  • Applications involving moving objects require index structures to handle frequent updates of objects' locations efficiently. Several methods to index the current, the past and the future positions of moving objects have been proposed for the applications. Most of them are based on R-tree like index structures. Some researches have made efforts to improve update performance of R-trees that are actually focused on query performance. Even though the update performance is improved by researchers' efforts, the overhead and immaturity of concurrency control algorithms of R-trees makes us hesitate to choose them for moving objects. In this paper, we propose an update efficient indexing method that can be applicable for indexing the past, the current and the future locations. The proposed index is based on B+-Trees and Hilbert curve. We present an advanced Hilbert curve that adjusts automatically the order of Hilbert curve in subregions according to the data distribution and the number of data objects. Through empirical studies, we show that our strategy achieves higher response time and throughput.

  • The main difficulty in estimating the fundamental matrix stems from the unavoidable outliers inherent in the given correspondence matches. Several researches showed that the estimation results are much dependent on selecting the corresponding points. These represent that it is important to solve the problems due to errors on the point locations and mismatches. In this paper, our analysis shows that if the evenly distributed corresponding points are selected, we can estimate a more precise fundamental matrix. This paper presents novel approaches to estimate the fundamental matrix by considering the inlier distributions. In order to select evenly distributed points, we divide the entire image into the subregions, and then examine the number of the inliers in each subregion and the area of each region. The simulation results showed that our consideration of the inlier distribution can provide a more precise estimation of the fundamental matrix.

  • Hippocampal atrophy is a well-established imaging biomarker of Alzheimer disease (AD). However, hippocampus is a non-homogenous structure with cytoarchitecturally and functionally distinct sub-regions or subfield, with each region performing distinct functions. Certain regions of the subfield have shown selective vulnerability to AD. Here, we are interested in studying the effects of normal aging and mild cognitive impairment on these sub-regional volumes. With a reliable automated segmentation technique, we segmented these subregions of the hippocampus in 101 cognitively normal (CN), 135 early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI), 67 late mild cognitive impairment (LMCI) and 48 AD subjects. Thereby, dividing the hippocampus into hippocampal tail (tail), subiculum (SUB), cornu ammonis 1 (CA1), hippocampal fissure (fissure), presubiculum (PSUB), parasubiculum (ParaSUB), molecular layer (ML), granule cells/molecular layer/dentate gyrus (GCMLDG), cornu ammonis 3(CA3), cornu ammonis 4(CA4), fimbria and hippocampal-amygdala transition area (HATA). In this cross sectional study of 351 ADNI subjects, no differences in terms of age, gender, and years of education were observed among the groups. Though, the groups had statistically significant differences (p < 0.05 after the multiple comparison correction) in the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. There was asymmetrical volume loss in the early stages of AD with the left hemisphere showing volume loss in regions that were unaffected in the right hemisphere. Bilateral parasubiculum, right cornu ammonis 1, 3 and 4, right fimbria and right HATA regions did not show any volume loss till the late MCI stages. Our findings suggest that the hippocampal subfield regions are selectively vulnerable to AD and also that these vulnerabilities are asymmetrical especially during the early stages of AD.

  • This paper describes the feature extraction of the interdigital regions of palm, and proposes a personal verification algorithm using the extracted features and the pattern types of those. The procedures of the feature extraction are as follows : first, the interdigital region is partitioned into several subregions, examining the phase of rigdes in each subregion, deciding the direction of that phase, and making the direction matrix of the region, we analyze this direction matrix to contain a feature pattern, and then, yield the first core. Second, applying the thinning to around the first core and tracing the thinned ridges, we yield the feature pattern types and second cores. Finally, the feature patterns coordinates included all of them are built. Then, distances and directions from each second core reaching to all the others are yielded from that coordinates. These informations are used to make a feature parameter. In our verification algorithm, such pattern types, the numbers of feature patterns, theses positions and feature parameters are used to analyze.

  • This study analyzed the community structure of macrobenthic organisms in the subtidal area suffering under the influence of thermal discharge from the Uljin nuclear power plant during 2012-2013 and reviewed the temporal change in the faunal composition of the macrobenthic community using data from previous studies since the start of the plant operation in 1989. A total of 319 species were collected in 2012-2013, with a mean density of $3,330ind./m^2$ and a mean biomass of $131.96g/m^2$. These results were similar to those obtained in 2006-2007. The dominant species were not different from each other before and after the power plant operations began, but the faunal density near the power plant drainage port was significantly higher compared to those densities obtained from other stations. Spiophanes bombyx and Polydora sp., which is known as a pollution indicator species, was dominant only in the drainage port area. The study area consisted of two subregions with different macrobenthic communities depending on the water depth, which was similar to the results of the 2006-2007 survey. The macrobenthic community structures before and after the operation of the power plant in the coastal area were not changed, but there were seasonal differences in the long-term macrobenthic community structure which were strongly related to the thermal discharge from the power plant.

  • In this paper, we present a method to detect an object such as ship, rock and buoy from sea IR image for the safety navigation. To this end, we do the image smoothing first and the apply watershed algorithm to segment image into subregions. Since watershed algorithm almost always produces over-segmented regions, it requires posterior merging process to get meaningful segmented regions. We propose an efficient merger algorithm that requires only two times of direct access to the pixels regardless of the number of regions. Also by analyzing IR image obtained from sea environments, we could find out that most horizontal edge come out from object regions. For the given input IR image we extract horizontal edge and eliminate isolated edges produced from background and noises by adopting morphological operator. Among the segmented regions, the regions that have horizontal edges are extracted as final results. Experimental results show the adequacy of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we consider an efficient design of quantizers at sensor nodes for sequence-based localization (SBL) systems which recently show a competitive performance for in-door positioning, Since SBL systems locate targets by partitioning the sensor field into subregions, each with an unique sequence number, we use the distance samples between sensors and the sequences for quantizer design in order to propose a low weight design process. Furthermore, we present a new cost function devised to assign the number of samples and the number of unique sequences uniformly into each of quantization partitions and design quantizers by searching the quantization partitions and codewords that minimize the cost function. We finally conduct experiments to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm offers an outstanding localization performance over typical designs while maintaining a substantial reduction of design complexity.
