A 16S rDNA polymerase chain reaction assay to detect Mycoplasma pulmonis in rats model

  • Murine mycoplasmosis, caused by Mycoplasma (M.) pulmonis, is a prominent disease in rodent animals. The aim of this study was to develop a sensitive and specific PCR assay to detect M. pulmonis in animals and to assess the suitability of this assay for the detection of mycoplasmal infection in rats experimentally infected with M. pulmonis. A new PCR assay using the M. pulmonis-specific primer pairs MPul-F and MPul-R was developed. The primers and probe for the assay were designed from regions in the 16S rRNA gene that are unique to M. pulmonis. The novel PCR assay was very specific and sensitive for M. pulmonis, detecting the equivalent of 5 pg of target template DNA. It detected only M. pulmonis and no other Mycoplasma species or other bacterial species. The newly developed PCR assay also effectively detected M. pulmonis infection in rats. These results suggest that this PCR assay using M. pulmonis-specific primer pairs of MPul-F and MPul-R will be useful and effective for monitoring M. pulmonis infection in animals.

Extreme Learning Machine Approach for Real Time Voltage Stability Monitoring in a Smart Grid System using Synchronized Phasor Measurements

  • Online voltage stability monitoring using real-time measurements is one of the most important tasks in a smart grid system to maintain the grid stability. Loading margin is a good indicator for assessing the voltage stability level. This paper presents an Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) approach for estimation of voltage stability level under credible contingencies using real-time measurements from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). PMUs enable a much higher data sampling rate and provide synchronized measurements of real-time phasors of voltages and currents. Depth First (DF) algorithm is used for optimally placing the PMUs. To make the ELM approach applicable for a large scale power system problem, Mutual information (MI)-based feature selection is proposed to achieve the dimensionality reduction. MI-based feature selection reduces the number of network input features which reduces the network training time and improves the generalization capability. Voltage magnitudes and phase angles received from PMUs are fed as inputs to the ELM model. IEEE 30-bus test system is considered for demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed methodology for estimating the voltage stability level under various loading conditions considering single line contingencies. Simulation results validate the suitability of the technique for fast and accurate online voltage stability assessment using PMU data.

An evolutionary system for the prediction of high performance concrete strength based on semantic genetic programming

  • High-performance concrete, besides aggregate, cement, and water, incorporates supplementary cementitious materials, such as fly ash and blast furnace slag, and chemical admixture, such as superplasticizer. Hence, it is a highly complex material and modeling its behavior represents a difficult task. This paper presents an evolutionary system for the prediction of high performance concrete strength. The proposed framework blends a recently developed version of genetic programming with a local search method. The resulting system enables us to build a model that produces an accurate estimation of the considered parameter. Experimental results show the suitability of the proposed system for the prediction of concrete strength. The proposed method produces a lower error with respect to the state-of-the art technique. The paper provides two contributions: from the point of view of the high performance concrete strength prediction, a system able to outperform existing state-of-the-art techniques is defined; from the machine learning perspective, this case study shows that including a local searcher in the geometric semantic genetic programming system can speed up the convergence of the search process.

서울지역 강우자료를 이용한 침투량 산정과 사면에서의 침투거동 모의 (Estimation of Infiltration and Simulation of Seepage Behavior in Slope using the Rainfall Data in Seoul)

  • 사면에서의 강우는 경사와 토양의 물리적 성질에 따라 침투와 유출이 분리되게 되는데, 사면 해석에서는 강우가 모두 침투된다는 가정 하에 분석이 이루어져 지하수위가 과대 산정되는 경향이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 서울지점의 강우분석에 이어 해석적 침투모형 중 적용성이 뛰어난 NRCS 모형과 Horton 모형을 이용하여 토양형에 따른 침투량과 유출량을 분리시킨 후, 토양을 분석하였다. 사면의 경사는 국내 설계기준에 의해 많이 적용되는 경사에 대한 단면을 구성하였으며, 산정된 침투량을 바탕으로 경사보정을 한 후 수치해석을 통해 침투거동 및 지하수위양상에 대해 분석하였다. 분석 결과에서 토양형이 D형에서 A형으로 갈수록 지하수위 변화양상이 크게 나타났다.

  • The focus of this research was concerned with studying lower body type for Korean adult females. information from the measuring values based on research on the physical standard of the nation(2004) were summarized, in addition a factor of the need for appropriate fit in boots cut jean wear, basic lower body part applying to each item had to be taken into consideration to enhance sizing suitability. The body type are classified into three kinds by means of factor analysis and cluster analysis. Type 1 referred to the fat lower body, having thick rounding waist. compared to other body parts, and long leg according to its proportion. Type 2 represented medium stature but with a large skeleton structure of lower body. Type 3 represented a the long lower body having slender rounding waist. This study was attempted to evaluate the fitness of boots cut jeans pattern for women using 3D Clothes Modeling Software.

