  • The primary goal of this research is to investigate flow separation phenomena using various turbulence models. Also investigated are the effects of free-stream turbulence intensity on the flow over a NACA 0018 airfoil. The flow field around a NACA 0018 airfoil has been numerically simulated using RANS at Reynolds numbers ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 and angles of attack (AoA) ranging from 0° to 18° with various inflow conditions. A parametric study is conducted over a range of chord Reynolds numbers for free-stream turbulence intensities from 0.1 % to 0.5 % to understand the effects of each parameter on the suction side laminar separation bubble. The results showed that increasing the free-stream turbulence intensity reduces the length of the separation bubble formed over the suction side of the airfoil, as well as the flow prediction accuracy of each model. These models were used to compare the modeling accuracy and processing time improvements. The K- SST performs well in this simulation for estimating lift coefficients, with only small deviations at larger angles of attack. However, a stall was not predicted by the transition k-kl-omega. When predicting the location of flow reattachment over the airfoil, the transition k-kl-omega model also made some over-predictions. The Cp plots showed that the model generated results more in line with the experimental findings.

  • Background : This study aimed at identifying the effect of the standardized protocol on lowering the incidence of the ventilator associated pneumonia(VAP). Methods : The standard protocol focusing on decreasing VAP was made and applied at 5 ICUs (Medical ICU, surgical ICU, Respiratory ICU, Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU) in a university affiliated tertiary hospital, from April 1, 2000 to Oct 31, 2000. The protocol involved 3 parts : hand washing, the suctioning method and ventilator circuit management. All the nursing personnel received intensive education which was consisted of lecture, video film and demonstration. 176 nurses reported the performance of handwashing pre and post intervention. And randomly selected 15 nurses were observed by charge nurse and the handwashing practice was analyzed pre and post intervention. The incidence of VAP was compared with the former year incidence. Results : The self reported frequency of hand washing increased. In the direct observation of handwashing, the frequency, time, thoroughness of hand washing during 8 hours day duty was found to be improved. The frequency was increased from 1.1 time to 4.1 times; the time was improved from 1.7 seconds to 5.7 seconds and the thoroughness of the washing practice was from 0.2 times to 3.0 times respectively (p<0.001). The incidence of VAP decreased from at a rate of 15.63 number of case per 1,000 ventilator-day (April 1~August 31, 1999) to 7.23 number of case per 1,000 ventilator-days(April 1~Oct 31, 2000)(P<0.001). Conclusion : We developed the protocols which included hand washing, the suctioning method, and ventilator circuit management. Through the implementation of the protocol, the performance of hand washing improved and the VAP incidence rate in ICU was decreased.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the volumetric water content of unsaturated soils during drying and wetting process by using volumetric pressure plate extractor (VPPE) incorporated with time domain reflectometry (TDR). The VPPE consists of a pressure cell, a pressure regulator, a burette system and a TDR probe. Two samples with different initial void ratios were prepared in the pressure cell, and the air pressure at the range of 0.1 kPa - 50 kPa was applied to adjust the matric suction by the pressure regulator. The burette system was used to measure the volumetric water content change of the sample according to the matric suction. In addition, the TDR probe, installed in the cell, was used to evaluate the dielectric constant from the reflected signal of the electromagnetic wave at the probe. The volumetric water content of specimen was estimated by the empirical equation between the volumetric water content and dielectric constant, which was calibrated with the Jumunjin sand. The test results show that the volumetric water content calculated by TDR probe is strongly correlated to the measured value by burette system. The hysteresis occurs during drying and wetting process. Furthermore, the degree of hysteresis reduces in the repeated process. This study suggests that TDR may be effectively used to evaluate the water content soil for the determination of water characteristic curve of unsaturated soils.

  • Performance tests of a turbopump for the developing 7-tonf liquid rocket engine were conducted. The performance of turbopump components and their power matching were measured and examined firstly under the LN2 and water environment. In the real propellant(LOX and kerosene) environment tests, design and off-design performances of turbopump were fully verified. During the off-design tests, turbopump running time was set the same as engine operating time and pump inlet pressure were set lower than nominal operating value in order to investigate pump suction capability. It have been verified that subject turbopump satisfies required performance - flow rate, head, suction performance and operational time - in the operating regime of developing liquid rocket engine.

