  • The development of severe pericardial adhesion after cardiovascular surgical procedures often increases the risk of injuring the heart, great vessels, or extracardiac grafts during resternotomy. Several pericardial substitutes have been tested in an attempt to facilitate reoperation with inconclusive results. This study was designed to evaluate the applicability of two different materials as pericardial substitutes to minimize the pericardial adhesion and epicardial reaction. A procedure for induction of pericardial adhesion was carried out in 30 rabbits. Rabbits were divided into three groups of ten rabbits each: Group 1[control, simple pericardial closure]: Group 2[bovine pericardium as pericardial substitute]: Group 3[e-polytetrafluoroethylene surgical membrane, e-PTFE as a pericardial substitute]. Bovine pericardium or e-PTFE surgical membrane was interposed between the sternum and the heart. Rabbits were sacrificed at 4 weeks after operation. The development of adhesions and epicardial reactions were graded as: none [I]; minimal[II]; moderate[Ill]; and severe[1V]. Histologic studies of the substitute, the pericardium, and the epicardium were performed. The results were as follows; l. In group 1[control group], the degree of pericardial adhesions were grade I in none, grade II in 1, grade III in 3, and grade 1V in 6 animals. Epicardial reactions were grade I in none, grade II in 3, grade K in 4, grade 1V in 3 animals respectively. 2. In group 2[bovine pericardium], the degree of pericardial adhesions were grade I in 1, grade II in 5, grade III in 3, and grade 1V in 1 animal. Epicardial reactions were grade I in 1, grade II in 2, grade III in 4, and grade 1V in 3 animals respectively. 3. In group 3[e-PTFE], the degree of pericardial adhesions were grade I in 7 animals, grade II in 2, grade III in 1, and grade g in none. Epicardial reactions were grade I in 4, grade II in 3, grade III in 2, and grade IV in 1 animal respectively. Pericardial adhesions more than grade II were 90.9% in group 1, 40 % in group 2, and 10% in group 3. Pericardial adhesions were significantly reduced in group 3 compared to group 1 or 2. Epicardial reactions more than grade II were 70 % in group 1, 70 % in group 2 and 30 % in group 3. We concluded that this 0.1mm thick polytetrafluoroethylene surgical membrane is a suitable pericardial substitute to minimize the development of pericardial adhesion or epicardial reaction following cardiovascular surgery.

  • It is well known that the speed of induction motor can be controlled in wide range by changing the second exciting e.m.f. of rotor circuit, but that is well not practised because of its complicated system. In order to simplify such a system, the Kramer system of which silicon rectifier substitutes for synchronous converter has analyzed in this paper. The result of this investigation show that in this system, only the equivlent synchronous speed it changed by second exciting e.m.f., but the mechanical output power, torque and power factor is not changed, and that this system is able to compensate the regulated speed on account of the load changed.

  • Added variable plot and component-plus-residual plot are very useful for studying the role of a predictor in classical regression analysis. The former is usually used to check the effect of adding a new variable to existing model. The latter has been suggested as computationally convenient substitutes for the added variable plots, however, this plot is found to be better in detecting nonlinear relationships of a new predictor. By combining these two plots dynamically, we can take advantages of two plots simultaneously. And even further, we can get some knowledge of collinearity between a new predictor and predictors already in the model, and more accurate information about the possible outliers.

  • Six N-substituted-5-hydroxyanthranilic acids were synthesized by the coupling reaction of 5-tosyloxyanthranilic acid ethyl ester with corresponding acid chlorides. The structure of the obtained compounds was proved by NMR and IR. These compounds did not inhibit the growth of micro-organisms while suppressed HSV-1 replication in vero cell at 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml.

  • Polyvinylalcohol (PVA) is a crystalline polymer, capable of hydrogen bonding, which makes the polymer useful for many industrial applications. production of high strength fibers, medical substitutes, adhesives, and so on[1], Specially, among fiber-forming polymers, PVA has the second highest crystal modulus and extreme strength after polyethylene because the polymer chain can take a planar zig-zag conformation. • This type of polynomial is a generating function that substitutes eλt for et in the denominator of the generating function for the Bernoulli polynomial, but polynomials by using this generating function has interesting properties involving the location of the roots. We define these generation functions and observe the properties of the generation functions.

  • Music industry confronts turbulent change through the explosive usage of internet in downloading music files by consumers. Internet substitutes traditional music distributional channel and develops new digital music market. This study examines what change has been brought to music industry in both domestic market and global market by the usage of internet. The study also discusses some cases and legal issues in digital music industry.

  • Since its introduction in 1993, Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) has been shown to be superior to others in sealing, biocompatibility, and many other aspects of clinical endodontics. MTA is primarily Portland cement with bismuth oxide as a radiopacitifier. Although some studies suggested that the reasonable-priced Portland cement could be used instead of MTA, but MTAs are different from Portland cement in its composition, especially in heavy metal contents. Therefore, clinicians should be meticulous adapting the Portland cement as a MTA substitute.

  • Before resin composites can serve as durable substitutes for amalgam restorations, the adhesive system used to retain them and add to seal dentin must be improved. The recent observations, using the newly developed LVDT (linear variable differential transformer) probe, that all commercial bonding systems cause a collapse of the demineralized dentin matrix, simulated a re-evaluation of the effects of these formulations on the matrix. The experiment was begun by examining solvents such as water-HEMA mixtures. These produced the same shrinkages as did the complete formulations.(omitted)