한국 여성복 브랜드의 치수 체계 실태에 관한 연구 (A Study on Actual Condition of Sizing System of Women′s RTW Apparel Brands in Korea)

  • The manufacturer first identifies a target market before developing a sizing chart. A target market is specific for age or figure type. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the suitability of sizing system of women's apparel brand in Korea. For this purpose, the characteristics of the manufacture's sizing chart for jacket and skirt/pants were analyzed. For each brand, the target age of the brand and the age of consumers who preferred that bland were compared. The size charts collected from 27 women's apparel brands were analyzed and compared with Korean industrial standard sifting chart. The results of this study reviled that the body proportion in many manufacturer's sizing chart does not correspond to the body types in Korean industrial standard sizing chart. This trend was apparent for the short figure sizes made for women 155cm in height. There is a difference between the target age in brand concept and the age of consumer preferring to purchase that brand apparel. The age of fitting models usually does not correspond the customer's age. It was concluded that the age of target customer does not go well with the age of brand concept nor the fitting model age caused fit problem of the women's ready-made clothes.

Flexural behaviour of CFST members strengthened using CFRP composites

  • Concrete filled steel tubular members (CFST) become a popular choice for modern building construction due to their numerous structural benefits and at the same time aging of those structures and member deterioration are often reported. Therefore, actions like implement of new materials and strengthening techniques become essential to combat this problem. The application of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) with concrete structures has been widely reported whereas researches related to strengthening of steel structures using fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) have been limited. The main objective of this study is to experimentally investigate the suitability of CFRP to strengthening of CFST members under flexure. There were three wrapping schemes such as Full wrapping at the bottom (fibre bonded throughout entire length of beam), U-wrapping (fibre bonded at the bottom throughout entire length and extended upto neutral axis) and Partial wrapping (fibre bonded in between loading points at the bottom) introduced. Beams strengthened by U-wrapping exhibited more enhancements in moment carrying capacity and stiffness compared to the beams strengthened by other wrapping schemes. The beams of partial wrapping exhibited delamination of fibre and were failed even before attaining the ultimate load of control beam. The test results showed that the presence of CFRP in the outer limits was significantly enhanced the moment carrying capacity and stiffness of the beam. Also, a non linear finite element model was developed using the software ANSYS 12.0 to validate the analytical results such as load-deformation and the corresponding failure modes.

The Theory for Predicting the Moisture Distribution of Stored Grains

  • High moisture content of barley seeds, which were carried to the laboratory within 10 minutes after harvest, were stored in air tight bottle at constant temperature, and the individual moisture contents the grains were measured at predecided tim intervals. The theory of predicting the moisture movement between two kinds of different moisture content grains was tried to apply to the prediction of the moisture distribution and tried to apply to the prediction of the moisture distribution and the comparison of the predicted values with the observed dta showed the good suitability of the theory. The shape of the moisture distribution predicted form the theory were similar to the observed ones for the temperature range of 10 to $50^{\circ}C$. This study will be useful in designing the mix-storage facility or dryer.

Computational evaluation of wind loads on a standard tall building using LES

  • In this paper, wind induced aerodynamic loads on a standard tall building have been evaluated through large-eddy simulation (LES) technique. The flow parameters of an open terrain were recorded from the downstream of an empty boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT) and used to prescribe the transient inlet boundary of the LES simulations. Three different numerically generated inflow boundary conditions have been investigated to assess their suitability for LES. A high frequency pressure integration (HFPI) approach has been employed to obtain the wind load. A total of 280 pressure monitoring points have been systematically distributed on the surfaces of the LES model building. Similar BLWT experiments were also done to validate the numerical results. In addition, the effects of adjacent buildings were studied. Among the three wind field generation methods (synthetic, Simirnov's, and Lund's recycling method), LES with perturbation from the synthetic random flow approach showed better agreement with the BLWT data. In general, LES predicted peak wind loads comparable with the BLWT data, with a maximum difference of 15% and an average difference of 5%, for an isolated building case and however higher estimation errors were observed for cases where adjacent buildings were placed in the vicinity of the study building.

  • When we inject drugstuffs to a patient for a long time, it is important to control proper injection amount and flow rate. Since inproper injection amount and a flow rate would cause bad a recovery a patient, the relience of sensors which detect injection amount is an important factor for whole injection systems' performance. In this research, we've compared the suitability of three sensors for injection pump monitoring system. The three types of sensors, piezo film sensor, photo transistor made up with three transmitting photodiodes and receving photodiode, and photo array, were selected for comparing. Using suggested data processing technique and photo amy sensors, we could minimize the effect of interference, disturbance, illumanation change, and sensitivity change caused by sensor's position. According to the experiments, the photo amy showed the higher reliance than any other the three types of sensors. The developed systems could be the foundation of beginning home production of infusion pump system and available for the base model of whole monitoring and control systems.