  • When more parts are mounted in the same time in a surface mount equipment, the total output will increase and will improve productivity. In this paper, we propose a method to reduce the gantry drive time from the suction to the mounting of the component to improve the productivity of the surface mount equipment. The method was to find a way to get the maximum velocity in front of the camera during the vision inspection. In this paper, we have developed a stop-motion, fly1-motion, and fly2-motion drive time calculation algorithms for vision inspection and calculated the driving time of 3 methods and compared them. As a result, the fly1-motion method shortened the time by 13% and the fly2-motion method shortened the time by 18% than the stop-motion method.

  • Influence of changing combustor pressure on flame stabilization and emission index in the swirl-stabilized flame was investigated. The combustor pressure was controlled by suction fan at combustor exit. Pressure index ($P^{\ast}$=Pabs/Patm), where Pabs and Patm indicated the absolute pressure and atmosphere pressure, respectively, was controlled in the range of 0.7${\sim}$1.3 for each equivalence ratio conditions. The flammable limits of swirl flames were largely influenced by changing combustor pressure and they showed similar tendency with laminar flames. NOx emission index decreased with decreasing pressure index for overall equivalence ratio conditions. R.m.s. of pressure fluctuations is increased with decreasing combustor pressure. This flame fluctuation caused incomplete combustion, hence CO emission index increased. These oscillating flames were measured by simultaneous $CH^{\ast}$ chemiluminescence time-series visualization and pressure fluctuation measurement.

  • In this study, a series of experiment was carried to improve dewaterability of the sludge produced in a treatment plant, located in Hongcheon, Gangwondo, which has been treating municipal wastewater and livestock wastewater. Optimum sludge mixing ratio and the amount of sludge conditioner were determined. As sludge conditioners, alum and ferric salt were selected and tested. For the measurement of sludge dewaterability, capillary suction time(CST) and the specific resistance were measured, The specific resistance was detemined by running a series of Buchner Funnel Test. Mixing the two sludges at a 50:50 ratio with the addition of 20 mL alum gave the best results in terms of dewaterability. The moisture content decreased by 2% at this condition.

  • This paper deals with a defect classification technique that considers the structural characteristics of a refrigerant compressor. First, the pressure pulsation of the refrigerant flowing in the suction pipe of a normal compressor was measured at the same time as the acceleration of the shell surface, and then the transfer function between the two signals was estimated. Next, the frequency-weighted acceleration signals of the defect classification target compressors were generated using the estimated transfer function. The estimation of the variance of the transfer function is presented to formulate the frequency-weighted acceleration signals. The estimated frequency-weighted accelerations were applied to defect classification using frequency-domain features. Experiments were performed using commercial compressors to verify the technique. The results confirmed that it is possible to perform an effective defect classification of the refrigerant compressor by the shell surface acceleration of the compressor. The proposed method could make it possible to improve the total inspection performance for compressors in a mass-production line.

  • The injection molding technique is a processing method widely used for the production of plastic parts. In this study, the gate position, gate size, packing time, and melt temperature were optimized to minimize both the stress and deformation that occur during the injection molding process of medical suction device components. We used a central composite design and Latin hypercube sampling to acquire the data and adopted the response surface method as an approximation method. The efficiency of the optimization of the injection molding problem was determined by comparing the results of a genetic algorithm, sequential quadratic programming, and a non-dominant classification genetic algorithm.

  • Conservative management of 3 iatrogenic perforations of intrathoracic esophagus was reviewed. The primary disorders were achalasia in 2 patients and congenital tracheoesophageal fistula in 1 patient. Perforation occurred after treatment of the primary disorders in the distal esophagus in 2 patients and mid-thoracic esophagus in 1 patient. All the perforations appeared late after the previous treatments and the inflammation spread to mediastinum and pleural cavity in all the 3 patients. Conservative management of esophageal perforation was carried out with intraluminal drainage from the perforated site of esophagus[insertion of Levin`s tube and continuous suction], pleural drainage and feeding of liquid diet through gastrostomy tube with Fowler`s position. The patients revealed spontaneous closure of perforated sites about 3 to 4 weeks after this conservative management without open thoracotomy. This result suggests that this conservative management may be accepted as therapeutic method in the thoracic esophageal perforations regardless of cause and time of the perforation.
