^{-1}$. The proposed procedure is successfully applied to the determination of tryptophan in a commercial amino acid oral solution.
Itaconic acid has been produced during the cutivation of Aspergillus terreus DSMZ 5770 by using several starchs as carbon sources. The starchs were pretreated by partial hydrolysis with some acids at various pH conditions. The highest yield for the production of itaconic acid has been found when rice starch was pretreated by sulfonic acid at pH 2.5 and utilized for the cultivation. Using the results from shaker fermentation A. terreus has been cultivated in 2.5 L bioreactor for the production of itaconic acid and its on-line monitoring.
In this study, PEO blend fibers mixed with polyaniline (PANI)/10-camphor sulfonic acid (CSA) and PANI/dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA) were electro spun to investigate the influence of PANI content. CSA and DBSA were used as a functionalized doping acid having a bulky volume. PANI/PEO blend solution was prepared by dissolving PEO and PANI doped with CSA or DBSA. The thermal properties were measured by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). As a result, with increasing of the PANI content in PANI/CSA and PANI/DBSA, although initial decomposition temperature (IDT) was decreased, thermal stability was increased due to the increase of $A^*{\cdot}K^*$ and integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT). The electrical conductivities measured by the 4-probe method. The electric conductivity was increased with increasing of PANI content in PANI/CSA and PANI/DBSA. However, electrical conductivity did not change significantly beyond 30% content of PANI. From CV results, PANI/CSA showed the better defined peak shpae and higher peak current density compared to PANI/DBSA. This was probably related to the slightly higher electrical conductivity or better morphology for easy charge transfer in the case of PANI/CSA.
A novel superabsorbent composite was prepared by intercalation polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) in the presence of montmorillonite (MMT), using ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and $N,N'$-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross linker. The superabsorbent composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Maximum absorbency of the composite in distilled water and 0.9% sodium chloride solution was 722 and 108 g/g, respectively. The composite was used for removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Maximum amount of adsorption for $Ni^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Pb^{2+}$ was 211.0, 159.6 and 1646.0 mg/g, respectively, and the adsorption was in accordance with both Langmuir and Freundlich model. The composite could be regenerated and reused in wastewater treatment.
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are probiotics that provide numerous beneficial effects on the host body, especially on the intestine. Combining several strains of LAB, we prepared a formulation containing four different LAB and studied its anti-inflammatory activity both in vitro and in vivo. The formulation significantly reduced NO production from RAW 264.7 cells treated with bacterial lipopolysaccharide, indicating that the formulation might include anti-inflammatory activity. The formulation also suppressed inflammatory change induced by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) in mice, where oral or rectal administration of the formulation protected the colon tissue from the damage by TNBS. Expressions of the IL-6 and FasL genes appeared to be down-regulated by the formulation in TNBS-treated colon tissues, suggesting that the suppression of those genes may be involved in the anti-inflammatory activity of the formulation.
In this study, polyetherimide with pellet state was sulfonated with a chlorosulfonic acid. The volume ratio of carbon tetrachloride (CCI$_4$/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) was 5/1. Therefore, sulfonated polyetherimide of anionic charge and more hydrophilicity were produced. The optimum reaction conditions of sulfonation were that PES/CSA mole ratio was I/I, temperature were lO$^{\circ}$ and reaction time were 3hr. SPEls having ion capacity in the range of 0.2-1.2meq/mg were synthesized. Through FT-IR, sulfonic acid peak was shown at 1020cm$^{-1}$ and 1170cm$^{-1}$ Polymer dispersity index was broad and we confirmed that PEl was hydrophilzed in the measure of contact angle.
The elution behaviors of stannous ion by PSA(phenol sulfonic acid) as an eluent on chelating resin, Amberlite IRC-718 have been investigated. When 0.10 M stannous solution was adsorbed on the resin and eluted with various concentrations of PSA, the two peaks of stannous ion were appeared in the elution curve. These two peak areas were changed according to the PSA concentration. Using these results, the stability constant of the complex formation between Sn2+ and PSA was calculated. This value is 2.0 ${\times}$ 10-1.
