  • A method of detecting abnormal spikes occuring in the EEG of subjects suffering from epilepsy is studied. The detection scheme is to take the first derivative of EEG and to determine if it exceed some threshold value. This study is focused on the digital signal processing for detecting abnormal spikes using microcomputer.

  • When we follow the lines of the trajectory of photons which intersect the circle, the circle may suffer some deformation as approaching to the observer. We consider an infinitesimal light bundle suffering gravitational bending. We examine the deformation of the deflected light bundle due to the gravitational lens. The size of the deformation is expressed in terms of the focal length of the gravitational lens.

  • A total of 204 strains of Staphylococcus hyicus subsp. hyicus isolated from piglets suffering from exudative epidermitis and healthy pigs were tested for antibiotic susceptibility. The growth of all isolates of Staph. hyicus subsp. hyicus tested was inhibited by cloxacillin(Cx) at a concentration of $0.8{\mu}g/ml$ and by cefazolin (Cf) at a concentration of $0.4{\mu}g/ml$, and by gentamicin and methicillin at a minimum inhibitory concentration of $3.2{\mu}g/ml$. Of total isolates obtained from the diseased and healthy pigs, 69.6% were resistant to penicillin G, 53.4% to tetracycline, 11.8% to kanamycin and 0.5% to chloramphenicol, with considerable variations among farms in the occurrence of resistant strains and resistance patterns to the drugs. By application of Cx or Cf which was active to the organism, piglets exposed to infection were successfully protected from the disease, but piglets suffering from already severe exudative epidermitis did not respond to treatment.

  • In this paper, we propose a dual-phase approach to improve the process of heart disease prediction in a mobile environment. Firstly, only the confident frequent rules are extracted from a patient's clinical information. These are then used to foretell the possibility of the presence of heart disease. However, in some cases, subjects cannot describe exactly what has happened to them or they may have a silent disease - in which case it won't be possible to detect any symptoms at this stage. To address these problems, data records collected over a long period of time of a patient's heart rate variability (HRV) are used to predict whether the patient is suffering from heart disease. By analyzing HRV patterns, doctors can determine whether a patient is suffering from heart disease. The task of collecting HRV patterns is done by an online artificial neural network, which as well as learning knew knowledge, is able to store and preserve all previously learned knowledge. An experiment is conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed heart disease prediction process under different settings. The results show that the process's performance outperforms existing techniques such as that of the self-organizing map and gas neural growing in terms of classification and diagnostic accuracy, and network structure.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe life-stories and meanings of life in wives of alcoholics by analyzing their autobiographies. Methods: Autobiographies were collected from 20 participants who produced their own autobiographies in the logotherapeutic autobiography program at community alcohol counseling centers in Korea. The data were coded to identify themes of agency and communion using the manual coding system developed by McAdams, and analyzed by the existential approach. Results: There were 214 coded episodes in twenty autobiographies. There were 128 agency themes and 86 communion themes. The most common themes were Love/Friendship. Five themes emerged from the autobiographical episodes on the existential perspective: 1) overcoming the suffering, 2) meaningful people and relationships, 3) spiritual maturation, 4) caring and helping, and 5) finding a meaning of life. Conclusion: These results showed that the wives of alcoholics who participated in the logotherapeutic autobiography program found the meaning of life through their suffering. Furthermore, a study on existential nursing interventions for people who have meaninglessness in life needs to be done.
