Decoding processes in portable media players have a high computational cost, resulting in high power consumption by the CPU. If decoding computations are reduced, the power consumed by the CPU is also be reduced, but such a choice generally results in a degradation of the video quality for the users, so it is essential to address this tradeoff. We proposed a new CPU power management scheme that can make use of the scalability property available in the H.164/SVC standard. We first proposed a new video quality model that makes use of a video quality metric(VQM) in order to efficiently take into account the different quantization factors in the SVC. We then propose a new dynamic voltage scaling(DVS) scheme that can selectively combine the previous decoding times and frame sizes in order to accurately predict the next decoding time. We then implemented a scheme on a commercial smartphone and performed a user test in order to examine how users react to the VQM difference. Real measurements show that the proposed scheme uses up to 34% fewer energy than the Linux DVFS governor, and user tests confirm that the degradation in the quality is quite tolerable.
In practice, thresholds are determined by the two subjective assessment methods in a generalized pareto distribution of mean extreme function(MEF-graph) or Hill-graph. To remedy the problem of subjectiveness of these methods, we propose an alternative method to determine the threshold based on the robust statistics. We compared the MEF-graph, Hill-graph and our method through VaRs on the Korean stock market data from January 5, 1987 to August 3, 2009. As a result, the VaR based on the proposed method is not much different from the existing methods, and the standard deviation of VaR for our method was the smallest. The results show that our method can be a promising alternative to determine thresholds of the generalized pareto distributions.
Age determination in children have been criticized because they rely on subjective estimations of tooth development, as seen in radiographs. This study was undertaken to obtain the objective estimation of developing teeth. The panoramic radiograph of 254 males and 254 females ranging from 6 to 14 years of age were studied. The structures measured were crown height, apex width and root length. The data weree statistically investigated with SPSS/PC + package. The results were as follows : 1. With the aid of a multiple regression model, a linear relationship between some of these distances and age was shown. 2. In th total material(6-14yr) and four-yr. intervals, linear equations are as follow : Boys : 6-14 age = 683 + 145.6 44RL + 126.6.45RL + 71.1 46DRL - 161.3 46DAW 6-10 age = 1202 + 72.6 46DRL + 100.2 44RL + 75.1 45RL 8-12 age = 3818 + 75.9 45RL - 190.9 44AW 10-14 age = 4151 + 58.6 45RL - 84.0 45AW - 130.6 44AW Girls : 6-14 age = 1587 + 104.9 45RL + 113.4 44RL - 233.1 46DAW + 81.4 47DRL - 255.9 46MAW 6-10 age = 1821 + 55.8 46DRL + 67.2 45RL - 184.2 46MAW + 56.3 44RL 8-12 age = 2435 + 68.2 45RLL + 71.3 44RL 10-14 age = 3485 + 49.9 47DRL - 51.3 45AW - 179.9 47DAW + 33.4 45RL + 39.4 44RL (DRL, length of distal root in molars. This paper presents a new method for improving the quality of images corrupted by an external source that generates an attenuation and scattering of light like dust, water droplets and fog. Conventional defog methods typically encounter a distortion such that the restored image has low contrast and oversaturation of color in some regions because of the mis-estimated airlight and wrong media transmission. Therefore, in order to mitigate these problems, we propose a robust airlight selection method and local saturation evaluation method for estimating media transmission. The proposed method addresses the wrong media transmission and over-saturation problems caused by the mis-estimated airlight and thereby improves the restored image quality. The results of relevant experiments of the proposed method against conventional ones confirm the improved accuracy of atmospheric light estimation and the quality of restored images with regard to objective and subjective performance measures.
In this paper, we propose an edge directed color demosaicing algorithm considering color channel correlation. The proposed method consists of local region classification step and edge directional interpolation step. In the first step, each region of a given Bayer image is classified as normal edge, pattern edge, and flat regions by using intra channel and inter channel gradients. Especially, two criteria and verification process for the normal edge and pattern edge classification are used to reduce edge direction estimation error, respectively. In the second step, edge directional interpolation process is performed according to characteristics of the classified regions. For horizontal and vertical directional interpolations, missing color components are obtained from interpolation equations based on intra channel and inter channel correlations in order to improve the performance of the directional interpolations. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms conventional approaches in both objective and subjective terms.
