  • The access to literary works, including fictions, has focused on descriptive elements, and the subject access has been confined to denotative elements such as the subject matter, name of character and geographical name, etc, which appear in the work. This practice will not lead to the essence of subject of fiction, and does not reflect the demand of users for the subject who pursue aesthetic experience. In this study, concepts of symbol and motif and their possibility to be used as subject access point are considered to enhance a subject access scheme. In addition, this study tries to build the scheme of symbol and motif by using the glossary as the source of information. The composed schemes are applied to 20th century Korean fictions and its usability and limits are discussed.

  • To understand and analyze the variety of the subject access methods of OPACs, telephone interviews were administered to the computerized libraries in Seoul. Data was collected during 4 days in Feb. 1997, and 155 libraries were responded. It was found that 105 libraries are operating OPACs. Among the 105 libraries, almost of all provide classification number and title keyword access, however, only half of them provide subject name access. 18 libraries allow linking/browsing facility between classification number and subject name/keyword. The language of the subject name to oriental books is mainly Korean and that to the Western books is mainly English. LCSH is the major authority list used. 36 libraries, 2/3 of them are special libraries, subject name is assigned by librarian without control. Based on the results, problems and suggestions to enhance subject access capability are presented.

  • The purposes of this study are to examine the various methods of subject access in the rapidly changing environment and to suggest the future of subject access in National Library of Korea (NLK). First of all, current status and problems of Library of Congress Subject Headings List as an representative subject headings in the world and the ways of improving effectiveness of subject retrieval were dealt with. As the ways of improving subject access, social bookmarking, folksonomy, tagging, facet applications, automatic assignment of keyword, thesauri, classification system, and auto-assigned search box were suggested. Finally, current status of NLK subject headings and the ways of improving for utilization of the subject headings as subject access were provided.

  • This study aims to suggest several improvement strategies for the access and retrieval system of National Library of Korea Subject Headings (NLKSH). For this purpose, first of all, the access and retrieval systems in five selected subject headings were examined. Second, focus group interviews and system analysis were conducted to reveal the current condition and suggest the future development strategies. Third, IFLA's Guidelines for Subject Access in National Bibliographies and FAST application cases were analyzed to suggest implications on the improvement strategies. Upon these analysis, recommendations for improving access and retrieval systems of the NLKSH were proposed in four areas as follows: functionalities, interfaces, queries, and other front-end features.

  • Access Control is one of essential branches to provide system's security. Depending on what standards we apply, in general, there are Role-based access control, History-based access control. The first is based on subject's role, The later is based on subject's history. In fact, RBAC has been implemented, we are using it by purchasing some orders through the internet. But, HBAC is so complex that there will occur some errors on the system. This is more and more when HBAC is used with other access controls. So HBAC's formalization and model which are general enough to encompass a range of policies in using more than one access control model within a given system are important. To simplify these, we design the mathematical model called non-access structure. This Non-access structure contains to historical access list. If it is given subjects and objects, we look into subject grouping and object relation, and then we design Non-access structure. Then we can determine the permission based on history without conflict.

  • This study aims at defining the concept of OPAC, tracing of research trends and development of it, and clarifying various methods of subject access and patterns of bibliographic searching in OPAC as well as strategies for improving to implement online catalogs. Although OPAC is so far the most user-friendly bibliographic searching method, there are still a lot of issues including online subject access in particular. Therefore a more effective and useful method for computer end-users have to be developed, for instance, improvement of an indexing system, a n.0, pplication of the classification system as a searching tool, a new design and construction of standardized thesaurus, betterment of user interface, introducing of expert system into bibliographic searching, establishment of subject authority file. Those would raise the success-rate of users seeking bibliographic information in the library catalogs. Korean libraries are in very early stage of OPAC implementation so that every efforts and concerns to improve strategies and techniques for subject access to OPAC have been strongly asked.

  • This study suggested the necessity of subject access for understanding on the contents of children's books which library would select children's books efficiently. Especially it was presented examples of efficiency on subject access analyzing Korean translation fiction of Newbery Medal Winner's books. Besides subject on the contents of books, it suggested fiction genre and gender and age of protagonist as elements which should be taken into account in process of Subject Headings development.

  • The purpose of this study is to experiment online public access catalog enhancements to improve its subject access capability. Three catalog databases, enhanced with title keywords, controlled vocabulary, and content words with controlled vocabulary respectively, were implemented. 18 searchers performed 2 subject searshes against 3 different catalog databases. And the transaction logs are analyzed. The results of the study can be summarized as follows : Controlled vocabulary catalog database achieved 41.8% recall ratio in average ; the addition of table of contents words to the controlled vocabulary is an effective technique with increasing recall ration upto 55% without decreasing precision ; and the database enhanced with title keywords shows 31.7% recall ratio in average. Of the three kinds of catalog databases, only the catalog with contents words produced 2 unique relevant documents. The results indicate that both user training and system development is required to have better search performance in online public access catalog.

  • IT security companies have been releasing file system filter driver security solutions based on the whitelist, which are being used by several enterprises in the relevant industries. However, in February 2019, a whitelist vulnerability was discovered in Microsoft Edge browser, which allows malicious code to be executed unknown to users. If a hacker had inserted a program that executed malicious code into the whitelist, it would have resulted in considerable damage. File system filter driver security solutions based on the whitelist are discretionary access control (DAC) models. Hence, the whitelist is vulnerable because it only considers the target subject to be accessed, without taking into account the access rights of the file target object. In this study, we propose an industrial device security system for Windows to address this vulnerability, which improves the security of the security policy by determining not only the access rights of the subject but also those of the object through the application of the mandatory access control (MAC) policy in the Windows industrial operating system. The access control method does not base the security policy on the whitelist; instead, by investigating the setting of the security policy not only for the subject but also the object, we propose a method that provides improved stability, compared to the conventional whitelist method.

  • This study develops a methodology for facet-based subject headings for the subject access to oral history records collected by such a project of the knit business in Haebangchon. First, the concept and characteristics of oral history records and their contents were investigated, and the meaning of facets and subject headings applied to such content was examined in the literature review. Second, the basic facets of oral history records were created based on 5W1H that reflected the narrative feature of oral history. Third, 540 subject-related terms were selected through an analysis of the transcript written based on oral history interviews with one interviewer and seven interviewees linked to the knit business in Haebangchon. Fourth and last, subject headings were proposed with the selected subject-related terms categorized in facets with various relationships. These facet-based subject headings will improve the subject access and use of oral history records.
