  • Sensor and optical properties have become critical features in powder foundation. The flaky barium sulfate powder shows good smooth texture, adhesion and natural looking characteristics. However, it has limitations abilities in UV shielding, hiding and blooming effect. Thus we adopt TiO$_2$ that has excellent hiding power and blooming effect as well as UV shielding ability, but TiO$_2$ has still intrinsic problems in dispersion and texture. To overcome this disadvantages, the barium sulfate/TiO$_2$/dimethicone composite powder was prepared. The flaky barium sulfate powder was coated with TiO$_2$ in nanoscale and followed by coated with dimethicone. When this surface-modified powder was applied for make-up cosmetics, especially in powder foundation, the powder gave powder foundation more good characteristics than the original flaky barium sulfate, Ti02 powder, dimethicone in abovementioned optical and sensory properties. To characterize the distinctive features of this surface-modified powder, we measured its characteristics with UV in vitro tester, hiding powder test method, goniophotometer, consumer panel test and so on.

  • The binding ability of leaf nuclear extracts to the lighbresponsive elements (LREs) of cab promoters of Arabidopsis thaliana has been investigated. The cab promoters were fragmented with restr ction endonucleases into LRE that were identified by Mitra et al. [Plant Mol. Biol. 12, 169179 ( 1989)] and other small fragments. After end labeling with Klenow fragment, the fragments were assayed for binding with the leaf nuclear proteins that were prepared by solubilizing the purified nuclei with 0.5 M ammonium sulfate. The binding ability was assayed by mobility shift assay. To perform successful mobility shift assay, several factors affecting the interaction of protein with DNA were optimized before performing the assay. The LREs had several retardation bands. However, the other promoter fragments from the transcription start site to the far upstream region of the promoters had also retardation bands. No particular relationships could be found between the retardation band distributions and the loci of LRE. It is likely that the light-regulation of cab gene expression may be controlled by the multiple interactions of the regulatory protein factors with DNA motifs.

  • In the context of artificial groundwater recharge, a reactive soil column at pilot-scale (4.5 m depth and 3 m in diameter) fed by treated wastewater was designed to evaluate soil filtration ability. Here, as a part of this project, the impact of treated wastewater filtration on soil bacterial communities and the soil's biological ability for wastewater treatment as well as the relevance of the use of multi-bioindicators were studied as a function of depth and time. Biomass; bacterial 16S rRNA gene diversity fingerprints; potential nitrifying, denitrifying, and sulfate-reducing activities; and functional gene (amo, nir, nar, and dsr) detection were analyzed to highlight the real and potential microbial activity and diversity within the soil column. These bioindicators show that topsoil (0 to 20 cm depth) was the more active and the more impacted by treated wastewater filtration. Nitrification was the main activity in the pilot. No sulfate-reducing activity or dsr genes were detected during the first 6 months of wastewater application. Denitrification was also absent, but genes of denitrifying bacteria were detected, suggesting that the denitrifying process may occur rapidly if adequate chemical conditions are favored within the soil column. Results also underline that a dry period (20 days without any wastewater supply) significantly impacted soil bacterial diversity, leading to a decrease of enzyme activities and biomass. Finally, our work shows that treated wastewater filtration leads to a modification of the bacterial genetic and functional structures in topsoil.

  • This study investigated the effect of ferrous sulfate (Fe$^{2+}$) and/or ascorbic acid (Asc) on fertilizing ability in vitro of frozen-thawed boar spermatozoa. Using chlortetracycline (CTC) fluorescence, the spermatozoa was treated in preincubation medium with control, Fe$^{2+}$(1 mM), Asc (0.5 mM) and Fe$^{2+}$Asc to assessed for acrosome reaction, and the oocyte penetration test to determine whether the Fe$^{2+}$ and/or Asc can promote the penetration ability in vitro. When frozen-thawed spermatozoa was washed with preincubation medium, there were significantly (P < 0.05) more acrosome-reacted in medium with Fe$^{2+}$Asc (38%) than control (27%). The penetration rates were also significantly (P < 0.05) higher in medium with Fe$^{2+}$Asc (76%) than control (55%). Next, the lipid peroxidation of sperm was evaluated on the basis of malondialdehyde production following same treatments. The addition of Fe$^{2+}$Asc to sperm suspension increases the formation of malondialdehyde. However, there were not significantly different under the all conditions. The sperm suspension were also treated with control, Fe$^{2+}$, Asc and Fe$^{2+}$/Asc and assayed for sulfhydry1(-SH) group content. In the Fe$^{2+}$/Asc group, sperm-SH group were higher than another groups. In spermatozoa treated with Fe$^{2+}$ and/or Asc, however, no changes in sperm -SH-groups were detected when compared to controls. In another experiment, the activity of sperm binding to zona pellucida was evaluated through binding to salt-stored porcine oocytes. In control and Asc treatment groups, sperm binding to zona pellucida were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than in medium with Fe$^{2+}$. On the other hand, there is not a significant increase in binding to zona pellucida with spermatozoa treated by Fe$^{2+}$/Asc. In summary, the present study suggests that Fe$^{2+}$/Asc causes an enhancement in fertilizing ability that is associated with penetration rate increased without change of spermatozoa binding capacity to homologous zona pellucida.o homologous zona pellucida.

  • The lead-acid batteries are the most often used in human life, because of their low cost, good reversibility and high potential but they have limit cycle ability with low capacitance. The main causes of this problem are forming recrystallization of $PbSO_4$ on electrodes surface during cycles which the recrystallization of $PbSO_4$ is known as sulfation. In this study, formation process of sulfation was investigated depending on charge and discharge cycle numbers. And we decomposed sulfation to renew cycle ability of lead-acid batteries. The renewed lead-acid batteries recovered to 84% compared to first capacity after 600 cycles.

  • This study was done to evaluate the dermatoxicity of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) and the protective effect of Rubus parvifolius L. (RP) extract on cytotoxicity of ZnSO4, mordant in cultured SK-MEL-3 cells. For this study, it was done an antioxidative effect as DPPH-radical scavenging ability as well as the diminutive ability of total melanin with cell viability. ZnSO4 significantly decreased cell viability in dose-dependently, and it was mid-toxic. The ascorbic acid significantly increased cell viability damaged by ZnSO4-induced cytotoxicity. In the protective effect of RP extract on ZnSO4-induced cytotoxicity, RP extract significantly increased cell viability compared with ZnSO4-treated group, and also it showed both the DPPH-radical scavenging ability and the decrease of total amount of melanin. From these findings, the cytotoxicity of ZnSO4 is correlated with oxidative stress, and also RP extract effectively protected ZnSO4-induced cytotoxicity via antioxidative effect such as DPPH-radical scavenging ability with the whitening effect by the decrement of total amount of melanin. Conclusively, the natural ingredients like RP extract may be a useful agent for the improvement of antioxidative and whitening effects
