  • One major advantage of ground penetrating radar (GPR) over other field test methods is its ability to obtain subsurface images of roads in an efficient and non-intrusive manner. Not only can the strata of pavement structure be retrieved from the GPR scan images, but also various irregularities, such as cracks and internal cavities. This article introduces a deep learning-based approach, focusing on detecting subsurface cracks by recognizing their distinctive hyperbolic signatures in the GPR scan images. Given the limited road sections that contain target features, two data augmentation methods, i.e., feature insertion and generation, are implemented, resulting in 9,174 GPR scan images. One of the most popular real-time object detection models, You Only Learn One Representation (YOLOR), is trained for detecting the target features for two types of subsurface cracks: bottom cracks and full cracks from the GPR scan images. The former represents partial cracks initiated from the bottom of the asphalt layer or base layers, while the latter includes extended cracks that penetrate these layers. Our experiments show the test average precisions of 0.769, 0.803 and 0.735 for all cracks, bottom cracks, and full cracks, respectively. This demonstrates the practicality of deep learning-based methods in detecting subsurface cracks from GPR scan images.

  • The 3D geospatial modeling of geotechnical information can aid in understanding the geotechnical characteristic values of the continuous subsurface at construction sites. In this study, a geostatistical optimization model for the three-dimensional (3D) mapping of subsurface stratification and the SPT-N value based on a trial-and-error rule was developed and applied to a dam emergency spillway site in South Korea. Geospatial database development for a geotechnical investigation, reconstitution of the target grid volume, and detection of outliers in the borehole dataset were implemented prior to the 3D modeling. For the site-specific subsurface stratification of the engineering geo-layer, we developed an integration method for the borehole and geophysical survey datasets based on the geostatistical optimization procedure of ordinary kriging and sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS) by comparing their cross-validation-based prediction residuals. We also developed an optimization technique based on SGS for estimating the 3D geometry of the SPT-N value. This method involves quantitatively testing the reliability of SGS and selecting the realizations with a high estimation accuracy. Boring tests were performed for validation, and the proposed method yielded more accurate prediction results and reproduced the spatial distribution of geotechnical information more effectively than the conventional geostatistical approach.

  • Laboratory experiment of polarimetric GPR measurement was conducted for the purpose of estimating subsurface inhomogeneity. Tow realization of inhomogeneous subsurface media were made by burying stone objects of different dimensions in homogeneous dry sand. Polarization ratio of cross polarization to co polarization data were examined to find their obviously distinguishable behavior.

  • The subsurface damaged layer in ultraprecisison machined single crystal Ge was examined by ion channeling. Single crystal Ge surfaces were prepared by chemo-mechanical polishing, mechanical polishing with 1/4 gm diamond abrasive, single point diamond turning and ultraprecision orthogonal flycutting. The extent of subsurface lattice disorder was compared to the crystal's orginal surface quality. Ion channeling is seen to be useful for quantitative measure of lattice disorder in finely finished surfaces.

  • This study introduces a simulation model of radar responses with frequencies on subsurface voids in concrete. In this model, the resolution and the attenuation according to radar frequencies in each interface which has different electromagnetic property are analyzed. This model aims to select the best frequency of radar which can analyze the thickness of voids in concrete from radar response. It also can be applied to estimate the limitation of propagation depth of radar on subsurface voids in concrete. The computed results show the radar images based on radar signal processing using convolution technique.

  • A linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis of double subsurface cracks propagation in a half-space subjected to moving thermomechanical surface traction was performed using the finite element method. The effect of frictional heat at the sliding surface on the crack growth behavior is analyzed in terms of the thermal load and peclet number. The crack propagation direction is predicted in light of the magnitudes of the maximum shear and tensile stress intensity factor ranges. When moving thermomechanical surface traction exists, subsurface horizontal cracks are propagation in-plane crack growth rate at the beginning but they are propagation out-of-plane crack growth rate by the frictional heat which is occurrence by the repeated sliding contact.

  • In order to study the characteristics of the subsurface vortex the flow fields of the three pump sump models were analysed by the numerical simulation. The calculation results show that there are circulation flows in the pump sump model and maximum vorticity strength which make iso-surface from the wall to the pump inlet could be used for predicting the subsurface vortex generation. Also, the flow field for the sump model with anti-vortex devices simulated and the results shows that there is no vorticity value which make iso-surface from the sump wall to the pump inlet.

  • Accurate stress intensity factor analyses and crack growth rate of surface -cracked components in inhomogeneous materials are needed fur reliable prediction of their fatigue life and fracture strengths. This paper describes an automated stress intensity factor analysis of three-dimensional (3D) cracks in inhomogeneous materials. 3D finite element method (FEM) was used to obtain the stress intensity factor fur subsurface cracks and surface cracks existing in inhomogeneous materials. To examine accuracy and efficiency of the present system, the stress intensity factor for a semi-elliptical surface crack in a plate subjected to uniform tension is calculated, and compared with Raju-Newman's solutions. Then the system is applied to analyze cladding effect of subsurface cracks in inhomogeneous materials. The results were compared with those surface cracks in homogeneous materials. It is clearly demonstrated from these analyses that the stress intensity factors for subsurface cracks are less than those of surface cracks. Also, this system is applied to analyze cladding effect of surface cracks in inhomogeneous materials.
