PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the potential risk level of road cave-ins due to subsurface cavities based on the deflection basin measured with falling weight deflectometer (FWD) tests. METHODS: Ground penetrating radar (GPR) tests were conducted to detect road cavities. Then FWD tests were conducted on 13 pavement test sections with and without a cavity. FWD deflections and a deflection ratio was used to evaluate the effect of geometry of the cavity and pavement for road cave-in potentials. RESULTS : FWD deflection of cavity sections measured at 60 cm or a closer offset distance to a loading center were 50% greater than more robust sections. The average deflection ratio of the cavity sections to robust sections were 1.78 for high risk level cavities, 1.51 for medium risk level cavities, and 1.16 for low risk level cavities. The relative remaining service life of pavement with a cavity evaluated with an surface curvature index (SCI) was 8.1% for the high level, 21.8% for the medium level, and 89.8% compared to pavement without a cavity. CONCLUSIONS : FWD tests can be applied to detect a subsurface cavity by comparing FWD deflections with and without a cavity measured at 60 cm or a closer offset distance to loading center. In addition, the relative remaining service life of cavity sections based on the SCI can used to evaluate road cave-in potentials.

Ground cave-in is usually initiated by the formation of cavity within the ground due to soil loss. When the location of the cavity is deep in the ground, the detection of the cavity is not easy. Then it is possible that the hidden cavity expands for a long time to eventually cause sudden large-scale collapse. A case of large scale ground collapse in the old fill ground was studied and described in this paper. The underground cavity appeared to be caused by subsurface erosion deep in the ground and to expand/extend upward till it was ended by the catastrophic ground failure. It highlighted the importance of proper drainage work in a large scale land fill.

In this paper, a feasibility on a ground-penetrating radar for detecting subsurface cavities near buried pipes has been investigated. The experimental setup was implemented by employing an impulse ground-penetrating radar system, a xy Cartesian coordinate robot, an underground material filled tank, a metal pipe and a simulated cavity model. In particular, the simulated cavity model was constructed by packing Styrofoam chips and balls, which have both similar electrical properties to an air-filled cavity and a solid shape. Through typical three experiments, B-scan data of the radar have been acquired and displayed as 2-D gray-scale images. According to the comparison of B-scan images, we show that the subsurface cavities near the buried pipes can be detected by using the radar survey.
seismic crosshole tomography works applying borehole deviation correction were performed at a test site to detect a small cavity. Two correction methods were applied. The one is the constant distance correction which adds constant distance to surface borehole distance and the other is the constant angle correction which considers an angle between surface borehole location and bottom borehole location. After applying the corrections, the distortions of the image diminished while its resolution improved. Though the constant angle correction is the most appropriate correction method, the constant distance correction can delineate the small cavity sufficiently.
Borehole radar is one kind of GPR, but it can be used in deep boreholes, and it has many advantages compared with low frequency borehole EM tools, and surface GPR. We have developed various techniques on borehole radar for environment study. The hardware development includes broadband radar system with the functions of polarimetry and inteferometry. By using these systems, we tested the measurements to applications such as subsurface fracture characterization, subsurface cavity detections. In this paper, we will describe the advantages of the advanced radar technology for environment studies, and show some experiment results.
In order to analyze ground relaxation and cavity formation mechanism due to deteriorated sewer pipe, field test was carried out and a numerical assessments were compared with the field test results. An artificial underground cavity was intended using the ice block overlaying the buried pipe and confirmed that the cavity and relaxation of the surrounding ground were gradually formed as the ice block starts to melt down. Such mechanism was highly suspected to be involved with soil particle interlocking as a soil compaction was a typical process for the buried pipes. In exploring such mechanism numerically, commercially available DEM (Discrete Element Method) code PFC2D was used and the interlocking induced cavern behaviors were successfully simulated and compared with field test results by utilizing the clump logic imbedded in PFC code.

There is no adverse opinion on the anticariogenic effect of fluoride, so glass ionomer restoration which release the fluoride is recommended fer child patient. To study the anticariogenic effect of initial carious lesion of fluoride released from adjacent glass ionomer restoration, the in situ model was constructed. A microhardness test, polarized scope investigation and electron probe microanalysis was done for analyzing the distribution of fluoride which was precipitated from glass ionomer restoration to the enamel caries lesion. Fuji IX, the conventional glass ionomer, was used for experimental group and Z-100, composite resin that fluoride was not contained, was used for control group. On the microhardness test, the remineralization was accelerated by fluoride. And on the polarized investigation, the size of caries lesion was reduced in the oral cavity and that phenomenon was accelerated by fluoride, too. Electron probe microanalysis shows that the remineralization was accelerated by fluoride and the fluoride concentration on subsurface area was increased. It maybe that the subsurface area was critical to anticariogenic effect. In summary of these result, initial caries lesion can be remineralized in the oral cavity and that phenomenon can be accelerated by fluoride. The subsurface area of caries lesion was a major part of defense to cariogenic invasion and to conserve the subsurface area, the surface of lesion body have to conserved.
Recently, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys have been actively carried out for precise subsurface void investigation because of the rapid increase of subsidence in urban areas. However, since the interpretation of GPR data was conducted based on the interpreter's subjective decision after applying only the basic data processing, it can result in reliability problems. In this research, to solve these problems, we analyzed the difference between the events generated from subsurface voids and those of strong diffraction sources such as the buried pipeline by applying the edge detection technique, which is one of image processing technologies. For the analysis, we applied the image processing technology to the GRP field data containing events generated from the cavity or buried pipeline. As a result, the main events by the subsurface void or diffraction source were effectively separated using the edge detection technique. In addition, since subsurface voids associated with the subsidence has a relatively wide scale, it is recorded as a gentle slope event unlike the event caused by the strong diffraction source recorded with a sharp slope. Therefore, the directional analysis of amplitude variation in the image enabled us to effectively separate the events by the subsurface void from those by the diffraction source. Interpretation based on these kinds of objective analysis can improve the reliability. Moreover, if suggested techniques are verified to various GPR field data sets, these approaches can contribute to semiautomatic interpretation of large amount of GPR data.

In this study, we conducted geophysical investigations for the organization of integrated geophysical methods to detect underground cavities of ground subsidence area at the field test site, located at Yongweol-ri, Muan-gun. We examined the applicability of geophysical methods such as electrical resistivity, electromagnetic, and microgravity to cavity detection with the aid of borehole survey results. Underground cavities are widely present within the limestone bedrock overlain by the alluvial deposits in the area of the test site where the ground subsidences have occurred in the past. The limestone cavities are mostly filled with groundwater and clays in the test site. Thus, cavities have low electrical resistivity and density compared to the surrounding host bedrock. The results of the study have shown that the zones of low resistivity and density correspond to the zones of the cavities identified in the boreholes at the site, and that the geophysical methods used are very effective to detect underground cavities. Furthermore, we could map the distribution of cavities more precisely with the test results incorporated from the various geophysical methods. It is also important to notice that the microgravity method is a very promising tool since it has rarely used for the cavity detection in korea. Beyond the investigation of underground cavities, the geophysical methods are required to provide useful information for the reinforcement design for the ground subsidence areas. It is, therefore, necessary to develop integrated geophysical technique incorporating different geophysical methods to precisely map underground cavities and image the subsurface of the ground subsidence areas.