The conventional acoustic sounds can be synthesized by Frequency Modulation which includes the variation of frequency, amplitude, and modulation index. In this paper the number of variable synthesis parameters are limited to easily implement the existing two carrier FM algorithm by hardware. The DSP(Digital Signal Processor), which is able to carry out the modified algorithm and synthesize 16 sounds at a time, is designed with $0.8{\mu}m$ standard sells. The DSP which can synthesize 2 sounds at a time is implemented by ASIC emulator to examine the sound quality of the designed DSP. Through the objective and subjective estimation, it is confirmed that the sounds of many instruments from the implemented DSP are very closed to their real sound. Finally the designed DSP is layouted and simulated by VLSI desgn tool. According to the simulation, the designed DSP has the sufficiently fast speed for synthesizing 16 sounds at a time.
The binaural auditory system of human has the capability of differentiating the direction and distance of sound sources. This feature is well characterised in terms of the inter-aural intensity difference (IID), the inter-aural time difference (ITD) and/or the spectral shape difference (SSD) arising from the acoustic transfer of a sound source to the outer ears. This paper proposes an effective way of extracting the three sound perception factors (IID, ITD, SSD) from the head-related transfer functions (HRTF's) that depends on the direction and distance of the acoustic source from the listener. It includes the estimation method of the equivalent ITD and 1/3-octave band-based IID factors and their usage to locate a sound source in space. Subjective and objective tests were carried out to examine the effectiveness of the proposed methodology and its applicability to real sound systems. Those experimental results are illustrated in this paper.

In this paper, we propose a robust speech reinforcement technique to enhance the intelligibility of the degraded speech signal under the ambient noise environments based on soft decision scheme incorporating a speech absence probability (SAP) with speech reinforcement gains. Since the ambient noise significantly decreases the intelligibility of the speech signal, the speech reinforcement approach to amplify the estimated clean speech signal from the background noise environments for improving the intelligibility and clarity of the corrupted speech signal was proposed. In order to estimate the robust reinforcement gain rather than the conventional speech reinforcement method between speech active periods and nonspeech periods or transient intervals, we propose the speech reinforcement algorithm based on soft decision applying the SAP to the estimation of speech reinforcement gains. The performances of the proposed algorithm are evaluated by the Comparison Category Rating (CCR) of the measurement for subjective determination of transmission quality in ITU-T P.800 under various ambient noise environments and show better performances compared with the conventional method.

Multiple projectors with partially overlapping regions can be used to project a seamless image on a large projection surface. With the advent of high-resolution photography, such systems are gaining popularity. Experts set up such projection systems by subjectively identifying the types of errors induced by the system in the projected images and rectifying them by optimizing (correcting) the parameters associated with the system. This requires substantial time and effort, thus making it difficult to set up such systems. Moreover, comparing the performance of different multi-projector display (MPD) systems becomes difficult because of the subjective nature of evaluation. In this work, we present a framework to quantitatively determine the quality of an MPD system and any image projected using such a system. We have divided the quality assessment into geometric and photometric qualities. For geometric quality assessment, we use Feature Similarity Index (FSIM) and distance-based Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT). For photometric quality assessment, we propose to use a measure incorporating Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM), Intensity Magnitude Ratio (IMR) and Perceptual Color Difference (ΔE). We have tested the proposed framework and demonstrated that it provides an acceptable method for both quantitative evaluation of MPD systems and estimation of the perceptual quality of any image projected by them.
In this study, we developed evaluation indicators of dam rehabilitation considering climate change in order to prepare for safety of aging dam facilities in accordance with changes in rainfall intensity. The validity and appropriateness of each indicator, and the evaluation criteria were selected for quantitative indicators for each detail through domestic and international case studies, literature review, and expert advice. The survey was carried out to estimate the importance of each indicator for dam rehabilitation. The subjective assessment of the respondents was rearranged using pairwise comparison from the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The reliability of the survey results was evaluated through consistent verification. In addition, a comparative assessment was carried out which evaluated the reliability importance estimation result to refine the criteria to distinguish rating scales between expert and non-expert groups on dam-related fields.
