  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that influence depression, suicidal thought, and life satisfaction of Korean elders. Method: The subjects for this study were 219 Korean elders living in three different provinces. The data was collected using structured questionnaires from October through December, 2007. Result: There were statistically significant differences in the levels of depression, suicidal thought, and life satisfaction according to age, health state, sleep state, economic state, feeling of loneliness, feeling of abuse, and having friends or neighbors. Suicidal thoughts correlated less with the above factors than depression did. Depression significantly correlated with age, life satisfaction, loneliness and suicidal thought. Suicidal thought was influenced significantly by depression. Life satisfaction was influenced significantly by depression, health state, and economic state. Conclusion: It could be concluded that nursing interventions for reducing depression and suicidal thought should be developed to improve life satisfaction and the health state of Korean elders as well as to relieve their feelings of loneliness.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in suicidal ideation according to general characteristics, and to identify the associated factors of suicidal ideation in rural elderly. Method: We surveyed 168 elderly people using structured questionnaires from March through April, 2013. Data analy was performed using descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$ test, Fisher's Exact test, and multiple regression using the SPSS program. Results: Significantly differences in suicidal ideation score were observed according to drinking state(p=.036), sleep state(p=.013), health state(p=.020), and stress state(p=.049). The associated factors identified in this study significantly explained 13.2% of suicidal ideation. Smoking and sleep state were the most significant factors of suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Based on these results, development of programs for promotion of psychological health in order to reduce suicide rates of the elderly is urgent. In particular when focusing on relations between sleep disturbance and suicide, it is considered that nursing intervention will be required to promote quality of sleep in clinical practices and communities.

Results: Six of the auxiliary police (3.34%) reported critical scores in suicidal ideation. There was a significant difference in depression according to work area. Self-esteem showed a significant negative correlation with depression (r=-0.38, p<.001) and suicidal ideation (r=-0.39, p<.001). There was a positive correlation between depression and suicidal ideation(r=0.53, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings suggest that auxiliary policemen have higher levels of depression and suicidal ideation. Therefore, further study is needed to develop and examine nursing interventions the enhance self-esteem, so that depression and suicidal ideation can be minimized.

  • Objective : The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship among job stress, depression, and suicidal ideation in firefighters, particularly the mediating effects of depression. Methods : The subjects were 2,136 firefighters in Gangwon-do, who completed the short form of Korean occupational stress scale (KOSS-SF), Korean version of the Beck depression inventory (K-BDI), and the revised scale for suicide ideation (SSI) online in mental health promotion service of firefighters. The data was analyzed with correlation analysis among the variables, and the multiple regression analysis method of Bar-on and Kenny (1986) was used. Results : Job stress showed positive correlations with depression (r=0.493, p <0.01) and suicidal ideation (r=0.296, p<0.01). Depression showed a positive correlation with suicidal ideation (r=0.561, p<0.01). The result of analyzing the mediating effect of depression showed that depression was a full mediator variable between job stress and suicidal ideation. Conclusion : Based on the results, it is very likely that job stress may affect suicidal ideation via depression. These results suggested that the preventive interventions emphasized on depression may be helpful for reduction of suicide in firefighters.

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the state of internet addiction and to investigate the relationships among internet addiction, depression and suicidal ideation in adolescents. Method: Participants were 1,670 high school students in an urban city. The Internet Addiction Scale was used to measure internet addiction, the DISC-MDD-SQ was used to measure depression, and the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire-JR was used to measure suicidal ideation. Result: 38.1 % of participants were perceived to be in the early stages of internet addiction and 1.5% reported heavy addiction. Overall the internet addiction scale score was 37.57(${\pm12.52}$). The differences of internet addiction in sample characteristics were found to be significant in rank in class. The differences in DISC-MDD-SQ and IAS scores among the states of internet addiction were statistically significant. The level of internet addiction correlated positively to the level of depression and suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Based upon these findings, there were significant positive correlations among Internet addiction, depression, and suicidal ideation in adolescents. As schools are often the first line for the identification of potential life-threatening behaviors, nurses, especially school-based health professionals, need to be cognizant of measures and procedures for the assessment of Internet addiction, depression, and suicidal ideation.

  • This study attempted to test the path model that can predict Korean adult suicidal ideation. The subjects were 459 adults aged between 19 and 64 who agreed to this study among quota sampled by the population, sex, and region of the metropolitan city. The path model of collected data was estimated using SPSS 24.0 program and AMOS 22.0. The results of the bias-corrected percentile method for verifying the significance of the mediator effect of the final model showed that suicidal attitude, depression, and stress were found to be mediating effects of health status on suicidal ideation. Suicide attitude and stress were found to mediate the effects of health status on depression. And the effect of drinking on depression was mediated by stress. This result is expected to be used as a practical basis for the development of suicide prevention and intervention programs for adults in the future.

  • This study investigated what factors would affect suicidal ideation of the people who have received public assistance. For the purpose, the survey results of the 7th year(2012) of Korea Welfare Panel Study, which were conducted by Korea Institute for health and Social Affairs and Social Welfare Research Institute of Seoul National University, were used for analysis. In order to figure out the level of influence on the suicidal ideation, a binary logistic regression analysis using a binary logistic model was used as an analysis method. As a result, it was found that when the subjects are middle school graduates, and if they are married, there are low suicidal ideation. Also, the higher their self-esteem is and the higher their satisfaction with public assistance, the lower there they have suicidal ideation. Furthermore, it was proved that if they have depression, or in middle age, they have high possibility of suicidal ideation. It was proved that satisfaction with public assistance also can have influence on the suicidal ideation of the poor class, not only physical and psychological factors. Therefore, measuring the satisfaction of the recipients with public assistance can be one of the significant factors that affects suicidal ideation.

  • Objective : This study aims to examine the association between exposure to suicide events and suicide ideation by analyzing the levels of suicide ideation among the groups with exposure to suicide death, non-suicide death, and no death in their social relationships. Methods : Data were derived from Wave I of the Longitudinal Study of Suicide Survivors' Mental Health. 1,998 adults nationwide selected using a stratified sampling method based on the Korean Census Data, were categorized into 3 groups with exposure to suicidal death, non-suicidal death, and no death. The levels of depression (Brief CES-D), subjective health status, and suicidal ideation (SSI) were measured. To examine the association between exposure to suicide and the level of suicide ideation, multiple regression analysis was used after controlling the socio-demographic and clinical factors including subjective health status and depression. Results : 32% reported their exposure to suicide. Compared to the other groups, the suicide-exposed group's level of depression and suicide ideation were significantly higher but the subjective health status was lower. Multiple regression model revealed that suicide exposure had a statistically significant association with suicidal ideation at p=0.000 even after controlling the clinical characteristics. Conclusion : HThe findings suggest that exposure to suicide is a risk factor for suicidal ideation. In the clinical field, it is necessary to consider patients' experience in exposure to suicide while treating and intervening in suicide-related cases. At the policy level, a mental health system for suicide prevention should consider this risk factor for those exposed to suicide in their family and social relationships.
